Saudi Aramco made progress in 1996 on a  project to bring 500,000 bpd of Arabian Extra Light crude oil into production from the remote Shaybah field in the Rub' al Khali desert.  The field, located nearly 400 kilometers (250 miles) from the nearest paved highway, will be linked by a 640-kilometer (400-mil) pipeline to oil-processing facilities tin Abqaiq.   It is scheduled to come on stream in 1998.

At the Ras Tanura Refinery, the company moved ahead on a project to upgrade the 300,000-bpd facility to increase productivity and to provide more flexibility to meet product demand by customers in the Kingdom.  The project is scheduled to be in 1998.
