Elisha Phipps Newlin was born in East Fallowfield Twp on Buck's Run, Chester County, Pennsylvania,  the son of James and Sarah Phipps Newlin.  Elisha married Ruth Ann Frame, and these two appear for the last time in Chester County records, on the 1850 census, when they are listed with their children Henry, Elizabeth, Sarah L., Elisha, Robert L., Gabriella and Margaretta.  The family then moved to Colerain Twp, Belmont County, Ohio, and Elisha was dead before the 1860 census when Ruth Ann appeared as the Head of Household.  Living with her at this time were Elizabeth, Sarah L., Robert ., Margaretta P, Mary E., and William H.  who was born after the move to Ohio.   On both the 1850 and 1860 census Sarah  is said to have been born in Ohio......how this is possible I have not been able to determine, or indeed, to tell if she is actually the child of Elisha and Ruth Ann, as no birth records have been found... .this remains one of my most puzzling and unanswered questions.

I found a gravestone in Ohio for  Mary Etta , (surely the Mary E. on the 1850 Chester County census).  The stone lists the following;" Daughter of Elisha P.and  Ruth Newlin Oct. 4, 1853  Sept. 25, 1865."     Their son Elisha stayed in Pennsylvania  and did not emigrate with the rest of the family, but the fate of Gabriella  is unknown.  She is not in the family plot in Ohio, and may have died before the move.  It appears that Ruth Ann may have lost a husband and 2 children, in less than a 10 year period.

The background on this page is of the Fallowfield Meeting House.  Elisha  and his siblings undoubtedly attended meetings here, and his father and mother, James and Sarah Phipps, are buried in the cemetery adjacent to the meeting house.
