The Smith family originally came to Ohio from York County, PA, and James's parents, Joseph and Roseanne Baxter Smith, were members of the the Seceder's sect of Presbyterianism.  After marrying in York  County, PA, they emigrated to Warren Twp, Jefferson County, Ohio, and were buried in the Seceder's Cemetery, Mt. Pleasant, Jefferson County, Ohio.  Their children were James, the eldest, Joseph Lafayette, who became an attorney and judge in Ravenswood, WV, Susanna, Eleanor Beatty, Jane, Andrew Duncan, George B. and Ferdinand Spangler, all mentioned in the wills of Joseph and Rosanne.

Alice Smith Bullard was killed in 1903, when she was struck by a trolley while walking home from Christmas shopping.  Her hearing was poor, and it is thought  that she simply didn't hear it's approach.....she died almost instantly, after her leg was partially severed and her hat pin was driven into her head.

Reuben, Alice's  husband, married  a second wife, Minnie Koehnline, but had no children other than those he had with his first wife Alice; Mabel, Maude, Hazel and Ernest.  Reuben  and Alice are buried in Old Stone Church Cemetery, Wheeling, Ohio County, WV.
