| "It's
Finally All Coming Together for Wogtech" After five years of Junior A
hockey, and questions of the future, Corey finally made the decision to
attend college in the summer of 2003. After contemplating a pro
career, Corey decided that the College of St. Scholastica would be the best
fit for him. When asked why, Corey stated, "Pro hockey was intriguing,
but after spending a few weeks with the pro guys I was certain that I would
need my education in the long run. I still intend on playing pro, but
I knew that if I went right away that I would always have my education on
the back of my mind."
Wogtech's decision to put pro hockey in the back of his mind, as opposed
to his education, brought nothing but smiles to the fans at CSS. After
his freshman season at St. Scholastica, it looks like he has made the right
decision. Splitting time with upper classman, Josh Liebig, the two highly
touted goaltenders seem to be the answer to all of Scholastica's problems.
"A lot of people ask me why I chose CSS over a top end division 1 school,
and the answer is comfort. A friend of mine attended his first choice
for hockey reasons only. He ended up leaving after his first year
because he hated it. He told me, you have to chose a school that makes
you feel comfortable because hockey is not the only thing you'll have to
deal with while you're there."
Thanks to coach Cory Borys, Wogtech felt comfy right away.
"Honestly, I've never felt better in my entire life. Coach Borys
treats us like division 1 athletes. He expects alot out of us, and he
gives us alot in return." That expectation is something that will
undoubtedly propel Wogtech's career into the future. With intentions
of only playing three seasons, he's in a rush to develop his skills for the
next level. "I was honest with coach from day one. My dream is
to play pro hockey at the highest level possible, so I told him I planned on
graduating early in order to get things under way."
A lot of coaches would be disappointed with that type of agenda, but
Borys seems to agree. "I was a little scared to tell coach, but after
we talked about it, he told me that he had already been in contact with a
number of pro teams about me. Coach thinks that the faster I leave,
the higher I go, the better it is for the reputation of our hockey program".
Assuming Wogtech stays healthy, coach Borys' opinion will undoubtedly prove
itself true. Wogtech is quite possibly the best goaltender St.
Scholastica has ever seen, and that's only after his freshman season.
If things go his way, he'll put his stamp on CSS athletics a year earlier
than even the best have been able to. |
