Good to visit this web site and see the old pictures and hear about Bandytown and Twilight. I ran into Mrs. Hash and Hazel yesterday at Whitesville Rite-Aid. Mrs. Hash was 96 yrs young this past weekend and was still getting around pretty good with a walker. Let's all hope we can make it to that age and 'get around'.

Great Site! Brings back a lot of memories of one of the many places we lived in Boone County. I'd love to write a story about me as a young boy, living at Robinhood but visiting my aging (He was younger than I am now) Grand Paw, Charley Halstead, when he lived there. He had those icy light Blue Eyes that just burned a hole thru ya when he looked your way. Scared the bee jeebers outta me. He was one of those old hardcore union organizers who was still fathering kids at past 70. I'll never forget that look or the one my Grandmother gave me the day I thought her homemade marmalade was the same as kool-aid and she caught me adding water and stirring to mix up a batch to drink. Or my Daddy sayin' he had to quit making Moonshine 'cause my sister would tell anybody who visited us just how he made it. He said, "She'd tell a hangin' crime on a man." Of course, he was the same one who gave my Mother his paycheck on a Friday and went drinking while we visited. He came to my grandmother's about 1:00 A.M. and wanted the rest of the money and my Mother said "No, we got bills to pay and we ain't done no shoppin'." He hit her and my Grandmother came out on the porch w/a 9 shot automatic and emptied it as he ran away. You tell me we didn't know how to have fun. I asked my Grandmother much later in life if she was trying to scare him. She said, 'No, I was trying to kill him but he kept zigging and then zagging. Everytime I saw corn tassles move, I shot." Of course, back then we didn't have TV or even telephones, much less Internet. I asked my Dad many years later if he was scared. He said "I never quit running for about two miles." When he finally came back around her house he was a mite more respectful. Coal miners might be tough but Grannys carry the hardware that demands respect. lol

I grew up in Twilight/Robinhood.  I moved away in 1980 but I sometimes miss the simple life and the slow pace of actually "stopping to smell the roses."  My Dad was Dewey Workman who passed away almost 6 years ago and we all miss him so much. It's nice to see this site as it brings back a lot of good memories.

To the family friends and others in Bandytown Twilight and any other Boone County community that may have offended I do apologize. I however did support the fact that I was not the one that brought this hearing to the area. This was noted in the meeting I am not sure why it was not printed. Please understand that the attendance at the meeting was intended to support you not over ride the communities very legitimate concerns. I have been to many hearings much like this and it is the regulatory agencies jobs to shut us out of the permitting process. Our lives, homes and health mean nothing to these agencies. When I visited your web site I found this article in the news section and it honestly surprised me. We have done more to protect your community than you obviously realize. Please feel free to Google search my name and you will see what we have done not only for our communities but others as well. Please feel to email and possibly we can work together to become a better Boone County where people can be respected for who they are and where they are from. www.ohvec.org www.sludgesafety.org www.coalimpoundment.org www.southwings.org www.appvoices.org www.appalshop.org www.kilowattours.org www.blackdiamondsmovie.com www.heartwood.org www.mountainjusticesummer.org www.kftc.org www.socm.org www.mountainjustice.org www.keepersofmountains.org www.christiansforthemountains.org www.cleanelections.org www.wvhc.org www.wvec.org this is just a few of the local organizations I work with. I have also work with many people in other parts of the world. Still no one is as important to me as our local residents. Please understand that this prep plant will affect many communities mainly yours. The coal going into this plant will be coming from the mine sites through out the mountains of Boone County and this will impact all of our air. I have meetings on the third Thursday of each month for any one interested in attending. I will send a letter to the editor of the CVN to show support to the community and everyone's efforts in Bandytown will be highlighted. Thank you Maria Gunnoe Mountain Community Organizer www.ohvec.org or 304-245-8481.

Hi, this is Ron Shumate. I lived in Bandytown from 1971 to 1985. I moved to Bandytown when I was eight, my grandfather ran a store there, Harper’s Grocery. I have very fond memories of growing up in town. All of the pick up games of touch football, Punchy (the big Brown’s fan) would quarterback for both sides, damming up the creek to make a swimming hole or just going down to the Westville bridge for a swim. We would ride our bikes all over town, especially up to Peanut’s bridge for some reason. Tim and Ty were always building a cabin somewhere. Playing basketball at Timmy Bailey’s. Playing chess with Bruce Harper and John Culp. Thirsel was our Sunday School Superintendent, I always had the deepest respect for him. I remember Johnny and Richard’s mom Katherine Workman always leading the singing at church, she was very faithful to the church. My dad, Leon, passed away in 1987, he is buried at Mid-Ferrell cemetery. Bruce and my mom moved to North Carolina a year later. Grandma Mae still lives in Bandytown. My wife and I live in Bluefield WV with our two sons, Andrew (19) and Ben (15). I am a District Manager for the Magic Mart chain of stores. I would enjoy hearing from any of my old friends, so feel free to e-mail me at shumatefamily@comcast.net

I grew up in Twilight, but went to school and grew up with lots of kids from Bandytown, and Robin Hood. Michael is my real name but everyone from there knows me by my nickname of "Pete." I've seen many familiar names, faces and places on this site. Many members of my family are buried at Mid-Ferrell and the Greene cemeteries, as well as many schoolmates and friends. The places may have changed but we can cherish our memories.

I have so enjoyed your web-site! I was born and raised at Price Hill and my father Ralph Jarrell, preached at the Church of Christ in Bandytown from time to time. I remember the coal stove keeping us warm during the services, and the great food, with these wonderful people after church. Even though I was a child, I knew I was with family and friends, that always made us feel so loved. It has been a long time since I've been there, but I know, should I go again, I would still feel the same warmth of the people. Merry Christmas! Debra Jarrell Taylor
