History of Marfans
Marfans was first put on record by a French Pediatrician named Antoine Marfan who had a patient that had elongated fingers and toes as well as elongated limbs. It was dated 1896,since Dr.Marfan was the first to record and therefore discover the characteristics,it took on his name. And has since been called Marfan Syndrome
There are over 200 different heritable disorders of connective tissue, including a few which closely resemble Marfan syndrome.
MARFAN SYNDROME TIME LINE
1896 - Dr.Antoine Marfan identifies a group of skeletal characteristics in a single patient tha became known as Marfan syndrome
1914 - Association of dislocated lenses with Marfan syndrome
1931 - It was first suggested that a defect in Mesenchme(in essence, connective tissue)was the basic defect in Marfan syndrome
1943 - The main life-threatening cardiovascular complications (aneurysm of the aorta and aortic dissection)were reported in single cases.
1950 - Studies of a relatively large number of patients and their families delineated the natural history of the syndrome(especially the cardiovascular complications),defined the range of pleiotropism and variablity, and established its autosomal dominant inheritance.
1955 - Victor McKusick,M.D.,published a paper that summarized the spectrum of cardiovascular abnormalities and also first identified the group of conditiolns called heritible disorders of the connective tissue of which Marfan syndrome was a charter member.
1956 - The first edition of Dr.McKusick's monograph,Heritable Disordrs of the Connective Tissue, was published (although the idea was first published the year before).
1968 - Bentall composition graft procedure first described.
1970 - Echocardiography is introduced for noninvasive determination of the size of the aortic root.
1971 - Dr.McKusick and colleagues suggested the possibility that beta blockade might be effective in slowing the porgression of aorta enlargement:however ,their effectiveness was not documented until 1994.
1972 - The first and only study of natural history showed that the life expectancy of in Marfan syndrome was,on average, limited to the fourth and fifth decade(40's-50's).
1981 - Benchmark study-The Eye in the Marfan syndrome.
1986 - Discovery of fibrillin, the major protein of the microfibril.
1986 - The first sturdy if the effectivenes of the prophylactic composite graft repair was published by Vincent Gott,M.D.
1988 - Diagnostic criteria for Marfan syndrome refined in the Berklin Nosology for Heritable Disorders of Connective Tissue.
1988 - First International Symposium on the Marfan Syndrome was held in Baltimore.
1990 - Chromosome 15 was identified as the general location of the gene causing Marfan syndrome.
1991 - The fibrillin gene was both mapped to Chromosome 15 and identified s the cause of Marfan syndrome.
1992 - The Second International Symposium on the Marfan Syndrome was held in San Francisco.
1994 - Beta Blockers proven effective in slowing progression of aorta enlargement.
1994 - Third International Symposium on the Marfan Syndrome was held in Berlin,Germany.
1995 - Life expectancyfor people with Marfan syndrome is 72 years for people treated preventively and aggressively.
1996 - Expected publication of the revised nosology(diagnostic criteria)for Marfan syndrome.
1996 - The Fourth International Symposium on the Marfan syndrome and the First International Consumer Workshop on the Marfan syndrome is scheduled for Davos,Switzerland,
