76th Infantry Division

My grandfather Bernard W. Whittington fought in World War II with the 1st Battalion, 417th Infantry Regiment, 76th Infantry Division, in Patton's Third Army. He manned a 57mm anti-tank gun with a muzzle velocity of 2700 ft per second, capable of penetrating 2.7 inches of armour at a range of 1000 yards, a maximum range of 10,260 yds (about 5.5 miles), and it weighed 2700 lbs. His gun was towed but some were mounted on M3 half-tracks and known as the T48 Gun Motor Carriage.

I don't have much information on the 76th Infantry Division itself but mostly about the 1st Battalion and 417th Regiment because my grandfather let me borrow the Battalion book that was given to each man once the war was over.

I'll probably always be working on this section of my site so be patient if you want to learn about the 76th Division. If you are a historian with info on the Division please e-mail me and give me as much of info as possible or if you are a veteran of the 76th Infantry Division and would like to share your stories, please e-mail me with them also. Thanks. Any stories sent to me via e-mail will be put on my site upon request. I'd love to here your stories! Also if you have found any other websites that have to do with the 76th Infantry Division please e-mail me and give me the address to the site.

Thank You.
