Absinthe (Artemisia absinthium L.)Perennial grass of 1 m. high, covered with fine silver down. Alternating leaves of 5-7 cm. long. Yellowish, small flowers. Native of the Old World, it is broadly cultivated in both hemispheres.Because of its tonic activity and emenagoga, is indicated in the amenorrhoea treatment, inappetence, biliar disquinesis and infections. It should not be administered more of 1 month.
This is a depurative plant. It´s good to desinflammate the kidney. It´s helpful to dissolve renal calculations. It is used in diarrheas, hepatitis, cirrhosis, biliar calculations, gastritis.
Asmachilca (Eupatorium triplinerve)
Bush of approximately 1 meter of height.It is cultivated among the Andes.It has been used from remote times to cure breathing affections.
Balm-gentle (Satureja brownei L.)
Aromatic, perennial grass of 20 cm. of height. Leaves have a short petiole with lilacs or lavender flowers. It´s native of Europe, cultivated in shady lands and riversides of rivers. It´s cultivated in Center, South America and the Caribbean. For its aromatic, antibacterial and febrifuge properties is indicated in the treatment of respiratory affections and hypertension.
Borraja (Borago officinalis L.)
Perennial grass of 60 cm. of height, covered with fine hard down.Leaves rough, covered with fine down in both surfaces. It is native of Europe and north of Africa.It grows in temperate regions.It is indicated in the treatment of respiratory affections (colds, bronchitis, faringitis), situations that require increase of the diuresis and premenstrual syndrome.
This plant is recommended for the stomachaches, the appetite lack and bad digestion.
Cat´s claw (Wilcacora) (Uncaria tomentosa Willd)
Gigantic Liana of 18 to 19 meters of height. This plant presents two periods or stages : in the first year it looks like an herbaceous climber plant, It leans on others plants with its hooks. The hooks, generally in groups of three, begin in the base of the leaves or yolks. These hooks begin to arise when the root has been able to store enough feed and water to survive in a dried hot ground. In the second to the third year of life the plant becomes woody and has a twisted trunk. It grows in tropical and rainy climates, in amazon forests areas with abundant solar light. The indians of the amazon tribes use the boiling of the bark and the root to cure inflammations, cancer and also as a contraceptive drug when administering it to high doses. The prolonged use of this plant can produce gastrointestinal side effects and chronic constipation.
Chicory (Cichorium intybus L.)
Perennial grass of fleshy root with latex. Robust erected stem,1 m. high.Leaves of 15 cm. of long, jagged. Is native of Europe. It is cultivated in temperate areas.It has a diuretic and tonic action, it is suitable to treat anorexy, dyspepsia, biliar disquinesis, hypertension and oliguria.
Root characteristic of the selva.When used it produces an intense cold, sensation that cause panic,but that solely lasts some minutes. It is a very strong and radical remedy for the rheumatism and the arthritis.
Culantrillo of Well (Adiantum capillus-veneris L.)
Perennial fern of brown color. Fibrous, fine roots. It is native of the south of Europe, western Asia, tropical and subtropical America. It grows in humid and shady places, in banks of rivers, cascades. For its astringent, emollient and expectorating properties is suitable to use in the treatment of bronchitis, cold, faringitis and other respiratory affections.It is used also in cases of jaundice.
This plant has silver or whitish little flowers.It is very effective to diminish the level of glucose in the blood, for what is used in the diabetes.
Dragon´s blood (Croton palanostigma Klotzsch)
Tree of 15 meters of height, almost always ramified in the superior part. It has a grizzly reddish color. When making incisions in the bark it liberates a resin of dark red color ("blood"). It growns in humid tropical forested lands among 125 to 2080 meters above sea level. It has an antiulcerous, antihemorragic, antineoplastic, depurative, antibacterial (throat affections), antiseptic properties.
Eucalyptus (Eucaliptus globulus)
Tree of 75-90 m. of height, grizzly bark, peels in certain time of the year. Leaves with white serous layer. It is native of Australia and Tasmania, it´s known more than 500 species. In America it´s cultivated in tropical, subtropical and temperate climates from California to Argentina. It is suitable to treat respiratory affections and diabetes. Topically it is suitable to treat wounds.It is applied in form of frictions to combat the rheumatism and as inhalations and gargles with oil or ointment to treat respiratory affections.
Flower of Sand (Tiquilia paronychioides)
It has depurative action on the nervous system cause its light sedative action, regulating the altered neurovegetative system in some vagotonic patients, with excessive anxiety.Also eliminates the excess of uric acid in the blood, often taken place by the excessive consumption of animal proteins.
Geranium (Geranium robertianun)
This plant grows in gardens like ornamental plant. The leaves are used for stomachaches caused by indigestion.
Grass of Juan Alonso (Xanthium spinosum)
Itis a thorny plant.It´s used to cure inflammation. Cure the urinary retention.
Grass Santa (Cestrum hediondinum Durn.)
Erect bush of 1 to 3 m. of height, of stinking scent. It´s found in channels riversides of the coast and the mountain among 200 to 3400 meters above sea level. It´s used as an analgesic in throat pains, articulary pains and bronchial affections, it has digestive, sedative,queratolitic action.
Hercampuri (Gentianela alboroseas)
Small bush of dark brown color of small leaves and colored flowers. It is found in Andean regions among 3500 to 4300 meters above sea level, in cold areas.This herb is used from the times of the Incan Empire to alleviate stomachaches, to regenerate the renal and hepatic functions, to combat malaria, as a depurative of the blood, stimulant of the biliar function and as a remedy for obesity.
Huamanrripa (Laccopetalum giganteum Weed.)
Erect grass of 50 cm. of height. It´s an Andean plant, it is found in hillsides of the puna among 4200 to 4600 meters above sea level. It has antitusigen and expectorant properties.
Hiura-huira (Calcitium canescens)
This plant grows in cold places.The leaves have a flat side and another cottony;.The flat side of the leaf heals the wound once clean. This plant has antiseptic, expectorant, antitusigen and antipiretic action. Its chemistry composition is in study.
Leaves of Coca (Erytroxilon cocae L.)
Bush of 90 cm. to 2 m. of height. In Peru it is distributed in tropical and subtropical areas between the 500 and 2000 meters above sea level. It is found from Colombia to Argentina. It has digestive properties, local anesthetic action, antinflammatory action. The prolonged use of this herb can cause adiction.
Leaves of Sen (Cassia angustifolia)
Bush of yellowish leaves. It is native of Arabia and Yemen. For its laxative property the leaves and fruits are indicated to treat constipation and situations that requires a intestinal casting (radiological studies, operations).
Line of Horse (Equisetum arvense)
It has astringent, antiseptic and diuretic activity. It has a good action in enuresis, prostatic illness, cystitis, urinary incontinence, hematuria and uretritis. For its antiseptic and healing properties it is used in lesions of the skin like wounds and ulcers.
Lion´s Tooth (Taraxacum officinale Weber)
Perennial grass of big root with milky, bitter latex and short, jagged leaves. It is native of Europe.It´s disseminated all over the world in dry lands. As coleretic and digestive, it is suitable to use in the treatment of hepatic congestion, hepatobiliar disquinesis, biliar lithiasis, jaundice, arterosclerosis, inappetence, slow digestion and constipation; as renal activator in oliguria, urolithiasis, obesity, rheumatism, dropsy and gote; as depurative in dermal illnesses (acne, eczema).
Maca (Lepidium meyenii Walp.)It´s an herbaceous perennial plant, , of approximately 15 cm. of height. It grows in high Andean areas among 3300 to 4500 meters above sea level. It´s cultivated mainly in the hillsides of the puna, it´s very resistant to the cold and the freeze. It´s harvested in the months of May to June and once harvested it has to be dried. It´s recommended as a tonic for the youths, children, old men, anemic people and convalescents; its great regulator quality has been demonstrated, so much organic as hormonal, it´s effective to treat the woman's infertility, also it has a high content of iodine.
Biennial grass, erect or recumbent, ramified from the base. It´s native of Europe. It grows in temperate and subtropical climates of both hemispheres. It is used as a cardiotonic.The use of the flowers is indicated for the treatment of heart affections and epilepsy.
It´s considered a depurative plant. Its main action is to increase the diuresis in the urinary system, also has a slightly cathartic action on the gastrointestinal system. The steroids and organic acids found in this plant confer its antiinflammatory action. It also has an antiallergic action.
The juice of this fruit is recommended to lower the blood pressure, that´s why it is used in arterial hypertension.
This fruit is originary of the mountain, it reinforces the pancreas. It´s used to treat the
diabetes.Marcco (Ambrosia peruviana Willd.)
Annual grass that forms small bushes, very fragrant. It is plentiful under the form of heaths disseminated in the humid and muddy riversides of rivers of the coastal valleys and forest brows; but this plant can also support certain dryness of the ground. It has antirreumatic, antiinflammatory properties, it´s used in nervous alterations (neuralgias, hysteria). It´s neurotonic and vermifuge.
The medic is a rich vitamin C source, calcium and phosphore.It stimulates the appetite, helps to nurture the skin, the hair and the fingernails. It is beneficent during the recovery of illnesses. The medic tea stimulates the production of maternal milk in mothers. In studies it has been demonstrated that the medic has the property to lower blood level of cholesterol.Its use should be avoided in people prone to hemorrhages.
Perennial bush or sapling of up to 10 m. of height. Originating of the Peru, it is plentiful also in Chile, Ecuador and Bolivia. Cultivated as ornamental tree in Mexico and the United States. It is found until the 3300 meters above sea level in Peru. It inhabits warm and sheltered gulches and western slopes of the Andes.It´s used in respiratory affections , hepatitis. It´s has antirreumatic, healing, purifier, hemostatic, antiespasmodic properties.
Mullaca (Müehlenbeckia vulcanica)
The leaves and stems are used caused its active substances that cause great heating reaction in the organism.It has a descongestive, antiallergic and broncodilatory action. It´s used in respiratory affections.
Muña-muña (Minthostachys setosa Brig.)
It´s an herbaceous plant of one to two meters of height. It is distributed in the south of Peru among 2700 to 3400 meters above sea level. It is used as carminative, antiseptic, analgesic remedy, in renal and respiratory affections.
It is a perennial aromatic plant, of 20 - 30 cm. of height.. It grows in calcareous and siliceous ground in temperate climates. For its antiseptic, digestive and expectorant action is suitable for treatment of inappetence, slow digestion, meteorism, cough, faringitis, sinusitis, bronchitis and amenorrhoea.
Paico (Chenopodium ambrasioides L.)
Aromatic grass of 30 to 50 cm. of height. It inhabits warm and temperate areas, in rocky hillsides. Distributed in coast, mountain and forest. It is used as an antihelmintic, digestive,carminative, antiinflammatory, antirreumatic remedy, and in dermatological affections.
Pinco-pinco (Efedra americana H and B)
It´s a very ramified, erect bush. It´s found in mountains and in some hills located close to the sea. It´s a purifier of the blood. It has antidisenteric, hemostatic, antinflammatory, diuretic properties. It´s used in buccal, renal affections, and in treatment of fractures.
It´s a plants from 40 to 60 cm. of height. It´s cultivated in high lands among 3000 to 4000 meters above sea level. Its cultivation has been distributed thoroughly by the whole world. It is a hemostatic, antinflammatory, antirreumatic remedy. It´s used in stings of insects, in burns, in renal calculations.
Queto-queto (Gnaphalium spicatum Lam.)
Biennial or perennial grass, of thin roots, measures approximately 20 cm. of height. It grows in the riversides of the Andean streams and in high parts of the hills to an altitude among 2400 to 4500 meters above sea level. It extends to Chile, Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay, south of the Brazil. It has antiseptic, acaricide, anticancer (gastric cancer and of the prostate) properties. It is used in respiratory affections (hoarseness, throat pain) and cure of light wounds.
Perennial grass until of 1 m. of high, strongly fragrant. It´s native of Asia and Mediterranean. It´s cultivated in most of the American continent. For its antitusigen, espasmolitic and sedative activity is indicated in the treatment of amenorrhoea, hysteria, cardiovascular and circulatory affections (hemorrhoids, varixes). For the antiinflammatory and healing activity its topical use is indicated in the treatment of ulcers of gums, eczema, psoriasis, pediculosis, rheumatism and sting of poisonous animals.
This plant is native of the mediterranean region. For its tonic, digestive, colagogo and laxative properties is indicated in the treatment of dyspepsia and constipation. It has the advantage of not losing its effectiveness with the continuous use, it´s particularly useful to correct the constipation of the medication with iron. As emollient is indicated in the topical treatment of wounds, burns and ulcers. It is recommended to apply in the form of cream and ointments.
Stone crusher (Phylantus niruri)
This plant, as its name indicates, helps to dissolve calculations in the organism. It is used in renal and biliar lithiasis.
The bark of this tree of the forest is recommended for cases of malignant tumors.
Tamarind (Tamarindus indica L.)
Tree of 10-25 m. of height with brown bark. It is native of dry savannas of Africa. Introduced in America by the slaves from Africa, thoroughly cultivated in the Caribbean and rest of tropical America. A very popular soda is made with the pulp of the fruits. For its diuretic and antibiotic properties the pulp of the fruit is indicated in the treatment of gastrointestinal and renal affections. For its hepatotropic activity the dye is indicated in hepatic affections.
Perennial aromatic grass, 20-50 cm. of height, very ramified. It´s native of the Mediterranean and western Asia, thoroughly cultivated in mountainous, temperate and subtropical areas of America and the Caribbean. For its carminative, espamolitic, antitusigen, expectorant, secretory, germicide, and astringent properties is suitable in respiratory (asthma, cold, flu, bronchitis, emphysema, cough) and digestive affections (disquinesia biliar, slow digestion, gastritis, meteorismo, spasms, parasitosis, colitis, inappetence).
Valerian (Valerian pinnatífida R and P)
It´s an herbaceous plant, of approximately 30 cm. of height with tuberous root with characteristic scent. It grows in Andean valleys between 2900 and 3000 meters above sea level. Some species also grow in the coastal hills of Peru. It has antispasmodic, sedative properties for the central nervous system. It is used in the insomnia and anxiety treatment.
This is an annual or perennial, ramified grass. It´s native of North America. For its febrifuge and sudorific properties and the apparent toxicity lack, it´s indicated in the treatment of digestive and respiratory affections.
This plant is used in cases of dark stains of the skin.
