Geology Facts and Figures

WARNING: CONSTRUCTION ZONE
I am just getting started on this part so stay tuned. I am going to put some
facts, figures, pictures and tables about Earth Sciences on this page.
If you have any suggestions, just email 'em to me!

the geological timescale

This is the currently accepted version of the Geologic timescale according to the American Geological Institute. The dates are approximate. Geologist correlate major events in the Earths history (such as extinctions, volcanoes, meteor impacts, etc.) with radiometric dating. This is a process that uses known rates of decay for different isotopes to establish exact ages for different rocks

cross section of the earth

This is a representation of the Earth viewed in cross section. As you can see, the crust that we live on is very thin compared to the rest of the planet. As the depth from the surface increases many changes take place in the composition and conditions of the Earth. Temperature and pressure both increase with depth, until rocks are actually molten. The rocks also become more rich in elements like Iron, Nickel, and Magnesium.

evolution through time

Life on Earth has undergone many changes since its humble beginnings several billion years ago. At different points in history different forms of life have been more abundant than they are today. The diagram gives an idea of the relative abundance of different forms of life over time.
