So how many of you are fighting mad about the lack of acknowledgment of the animals' voice? Who has had their fill of the indiscriminate murder of innocent animals by so called 'shelters'? What you are about to hear is Truly SAD!!!
I've been trying for the past couple of weeks to unsuccessfully locate a foster home for 2 of our rescue dogs whose family was to be evicted from their home due to finances. They apparently found themselves being removed from the property by the Marshals and we weren't available to answer their call at the time it happened. They couldn't wait on getting in touch with us I guess, and took the 2 dogs they had to the local animal shelter. The people had given our name and number to the 'shelter' folk saying the dogs had come from us.
This is where the story gets UGLY! They no sooner were on the way out the door of the 'shelter', and out of fear the one dog, Josee (a one year old female) growled and snapped...didn't bite anyone...so they put her down immediately, right then and there. She was a Very Sweet puppy and had been the victim of abuse before we'd originally rescued her this past year. She was understandably scared at the 'shelter'. She wasn't given a moment's chance, nor were we EVER contacted to say 2 of our dogs were being held at the place! The only reason we found out the dogs were there was the family later called us and left a message saying they'd taken Josee and Jaida to the 'shelter' the day this all happened.
Shelter was closed until Tuesday, so we couldn't talk to anyone there until then. Mitchel called first thing and was told Josee had been destroyed since she'd shown to be aggressive! Then they told him we couldn't have Jaida. We would have to apply for her and have a home inspection done before being approved. That went for any foster home we may have as well. They did not consider the one foster home we had that is also a licensed kennel to be acceptable since it was farther out than they were willing to go for an inspection. If we wanted any further discussion, he would have to speak with another person. He was also told that we couldn't have Jaida because they didn't deal with us...the rescue organization. Never mind the fact that we have a contract providing proof of prior and continued ownership of dog no matter who may have adopted it and who they may have signed a surrender form over to.
Mitchel spoke with someone in addition as told to and was told the same thing again. Now it wouldn't have been such a big deal if we had a permanent foster home already set up for Jaida. Still, all in all, we are a rescue group and have papers showing prior ownership of dog, and really Shouldn't have to go through their required home inspection. But even beyond that, these are the same people/shelter that Mary had attempted to adopt a dog for her mom; they set 2 appointments for home inspections and neither time did anyone Ever show or even call to say they wouldn't be there for the inspections that her mom had taken off from work for. And this was for a dog that the shelter said had to have serious surgery to the tune of over $200 if adopted.
I'm EXTREMELY angry that they murdered Josee in the first place without ever contacting us to let us know they had our dog to begin with. Now they are threatening to do the same to Jaida if we don't get her out of there immediately since she has been 'acting up' in their words!!!
Oh, and BTW, you'll all love this one, when speaking with someone who is supposedly a part of the rescuing network in this area, the man told me that I shouldn't find fault with the man in charge of the shelter as he is an animal rights person and a vegetarian after all, who wouldn't just put down animals for no reason at all. And that after all, I should understand that saving an aggressive dog would mean death to a non aggressive dog since the shelter wouldn't have room for it. My argument to him was that this was our dog to begin with and they never even bothered to call us to let us know it was there before deciding to murder her immediately after receiving her. What I didn't tell him was that the person had told Mitchel that the dog was now their property and theirs to do with as they saw fit...!
Now you all know why I have called this meeting of the minds. I'm ready to take this issue to the table and have something done about it. We've dealt with all of the shelters in this area for several years now including this one in question, and this is the first time that we have been met with such resistance and lack of cooperation in getting a dog out, much less one of our own that we have paperwork on!!! I am Sooooooo over (angry. mad. So upset words will never suffice in explanation of intense feelings of rage toward STUPIDITY AND IGNORANCE!!! CRUELTY!!!) so called 'shelters' that have no concern for the animals and am ready to take them nationally to task! I've decided to start a national campaign on behalf of all animals in this country that are being murdered due to ignorance and stupidity like our Josee was and Jaida very well may be. What I'd like from all of you is to get some assistance in this endeavor and see if any of you would be willing to become a part of our network on this issue.
I'd like suggestions, help in organization, help in furthering the cause of the poor helpless creatures at the mercy of these so called 'shelters' that are nothing more than murdering zones. This site will be putting up a page of stories to enlighten the remainder of the public as to the plight of not only rescue animals, but also personal pets. Join our campaign to educate and eliminate the unreasonable destruction of innocent animals.
Better communication and cooperation between rescue groups and shelters, SPCAs, and Humane Society facilities.
Better atmosphere that will lead to increased awareness of the pets' voice.
Better working relationship between local governments and rescue groups.
