A Collection of Family History Stories
from Brooke County School Children

This is a collection of stories written by children, telling of their families. We plan to compile a similar book each year. This is our way of encouraging children to appreciate their own family and creating an interest in genealogy. The first book of stories were collected during Brooke Counties Bicentennial Year 1997. It was recommended by the Brooke County Board of Education that this become an annual project. A Special Thanks to all of you who have contributed your stories. This book was done with permission of the Brooke County Board of Education, these family history stories were collected from Follansbee Middle School, Wellsburg Middle School and Brooke High School writing labs.
Stone SoupThis is an old folk story about a traveler who has a magic soup stone. As in any oft repeated folk story, there are many versions. This is our adaptation.....There was an old traveler who carried a magic soup stone in his pack. When he came into the village he told of his magic soup stone and the villagers wanted to see how it worked. He asked for a large pot and filled it with water. He built a fire under it and threw in a magic stone. As the pot boiled he pretended the soup was doing well. Making much fuss about the wonderful soup, he mentioned it maybe needed just a little something else. One woman said she had a few potatoes, another an onion and others volunteered other ingredients until soon there was a large kettle of very good soup for everyone to eat. The soup stone did not, of course, add any of its own essence to the soup, not was it even strictly necessary except as an inducement. This book is a soup stone . You need only add to the pot the ingredients of motivation, willingness to learn and self-discipline.......then....turn up the heat and let the water boil |
