Frances Payne- 1864--8-22-1936.

An automobile which plunged down a steep embankment on White Oak last Saturday afternoon carried Mrs. Francis Payne 72 years old, to her instant death, and her 4 year old grandson, Lewis Combs, died early Monday as results of a fractured skull which he received in the accident. 4 others who were occupants of the car at the time, were injured but their injuries were described as minor. State police are holding the driver of the car on charges of manslaughter. The auto was a Ford Roadster with a rumble seat, officials said, and it rolled over 5 times in its 100 ft plunge down the hill. The road was narrow at the point of the accident and one of the wheels broke over the burm and sent the car headlong down the steep incline. Mrs. Payne was dead when help reached her, and the injured were rushed to the hospital.

The Funeral services for Mrs. Payne were held at Cicerone Sunday afternoon under the direction of the Mays Mortuary. Services for the grandson were held on Tuesday. Oley Hackney of Advent the driver of the car was arrested by state police on a charge of reckless driving and the charge was later changed to manslaughter. He, himself received bruises and cuts in the accident. Another of Mrs. Payne's grandchildren, Clara Combs 10 years old received a broken shoulder. Two other grandchildren Ollie Combs 8, Nina Combs 10 escaped with minor bruises and cuts. V.C. Cobb another occupant of the car, received minor injuries. The auto which carried Mrs. Payne to her death was complete wreck, according to those who visited the scene of the accident.
