The Smith Family

Samuel Smith is a mystery. We are not sure who he is or where he came from. I have information from George C. Smith, who is the grandson of Samuel. His parents being Harvey and Elizabeth Adkins Smith.
Uncle George came to visit every summer, he is my great grandmother Sarah Smith Honaker's brother. I have a copy of a cassette tape that his grandson Billy Mason made around 1976. It was given to my by Uncle George's son Elden.
In the tape, he states that Mahala was a widow when she and Samuel married.
He says that Jessee, Almira, and Nancy are children from the first marriage. He also includes a "Lish" which I take to probably be Elisha and an "Arter" which may be Arthur or Arter.
We know that Jessee and Almira are Adkins' so we would assume that "Lish" and "Arter" are also Adkins. They are not listed in census information 1850 and forward with Samuel and Mahala and I have not been able to find anyone with these names who could fit in the family.
In the early Cabell County Marriage records, Samuel and Mahala are listed to have been married in 1847, at that time, Samuel listed his name as John.
Since Alexander and John are born before this marriage date, they may be the children of Samuel and a first wife. Sarah may be a sister to them and not the child of Mahala.
