Maybe GHS's biggest rival since 1994.  For those who don't remember here is how it started.  Mt. Hope beat us that year 10-8.  The game had several controversial calls that always went against Gilbert.

The next year saw the Lions rally in the 4th quarter behind 2 Wes Ellis TD's to beat the Mustangs at Gilbert.  Mt. Hope took the loss bad.  Several of their fans accused their kids of quitting and not having what it took to beat Gilbert.  The eventual State Champions I might add.

In 1996, Anthony Brown and Brock Mounts led the Lions back to Mt. Hope to play in the best high school football game I have ever saw.  The Lions won thanks to a Robert Shepard TD reception late in the game.  No one who was there that year will forget Anthony Brown hitting Major Newsom or Jamie Ward getting hit by Jimmy Parker.  As I said this was the best game I have ever saw.

1997 saw Daniel Mounts fumble severl times while rushing for almost 200 yards in a Lion victory.  Gilbert dominated that game with the exception of the turnovers.

1998 saw the Lions bounce back form a awful week one experience at Sheldon Clark and defeat the Mustangs on there home turf.  Daniel Mounts again turned in another high rushing total that night.

What will 1999 hold for the Lions and Mustangs?  Well you can bet on one thing Mt. Hope hates Gilbert!  I personally don't like them either.

Mt. Hope suffered a week one defeat to Covington Va.  Although they are expected to be weaker this year than they have been in years past look for it to be a hard hitting affair when they roll into Gilbert come September 3rd.

Running the ball for Mt. Hope this year will be 5'10 170lbs Sr. Jack Toombs.

Two big offensive lineman return for the Mustangs. Mark Canterbury 6'1 270lbs. and Nathan Skaggs 5'11 210lbs.

Mt. Hope sophomore Jarred Pillman will start at WR and DB.

Despite a lack in players you can bet Eddie Souk will have his kids ready to play Gilbert if no one else.
