Dragons' Courtyard

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

**You walk through the stone archway leading outside to an enclosed courtyard full of Dragons of all types. They talk amoung themselves and do not seem to notice your presence. On the stone wall directly opposite you across the yard is a sterling plaque carved with these words:

The Scriptions here have been painstakingly supplied by Draes, and I thank her graciously.

~Coriaxis ~ Keeper~

You look around the walls and now notice that they are covered with words, Dragon descriptions specifically, meticulously carved by a Dragon's own claw.**

Please keep in mind that the information on these walls is not meant to be taken as what I think of as law - it is simple factual material. However there are many opinions about Dragons and their particular's - it is advisable to wander around and gather as much information as possible to form your own concept of what a Dragon is. And never take anyone's word as to how they view a Dragon, because we are all biased };=8}. The imagination when created has no limits, so keep an open mind and don't place restrictions on yours. Meanwhile, read these descriptions, and decide for yourself as to their value. Ta'ni.

The Western

The Western Dragon is what most people think of when they hear the word "Dragon." The Western has a lizard-like body, which can be either serpentine or resembling that of an alligator. They have forelegs and hindlegs, the former usually considered to be arms rather than legs. They also have 1 pair of functioning wings - bat- or pteronodon-like - fully capable of air travel. They can walk either upright or on all four's, depending on the individual preference of the Dragon. Size usually ranges from 15 feet to lengths of over 100 feet. Western Dragons are usually thought to be manevolent, disagreeable creatures who hoard gold, kidnap helpless maidens, and in the end are inevitably slain by the knight in shining armor - who then marries the maiden. In their spare time they make meals of cows, and the occasional hapless wandering minstrel or vagabond. This stereotype can only be denied by restating the fact that - it is a stereotype. Not all Westerns - or Dragons in general - are evil. As it applies, temperament depends on individual disposition. Some of us are really rather lovable. }:=8}

The Drake

The Drake is basically a Western Dragon without wings. Chinese and Japanese - Oriental - Dragons are always Drakes. Oriental Dragons are, however, symbols of luck and good fortune, some guarding the temples of the gods in the sky - whereas the typical concept of Dragons is on the whole a rather negative viewpoint. My human body has a tattoo of a Tribal Drake on her back. It is very interesting.

The Wyrm

The Wyrm is the oldest a Dragon can become. Dragons can only BECOME Wyrms. Wyrms do not have any limbs whatsoever. They are very wise and very hard to find. It is a rare opportunity when we can encounter a creature such as this. Wyrms do not have any biases - they are too old to involve themselves in petty grudges - they know better than that. Mostly they do not take interest in mortal plight - or anything at all fot that matter. If found in favorable mood, they will answer questions and give advice.

The Lindwyrm

The Lindwyrm is a Dragon with only one pair of legs, and no wings. These creatures are purported to be hostile and rather stupid, but then again there is such a thing as a smart human - though it is a rare occurence - so you never know. There is intelligence of some kind found in every species. Lindwyrms live undergroung in tunnels, and prey on animal's smaller and weaker than themselves, for the obvious reason that they do have to be able to catch their prey, and having only one pair of limbs makes that rather difficult. Mostly they scavenge, because it is easy.

The Amphiptere

The Amphiptere is a type of Dragon with only a pair of wings and no other appendages. I personally do not know very much specific information on this type, so i'll leave it at that until my endless quest for knowledge turns up further details.

The Wyvern

The Wyvern Has one pair of wings - usaully acting as their fore-arms as well as simply flight devices - and one pair of legs. The Wyvern is basically the same in all aspects as the standard Western, and again my knowledge of them is limited, so I will wait for more information.

The Hydra

The Hydra comes from an ancient Greek Mythological Tale called "Hercules." I am sure that you, reader, are farmiliar with the story. It goes along the lines of: Hercules was the slayer of a fierce Dragon with 7 heads, in Latin called the "hydra". He had to cut the heads off to kill the monster, but from every head he cut off, two new ones would spring. He finally realized that in order to kill the Hydra, he had to burn the neck of each head after he had cut it off, to cauterize it and stop new heads from growing back. When there was only one head left - the main head - Hercules decapitated it and burned the stump, and the creature fell to the ground and melted away into the earth, finally dead. It is said that now upon that ground, the most beautiful wildflowers grow.

While this tale is all well and entertaining, it is after all, merely a tale. In actuality, a Hydra can have anywhere from 2 to 100+ heads, and whether or not severed heads do actually grow back has never been determined, as these strange mutant-like Dragons are rare indeed.
