Recruitment

Do you own a horse?

Are you interested in the Civil War?

Do you like camping?

Would you like to spend 8 weekends a year having fun?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you might be a recruit. If you are interested in joining our unit, please contact us by e-mail at the bottom of the page.

Some frequently asked questions of new recruits are:

How much will it cost?

There is quite a bit of money involved in reenacting. Mounted cavalry is probably the most expensive branch to do. First of all, you have to have a horse. Horses can cost anywhere from $800-$1500. You will also need a trailer to haul your horses in and a truck that will pull your trailer. This could cost anywhere from $20,000-$60,000, unless you already have a horse, truck, and trailer. You need a saddle, which could be anywhere from $300-$500. Then you need a uniform, pistols, a carbine, accessories, and a tent. This could be anywhere from $1500-$2500.

You could get into quite a bit of money here. If you would like to come to a couple of reenactments before you decide to join, we usually have an extra horse, uniform, pistols, and we also have a company tent.

How much are the dues?

There are no dues to join our unit. We all believe that by the time you have bought everything you need to do this hobby, you have already paid enough. Most events we go to are free, so the only expense will be getting the equiptment for reenacting.

What about insurance?

We are members of the Valley Division, so we get our insurance through there. It cost $10 a year. This covers your horse and you from the time you leave your house to go to a reenactment until the time you return.

Is there a minimum of reenactments I must attend?

No. Almost all of our members have jobs that require them once in a while to work on the weekends. We do no require that you attend any certain number of events. If you choose to attend one a year, that would be fine with us. We all realize this is a hobby, and sometimes you cannot go to an event.

We always try to have our biggest turnout at our home event, Laurel Hill, and Guyandotte. If you can only come to two events a year, these are the ones to come to.

I want to do this. How do I join?

You can send me an e-mail and I will get back in contact with you and give you some numbers of people to talk to.
