Forward ~ BACKLASH IS HERE!
Wrestlemania is over and done with... no matter the outcome, we must look ahead and keep trying... for bigger and more difficult challenges face us... now the pressures of holding a title face one individual... all will vie for the title... friends and enemies... retaliation will be made... the backlash from Wrestlemania will be brutal... everybody has marked a target on one man’s chest... but one thing is for sure, everybody has been marked as NEXT!
Scene 1 ~
The scene opens up in the Rexall Place in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. In just under twenty-four hours, in this very same arena, what some are considering the match of all ages, will happen here. Now, however, we must settle with an interview. The scene opens up in a locker room... Goldberg’s locker room. The atmosphere is very intense. Goldberg is seen silently, staring down his World Heavyweight Title belt. A knock is heard at the door as Goldberg finally breaks his trance. He gets up and walks over. He opens it up to find Coach’s head poking in.
| ‘Cocky Interviewer’ Coach | “Goldberg! What’s happening, my man?”
Goldberg doesn’t answer.
| ‘Cocky Interviewer’ Coach | “Oh, come on, Goldberg. I know I’m one of the least people you want to see right now, but I got some exclusive information on Triple H...”
| ‘Da Man’ Goldberg | “Fine, then.”
Goldberg opens up the door all the way, allowing Coach to enter. Coach walks in and sits down, ready to begin the interview. Goldberg closes the door and then also sits down.
| ‘Cocky Interviewer’ Coach | “First of all, what do you think that match will be like?”
| ‘Da Man’ Goldberg | “It’s going to be a tough match, no doubt about it. You got three of the best in the WWE in one match... something is bound to happen. The match will seem to be up in the air the entire time... until the end that is. Until the end when I capitalize on someone’s mistake... until I deliver the Spear. That will be the turning point in this match. That will be the moment when everybody realizes that I am not a one hit wonder. The moment when everybody realizes that I can defend this title, too. The moment when everybody realizes that I really am Da Man!”
| ‘Cocky Interviewer’ Coach | “What is your overall opinion of both Jericho and Triple H?”
| ‘Da Man’ Goldberg | “Well, they both have obviously gained a free ride. I don’t mean to be repetitive, but I never just received that Wrestlemania title shot. I beat out thirty other men in the Royal Rumble. That is what I had to go through just to get a shot at the title. Then I had to beat out Shawn Michaels and Triple H. Triple H was given that shot at Wrestlemania. Now this time around, he had to defeat Shawn Michaels to get the shot, but Shawn didn’t even put up a fight. Then Jericho just gets added to the match... Neither of my opponents have held the World Heavyweight Title. They have no idea the pressures and the determination you need. When you are the champion, you are the center of attention... but that’s not a good thing. You have a target on your chest from the moment you win this title to the moment you lose it. Triple H, Chris Jericho, you two think you have what it takes to become the champion... to steal a line from Triple H, you two couldn’t even hold up my jock!”
| ‘Cocky Interviewer’ Coach | “Triple H said that he was not given this title shot, but rather he earned it. Do you agree?”
| ‘Da Man’ Goldberg | “Yeah, maybe he did win a match to get this shot... but what about Wrestlemania? Oh, how the past seems so easy to forget. Then we have Jericho... Triple H, I agree with you in saying that Jericho was given this shot out of nowhere. He doesn’t deserve it, but Shane still felt the need to have a Corporate Alliance member entered in. I say that Triple H and myself take out the trash first. If you know what I mean, I say we eliminate Jericho, the man who was given this shot, and the we fight it out ourselves. The only way Jericho will walk out as the champion tonight is if I am dead. That’s right, the only way he will walk out as the World Heavyweight Champion is over my dead body!”
| ‘Cocky Interviewer’ Coach | “Triple H has said that he can’t wait to take away your number one spot at the top of the WWE when he defeats you for the World Title. He also said that his winning streak isn’t luck. Do you agree with any of this?”
| ‘Da Man’ Goldberg | “Well, I agree that he will take away my number one spot at the top if he defeats me for the World Heavyweight Title... I agree with that except for the fact that it won’t happen. If he did happen to beat me, yeah, it would happen. But this title is staying around my waist, plain and simple. Nobody knows the extremities in which I will go through to retain my title. I will put body on the line and I will give it my all. I will not stop fighting until I am dead. This title is my life... this title is what I think about each and every day that I’m in the ring. Those few months between the Royal Rumble and Wrestlemania were hell just knowing that I did not have the title around my waist. I am not about to go back to that time. I have worked too hard to just lose this title in one month. It won’t happen...”
| ‘Cocky Interviewer’ Coach | “What about Triple H’s ‘luck’?”
| ‘Da Man’ Goldberg | “That’s exactly what it is... luck. Triple H, you can deny it all you want, but luck is all that you’ve been having lately. But at Backlash, Hunter, your luck has run out. Your luck got you here, now you have to do this yourself.”
| ‘Cocky Interviewer’ Coach | “Triple H, as well as many other superstars, have insisted that you are nothing but hype... Are you?”
| ‘Da Man’ Goldberg | “Am I nothing but hype? Well, for starters I’m the World Heavyweight Champion. I am not hype... but the hype surrounds me wherever I go. It’s obvious Triple H and Jericho have already heard it... they have heard all of the hype... oh, Goldberg is Da Man. He won one hundred and seventy-six matches in a row in WcW. He is the World Heavyweight Champion. It’s all just hype... just talk to scare you. You can believe that if you really want, hell, you can believe anything you want. But when it comes down to it, when I am looking into your beady little eyes after I have just pinned you for the title, then you will realize what the hype was. You will realize that all the hype was true. So let me just give you a warning... BELIEVE THE HYPE!”
| ‘Cocky Interviewer’ Coach | “Triple H also said that all three of you guys know what it’s like to lose a match... How does losing make you feel?”
| ‘Da Man’ Goldberg | “Yeah, I have lost before... and it sucks. But that feeling is no way near as bad as losing a World Heavyweight Title shot in front of the millions watching across the country. That is the worst feeling you can have in this industry. I am not about to let that happen to me. But no matter what, two men will share that feeling tonight. They will know what it’s like to lose a match of that caliber. And those two men will be Chris Jericho and Triple H.”
| ‘Cocky Interviewer’ Coach | “Chris Jericho probably has the most on the line here. That is what a lot of people have been saying... Who do you think has the most on the line?”
| ‘Da Man’ Goldberg | “I do. I have the most on the line tonight. If Triple H and Jericho lose, they will lose something they never had. But if I lose tonight, I will lose my title. Jericho and Triple H have absolutely nothing to lose... I, on the other hand, I have my whole life... my whole career. I have spent my whole life training to get this title and now just because I have it does not mean I’m going to just give it up. I will fight until I can no longer physically fight. But to answer your question, Coach, I have the most on the line.”
| ‘Cocky Interviewer’ Coach | “Jericho has a chance to walk away tonight with three titles around his waist... well, probably one on each shoulder and one around his waist... anyway, you know what I mean. Do you think Jericho can become the first ever triple champion?”
| ‘Da Man’ Goldberg | “To tell you the truth, Coach, I don’t think he is World Championship material. He is a tremendous athlete, no doubt about it. He can perform moves of perfection. He has a certain stamina in which he never seems to give up. He does have the chance to become a triple champion tonight, but only one problem. There is a 6’4”, 260 lbs., Triple H, and a 6’4”, 283 lbs., Goldberg, standing in his way. Jericho has a chance of a lifetime, but I don’t see him capitalizing on it. I don’t think Jericho will be able to get the win tonight...”
| ‘Cocky Interviewer’ Coach | “Back to Triple H... He said that the WWE superstars are here to entertain the fans... with their injuries. Do you agree?”
| ‘Da Man’ Goldberg | “Coach, the fans don’t like to see wrestlers injured. I don’t know what Triple H is smoking but the fans love to see their favorite superstars in action. Well, maybe they would like to see Triple H injured and put in a hospital tonight. Well, that can be arranged. Triple H, you can tell the world that you don’t owe the fans a damn thing until you die. But you know deep down inside that these fans are the people that made you. There’s no better rush to walk out to 30,000 screaming fans all chanting one name... your name. That is what gets my adrenaline pumping. That is what gets my psyched. That is what gets me in the zone. Triple H, maybe you don’t like the fans because they don’t like you. The fans know how much of an asshole you are so they boo the hell out of you. And that is what gets you mad. So you blame the fans. But you’re the one to blame, Hunter.”
| ‘Cocky Interviewer’ Coach | “Last Thursday on SMACKDOWN!, the show ended with both you and Jericho knocked out. Triple H stood over you two, holding your World Title high over his head. Many people have said that is what will happen tonight...”
| ‘Da Man’ Goldberg | “Yeah, Triple H was standing over me holding my World Title. But Triple H, you know deep inside that when you touched this title, you realized its prestige. You realized that it really is what you fight for. You realized that this is what you want. But this is exactly what I realized when I won this. I realized that everything I have ever fought for was worth winning that title at Wrestlemania. I had never expected that winning the title would be that great... but it was. Triple H, you can take my title and hold it over me, but you will not beat me for it. Every dog has its day, and Triple H, your day has passed. You need to step aside and realize that its not your time... you need to realize that we are in the Goldberg Era... and it’s just getting started.”
| ‘Cocky Interviewer’ Coach | “Anything else you would like to say to Jericho and Triple H?”
| ‘Da Man’ Goldberg | “Guys, the moment is here. You guys have waited for this match your entire career. This is your chance to prove yourselves... but this is my chance, too. You guys say that I haven’t proved anything and your right. But after I beat you two tonight, I will prove once again why I am the World Heavyweight Champion. The time slowly ticks away... Backlash is coming. I am focused for this match and there is no way in hell I will lose. Right now, this match is more important than my Wrestlemania match. Now I must prove that I’m not a one hit wonder... I must prove that I can defend this title... and I must prove that I am the true World Heavyweight Champion. Get ready, guys... your fifteen minutes of fame are coming to an end. It will all end when I pin one of you for the 1...2...3! As my music hits, I will look down at you and whisper these words... I AM THE WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION! I hope you guys have prepared for this match... I hope this match lives up to its hype. But one thing is for damn sure, Jericho, Hunter... YOU’RE NEXT!!!”
The scene fades out as Coach and Goldberg remain silent...
