AGE: 81 NEW BRUNSWICK



Richard Jay Nelson, 81, of New Brunswick died Friday, May 1, 2009, surrounded by his family at his residence. Born in New Brunswick he was a lifelong city resident. He had worked in the maintenance department for the New Brunswick Board of Education for 35 years before retiring in 1992. Prior to that he was a police officer in New Brunswick. He was a member of the New Brunswick Education Association. Mr. Nelson was a communicant of St. Peter the Apostle R.C. Church in New Brunswick. He was a member of the B.P.O. Elks #324 of New Brunswick. He had served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He was an avid golfer and a fan of the New York Yankees and New York Giants.

He was predeceased by his parents, Leslie C., Sr. and Agnes Schmidt Nelson and by a brother, Leslie C. Nelson, Jr. Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Mary L. Aldrich Nelson; a son, William R. Nelson and his wife Tomasa of North Brunswick; three daughters, Valerie M. Moreen and her husband Ronald of Somerset, Jaye M. Shawiak and her husband David of North Brunswick and Lori M. Nelson of Clark; eight grandchildren, Richard and Ronald Moreen, Rocco and Keri Maimone, Kristina Shawiak, Nicole Grana and Enver and Cynthia Cortes; and five great grandchildren, Ashlyn, RJ, Alexandra, JayJay and Sienna. Funeral services will be 9:00 a.m. Tuesday at Selover Funeral Home, 555 Georges Road, North Brunswick. Interment will follow in Resurrection Burial Park in Piscataway. Friends and relatives may call at the funeral home Monday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.
