The sixth USS Ranger was the USN's First carrier built from the keel up. Despite the fact that it was an extremely small, cramp and miserable craft, resulting in no other vessels of the class.
It is also the only class prior to WW2 to have a metal reinforced flight deck, as all other American Carriers had hardwood decks. This proved invaluable in the European theater where the German Luftwaffe preyed on Allied Shipping.
