After Wink Martindale departed from the show in 1985 to pursue hosting a game show he created called Headline Chasers [which flopped after one season], a new host was needed for Tic Tac Dough. From a nationwide search, the people at Barry & Enright selected Jim Caldwell. Jim was freshly released from his contract co-hosting New York City's P.M. Magazine. Not only for the next season did the show get a new host, but the set went under a huge makeover as well.

Needless to say without Wink hosting and not enough stations wanting to buy the show, Tic Tac Dough was cancelled after the 1986 season.
