Wrestling Terminology

I think I got them all. Let me know if I missed one.

A


A-Game a wrestlers very best effort.
A-Show A big time wrestling show like RAW or Smackdown.
A-Team The wrestlers on an A-Show.
Angle A scripted storyline or feud

B


Babyface A good guy and fan favorite.
B-Show A smaller wrestling show like Heat or Velocity.
B-Team The Wrestlers on a B-Show.
Blade Act of cutting self with small razor blade to produce blood as visual effect, also called Blade Job, gigging, juicing, or slicing.
Blade Job the act of being cut with small razor blade by opponent.
Blowup Becoming fatigued or exhausted.
Booker Someone who takes part in deciding how a match finishes and how angles go. Sometimes is a high status wrestler.
Bootleg An illegally sold item, usually a possession of a wrestler such as a towel or shirt.
Breakdown A wrestler has his opponent on the mat.
Breaking KayfabeWhen a wrestler acts like their normal selves out of the ring and in front of fans.
Bump A fall or shot taken by someone during a match, usually knocks them from ring.
Bury Lowering someone down by trash talking them.

C


Call a Match Commentating on a match.
Card The lineup of matches for a shows episode.
Cut a Promo To do an interview, or begin ranting in the ring.

D


Dark Match A match on a televised event not shown on TV.
Decision Winning a match with a pinfall, submission, countout, disqualification, or other means; such as Iron Man Matches where the winner has the most wins by the end of an allotted time period.
Draw Attracting fans. Also a superstar who attracts fans. A match that ends with no clear winner.
Dud A weak or uninteresting match. Used to describe lower than the bottom of the Star Rating System.

F


Face A good guy or a fan favorite. Aka Babyface.
Fall The referee's count of three on a pin.
Feud A series of matches between two wrestlers or teams, and is usually face vs heel.
Finish The climax of a match, the last few moments when a finisher is applied or a submission locked in place.
Finisher A wrestlers finishing move.
Foreign Object A foreign object that is not suppose to be used in the match. Also called international object.

G


Gimmick The in-ring personality of a wrestlers.
Gold A championship belt.
Gorilla Position The position right before the enterance curtains where the wrestlers stand before going out to a match. Named after the late Gorrilla Monsoon.
Green A rookie or someone just starting in the business; someone who has lower ability than some of the others.

H


Hand Control Dominance over opponents hands.
Hardway Legitimately bleeding, not caused by a blade.
Heat A large response from the crowd to a wrestler. When a wrestler is in trouble with backstage officials.
Heel A bad guy or rule breaker.
High Spot Highflying moves generally performed by cruiserweights.
House The fans at the arena.
House Show A show not shown on TV.

J


International Object An object that is illegal, but is normally carried by someone outside the ring or in someone's corner.

J


Jabroni Slang for jobber.
Job A scripted loss for one opponent in the match, usually to make one look good.
Jobber Someone who consistently looses their matches; a person hired or schedualed to lose their match to put someone else over.

K


Kayefabe Wrestlers remaining in character out of the ring. ~Breaking Kayfabe~ is when a wrestler acts normal in public.

M


Main Eventer A big name wrestler in a match for a championship belt.
Mark A gullible fan who believes what they see at face value, the opposite of a smart. Also used to describe an enthusiastic fan.
Mark Out Finding great excitement in a certain part of the show. Used to describe fans that don't know they're marks.
Mid Carder A wrestler used casually, but with little airtime. Normally used as a filler or every other week.

N


Neutral Position Where both wrestlers are standing.
No Show When a wrestler does not appear for a match.

O


Over Being popular with the fans.

P


Pin A wrestler has his opponent's shoulders on the mat and is covering for a fall.
Plant A person in the audience posing as a fan, usually to encourage a desired heat from the crowd. Most often they are there for a run-in sometime during the show.
Pop A sudden reaction from the crowd in response to a wrestlers entrance, trademark move, catch phrase, or gimmick.
Post To be run into one of the ring posts.
Potato When the head of a wrestler is injured.
Pulled Punch A chop, punch, or kick that is not given with its full force.
Push A series of matches to make a wrestler look good.
Put Over To win a match just as a result of a push or status. ex: when a jobber loses to a main eventer.

R


Ref Bump A fall or hit taken by the referee, usually taking them out to allow a convenient opportunity for illegal hits by one member of the match.
Resthold A slow moment in the match, usually a submission move, which may allow wrestlers to catch their breath before continuing.
Reversal Where the defensive wrestler gains control, usually after countering a finisher.
Run-in Interference by an outside participant.

S


Save A run-in to help a wrestler after a match is over.
Screw Job A match that does not end cleanly because of foreign objects, interference or not by pin fall, or to the displeasure of the fans. Is also a term for a real loss as a result with one opponent knowing the ending and the other not.
Shoot An unscripted event where there is no predetermined winner. To stop cooperating with the other people in a work match and veer away from the script. An unscripted interviews or mic time.
Smart A fan that knows the inside stories behind what they see, opposite of a mark.
Spot A distinctive point in the match like a complicated mat sequence, a single big move, or a High Spot.
Sprawl Legs pulled from under you, thus landing face down.
Squash A short match where one wrestler completely dominates the other. To dominate completely over the opponent.
Stance The correct standing possession.
Star Rating System A scale ranging from -4 to 4 used to rate matches.
Stick The microphone.
Stiff A chop, punch, or kick that connects harder than an average pulled punch.
Strap A championship belt.
Stretch A shoot where one wrestler dominates the opponent rather than injure them, as a sign of personal superiority.
Submission Hold A move that makes an opponent give up and tap out.

T


Tap Out The result of an opponent giving up the match due to a submission and counting themselves out by pin fall.
Turn When a wrestler changes between face and heel. When a wrestler turns on a single person.~
Tweener Someone that isn't a heel or face. Also known as a Neutral.

W


Work A scripted event where the outcome is already known to those involved.
Workrate A general ratio of active wrestling to restholds like submission moves in the course of a match.
Wrist Control Dominance over opponent's wrists.
Wrist Drop A series of three counts as to where the referee lifts an opponents wrist then lets it drop to the mat. Only used duringa submission where the opponent looks unconcious or unable to finish the match. If the opponents arm hits the mat three times, the match is called.
