Welsh Amateur Wrestling Team

The Welsh Amateur Wrestling Team began in April 2001 and is ran by Balvinder Matharu. We train on a Tuesday at 5.00pm until 6.00pm and on a Thursday at 5.30pm until 7.00pm at Newi College's Sport Centre.

Amateur wrestling is the oldest sport in the olympics and is a sport that requires the use of the whole body. Greater physiological development, flexibility, body awareness, strength and leverage, balance, co-ordination, reaction time, speed and very low body fat is need to become a succesful wrestler.

In wrestling they divide the athletes into age catergories ranging from 6 year olds to senior 18 and older. After the age catergories has been sorted out the weight catergories puts you into your final group that you wrestle in. Your body mass is weighed in kilos for those who don't know it is 2.2 pounds to a kilo.

The team that was sent to Ireland: Daniel (Black shirt), Sam Burgess (Red top), Carl Singh (Blue top), Ashley Wilson (Blue singlet), Coach Balvinder Singh (Big guy pinning tiny Sean on the floor)

We have a good steady team but we are recruiting. If you are interested please e-mail me at the address at the bottom of the page for more details.

Reversal: a movie that is a father/son love story about wrestling, growing up, and letting go.
