On February 14, 2001, "The Franchise" Shane Douglas defeated Tazz for the NGW World Heavyweight Title. After the match, Douglas threw the title down and spat on it. Then taking a mic, he said:

"[Tazz], I didn't build that belt and this house for sh*t like that. I didn't build this belt so someone could come out during a match and masturbate with it. That's called a homosexual dance party, Tazz, and I'm not into that. I'm not f***in' gay, Tazz. And I'm through with this sh*t. I'm starting a new federation that will be so hardcore they can't put it on television. I'm callin' it XUW and I proclaim myself "The Franchise" and the World Champion of XUW. You can all kiss my ass."

The words of Douglas gave birth to Xtreme Underground Wrestling. Unfortunately, Douglas was arrested the following night at 3:07 AM due to his involvement in a brutal bar fight. With Douglas' future in doubt, federation officials decided to hold a tournament for the vacant World Title.
