As The Rock's movie career takes off, WWF guarantees his return to wrestling
The Rock's newest movie, "The Mummy Returns" opened Friday on a limited number of screens nationwide. The PG-13 movie has received relatively good reviews but critical mentions of the Rock are very limited. Do not be fooled by the advertising, The Rock is in no way the star of this movie. In fact, the Rock's appearances in the movie are short and the hype behind it is simply hype. Movie critic Roger Ebert had the following to say:
"The ads give The Rock, the WWF star, equal billing from (Brendan) Fraser. This is bait-and-switch. To call his appearance a "cameo" would be stretching it. I continue to believe The Rock has an acting career ahead of him and, after seeing this movie, I still believe it is still ahead of him."
In a cross-promotional partnership, the WWF is heavily promoting the movie on their website and on television. The Rock is appearing on many television shows to promote it, including the Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn on Friday night.
Contrary to circulating rumors, the Rock is NOT leaving the WWF to pursue a movie career. The WWF publicly stated on Friday that they are 100% sure their biggest star will be back during the summer, after he finishes taping his latest movie - The Scorpion King. The Scorpion King is a prequel to the Mummy movies and he will play the same character as he did in "The Mummy Returns". Unlike "The Mummy Returns", the Rock will be the star of "Scorpion King".
