Weaver wins Yanks debut thanks to plenty of support

W: Weaver (7-8) L: Thurman (1-2)
HR: Tor- Delgado (18), Wells (10) NYY- Jeter (12)
Report: El Duque on block

Luis Bronx Bound.
The addition of Jeff Weaver instantly led to speculation on the future of fellow right-hander Orlando Hernandez. If the Yankees get what they're seeking from the right National League team, Hernandez could be traded by week's end, according to the Newark Star-Ledger. The newspaper reported that New York is attempting to send El Duque out of the AL so they won't have to potentially face him in a crucial game down the stretch. There's also concerns of trading him to an NL team, such as the Cardinals, who they could conceivably face in the World Series. In return, the Yankees are interested in a pair of minor league prospects.

Weaver wins debut
 Jeff Weaver
Weaver gave up a pair of three-run bombs in his debut.
Jeff Weaver, obtained by the Yankees from Detroit in a three-way trade involving Oakland, allowed a pair of three-run home runs, but got the win during the Yankees' 10-6 win over Toronto on July 7. Weaver (7-8) had a 3.18 ERA with the Tigers in 17 starts this season, but got just 3.4 runs of support per game. Nervous in front of the large Yankee Stadium crowd, Weaver quickly fell behind 3-0 in the first, giving up a double by Vernon Wells on his first pitch and a three-run homer to Carlos Delgado one out after an infield single by Shannon Stewart. Wells' three-run shot in the fifth inning broke a 3-3 before the Yankees scored twice in their in the bottom half and then took the lead on Derek Jeter's homer two-run shot in the sixth. Weaver allowed six runs on six hits in seven innings, walking one and striking out five.

Jeff Weaver got the win Sunday, but he still has a long way to go to even things with the Yankees' division rivals. Weaver is just 8-18 against AL East teams other than the Yankees with an ERA over 5.00 against all four teams. He is 32-33 with a 3.94 ERA against the rest of the majors. "It's awesome," Weaver said after his win over Toronto. "This is a whole different ballgame. I haven't seen 10 runs all year ... the Pinstripes fit a little different."

    Can Rocket, Pettitte stay healthy?
If the Yankees have anything to worry about in the second half, it's the durability of starters Andy Pettitte, who made just eight starts in the first half because of elbow problems, and Roger Clemens, who left several starts early because of in-game injuries. In five starts since coming off the disabled list, Pettitte is 1-2 with a 5.47 ERA. Manager Joe Torre scratched Clemens from his final start before the All-Star break to give him ample time to recover from a right leg injury. Perhaps it's a just little bad luck for Clemens, who is 38-8 since coming off the disabled list on July 2, 2000. After all, he is 39 years old!

    Gammons: Big, wise spenders
So the Yankees' payroll is approaching $140 million. It's the system, it's their market, it's their right. And while others dawdled, they went out and cut a deal with the Blue Jays on Raul Mondesi -- a deal that costs them about what Darren Oliver cost the Red Sox. The deal also didn't cost them any of the players they knew they needed to get a pitcher, who turned out to be Jeff Weaver.

The Indians traded Karsay because of his pending free agency. The righthander had said that he wanted to sign with a team that will allow him to start.
