Devil's move to Kansas City
The New Jersey Devils have been completely wiped off the map, according to the NHL. The Devils have relocated to Kansas City and they will play out of a new arena which has yet to be named. The people of Kansas City have been waiting a while for a hockey team to come along, and now they've got one. After the Devils traded away Goalie Martin Brodeur they concluded their turmoil by shipping off to Kansas City. The Devils had been waiting a while to find a new home, and many believed that they would be moving in the next five years, but they were wrong. The Devils threw off everyone by jumping ship and locating in eastern Kansas City where they will be known simply as the Kansas City Devils.

Brodeur to Minnesota in blockbuster deal
Martin Brodeur
Brodeur
No one saw this coming except Brodeur himself, (coach Larry Robinson) was shocked after hearing the news."It comes as a surprise, we thought Marty had been resituated. Obviously not." said Robinson. In the morning hours of Monday, Martin Brodeur received a phone call from Devils executives that he had been traded to the Wild only a week after the Stanley Cup Finals had ended. Brodeur didn't seem to shocked as he heard the news, and Martin looked very pleased to be headed out to Minnesota where he will reunite with old friends in that area. Martin Brodeur was traded for Goalie Manny Fernandez and defenseman Brad Bonmbardir of the Wild and a first round draft pick. Robinson stated earlier that Martin had not been playing to his potential and he wants to ensure the future of the already shakened New Jersey Devils.

Wojnarowski: Blown chance
Martin Brodeur
Brodeur
In the glory days of the Montreal Canadiens, (coach Larry Robinson) won six Cups, including back-to-back championships and it gets harder and harder for him to relate with a modern day champion. He wanted to believe his Devils are comprised of self-starters, self-motivators, and it just wasn't true. He wanted to believe the dressing room policed itself, but it just didn't happen. They needed him to come down harder on playoff penalty transgressions, and he never backed words with deeds. Still, it was Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals and Robinson watched one of his players punch an Avalanche in the face, go to the penalty box and let Joe Sakic get a clear shot on Martin Brodeur.

    An empty feeling
As Ray Bourque's streak of never winning the cup ended, so did coach Larry Robinson's run of never losing the cup, despite his pregame prediction that New Jersey would ruin Denver's prematurely announced plans for a parade. Robinson had been 8-0 in the finals as a player, assistant coach and head coach, but that streak ended as Colorado -- which had lost Game 7s to Dallas in the Western Conference finals the past two seasons -- won its second cup in six seasons. "I felt very confident going into this game, very confident," said Robinson. "It's 1-0, we took a stupid penalty, it's 2-0 and you are fighting the rest of the game to get back."

    John Vanbiesbrouck
    Vanbiesbrouck
Backup goaltender John Vanbiesbrouck ended his NHL career by retiring shortly after the Devils lost the Stanley Cup. Vanbiesbrouck, who was acquired late in the season from the Islanders, was hoping to end his career with his first cup, but it didn't happen. "I just feel like it's time to pursue other endeavors," said Vanbiesbrouck, who didn't see any action in the playoffs. "I came in as a young 18-year-old in Colorado and played my first game. It's ironic my last game is here, too. It's been a special 20 years."

    Morganti: Reap what you sow
For the Devils, it was like they were little kids who did something wrong and their mother said "serves you right." They couldn't button this thing down when they had the chance, just like they couldn't button down other series. It seems they thought they could always turn it on when they had to. But Colorado is an elite team, even without Peter Forsberg. The Devils had their opportunities to sew this thing up. But it always seemed to take them a while to realize the quicksand they were in.

  • The Devils avoided becoming the first team to be shut out three times in the finals since the 1965 Blackhawks.
  • Martin Brodeur played in 97 games this season, the most in any season by a goalie, but coach Larry Robinson discounted fatigue: "I don't think so," said Robinson. "They had the crowd and the adrenaline."

  • Colorado outscored New Jersey 15-2 in its four victories.
  • New Jersey played 25 playoff games this season, one short of Philadelphia's 1987 league record.
  • Colorado became the first team since the 1964 Maple Leafs to win a Game 6 on the road when trailing 3-2 in the finals.
  • The Avs forced the first Game 7 in the finals since the Rangers beat the Canucks in 1994 and only the fourth since 1967.

  • Acting Gov. Donald T. DiFrancesco has devised a plan to build a sports arena in Newark that involves no direct state funding, a county executive said Wednesday. "It appears that an agreement has been reached to provide for a method of funding for an arena in Newark," said Bergen County Executive Pat Schuber. "There would be no direct state appropriation for it."
