Scouting Report 2002 Season Tony Clark's power stroke seemingly deserted him over the last two months of 2001 and he was waived by Detroit after that season ended. The Red Sox claimed him and he opened 2002 as their starting first baseman, but he started ice-cold. He'd gotten off to poor starts before, but this time he never pulled out of it, and by August he was riding the pine. Hitting, Baserunning & Defense In his heyday, Clark had good straightaway power from either side of the plate and produced enough hard liners to hit for a respectable average as well, despite his frequent strikeouts. His bat generated just 16 extra-base hits in 2002, and just four after the All-Star break. He doesn't move well on the bases or in the field, but has decent hands and an adequate arm. 2003 Outlook Clark became a free agent over the winter and may have a hard time finding another opportunity. He has hit only four homers in his last 397 at-bats, so it's very much an open question whether he'll ever get his power stroke back, or even get the chance to. |
