- Chicago, July 19 (Bloomberg) -- Pro football hall of famer Dick Butkus was hired to coach Chicago's XFL franchise, becoming the first coach named by the World Wrestling Federation Entertainment Inc.'s league.

After playing middle linebacker for the National Football League's Chicago Bears from 1965 to 1973, Butkus was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1979.

Butkus, who has no coaching experience, joins a league that says it wants to be more fan-friendly than the NFL and have more exciting, old-fashioned rules, which have not yet been revealed. The XFL is jointly owned by World Wrestling Federation and General Electric Co.-owned NBC.

``The XFL is going to be an extremely competitive league. This is a unique challenge which I'm approaching with the same amount of energy that I had during my playing days,'' Butkus said.

Butkus, 57, appeared in eight straight Pro Bowl games over a nine-year career with the Bears, who selected him in the first round of the 1965 NFL draft out of the University of Illinois. The college football honor for top linebacker, the Butkus Award, is named after him.

The eight-team XFL is scheduled to begin its season in February with each team playing 10 regular-season games. So far the XFL said it has placed teams in Chicago; San Jose, California; Orlando, Florida; Memphis, Tennessee; Los Angeles; and Las Vegas.

The Chicago franchise is scheduled to play its five home games at Soldier Field.
