Some call it the very hallmark of WAW: The masked ref. Why do WAW referees where a black hooded mask? Because WAW isn't exactly a safe place to work. Emotions run wild and tempers reach boiling point. After too many incidents of backstage fights between referees and wrestlers, the referees all decided to mask themselves so wrestlers wouldn't know who's who. Now it's become a symbol of WAW and has actually been written into the dress code for all wrestling officials.
