The Charge of the Goddess
The Charge of the Goddess

The Charge of the Goddess is attributed to Doreen Valiente, a student of Gerarld Gardner. The poem, originally found in the Gardnerian Book of Shadows, is now loved by all witches as a statement of our reverence for the Goddess and Nature.

Listen to the words of the Great Mother, who of old was called Artemis, Astarte, Dione, Melusine, Aphrodite, Cerridwen, Diana, Arienrhod, Brigid, and by many other names:

Whenever you have need of anything, once in the month, and better it be when the moon is full, you shall assemble in some secret place and adore the spirit of Me who is Queen of all Witches.

Prosperity & Money Spells
Prosperity Spell
You need:


some money or pictures of cash, checks and jewels to be placed on the altar
drums for raising energy

Put the money on the altar, not as an object to worship but as a symbol to your deep mind of what you want to obtain. You may wish to place a goddess statue or another religious symbol behind the sympbolic wealth, as a reminder that money is not after the ultimate value. Then, stand up, and drum and chant to raise power. Your chant can be something like:
Wealth , wealth , come to me,
I deserve prosperity.


As the power moves towerd its peak , imagine a huge transparent funnel over you, and huge amounts of cash, checks and other forms of wealth cascading down though it to pile up around you (or , at least , enough for your needs + some to donate to worthy causes).
Give thanks for the wealth which you know will be headed your way. Open the circle.

Afterwards, go seek a job if you dont have one or ask for a raise, and always give money to charities. Soon prosperity will come to you.

Simple Money Spell
Items needed
- green candle with rune symbol of money and prosparity etched in the side (see amulets page for pictures of the prosperity rune)
- cinnamon oil
- objects that represent money (jewelry, coins, dollar bills, etc.)

Annoint the candle with the oil, and place in candle holder. Place the items that represent money in a circle around the candle.
Light the candle and visualize a green mist or light coming from the flame. In the mist or light visualize silver coins floating around.
Now use your hands and grab as many coins as possible. Finally, chant the following:


Rich I'll be, money and prosparity come hither to me.


Let the candle burn out.

A Wish Spell
(Editor's Note: Although this is not specifically a money spell, it is often used as such.)


On the night of the new moon, write your wish on a clean piece of paper. Light a white candle and turn off all lights. Think about the fulfillment of your wish for several minutes then say:

love and light grant my wish

Then think about your wish as you burn the paper in the votive candle. Repeat this ritual at the same time on 12 conecutive nights. If you miss a night begin spell from day one.

Guidelines for a Magickal Life

These guidelines are from my own Book of Shadows. They incorporate ideas from Wicca as well as other traditions, but I do not think of them in terms of those traditions. For me, they are a mirror to which I can hold my actions, the reflection of which will tell me if I am being true to my path. They are not written in stone, and they sometimes change when I discover something new about life on Earth. It's a beginning.

It is not sufficient to say you are a "witch" or to practice magick. You must also live as a witch.

Do not look for excuses for why you cannot follow the path. Accept responsibility for your failures as well as your successes.

Celebrate the phases of the Moon and the changing of seasons. Do so not because it is part of a ritual calendar, but rather because these acts keep you in tune with Nature and Spirit.

Honor Spirit or the Goddess, but recognize that the spirits of all entities in the Universe are equal.

All life is sacred; all acts are ritual. Your actions should reflect your own divinity and that of all beings.

Achieving balance with the Earth is essential for a magickal life.

Responsibility toward the environment and the Earth's inhabitants should be evident in the activities of your daily life.

Do not take more from the Earth than you need to live. We are mere visitors here; the Earth is eternal.

Wealth and fame are not necessary ingredients for a magickal life.

Know that the joy of life is a gift. Know it as a cat knows it, in his bones and blood.

Power is a sacred gift and must be used wisely and with humility. Pride in ones power will ultimately cause failure.

Power should never be used to prove your ability or in any form of competition with others.

Power should be used to create happiness, not sorrow.

Be certain of your intentions when performing any act of magick. Magick is neither good nor evil, positive nor negative. The intentions of the magician determine the path it will take.

Act always with honor and accept responsibility for your actions. It is honorable to protect your loved ones, but be willing to accept the consequences of your actions with honor as well.

Words are sacred, use them wisely.

There is honor in truth.

Your word is sacred. Others must know that they can depend on you absolutely.

Learn to forgive yourself and others.

Knowledge is the foundation of the Craft. Never believe that you know enough.

Teach those who truly wish to learn, but take care that you do not teach those who only wish to serve themselves or harm others.

Teach the Craft with pride, but not to enhance your own pride.

Recognize that even the least knowledgeable of students may offer you lessons you need.

Live your life in a way that is above reproach to the rest of the world. In doing so, you will bring honor to all witches.

Do not be drawn into the feelings of hate and anger expressed by others.

Be able to look into a mirror and be truly unafraid.

Divination Spells
Water Scrying Spell
This spell can be used to neutralize the power of those who intend to hurt your reputation, in any way pose a threat to your security, or who want to do you physical harm.

This is a method that we got from our grandparents, that really works.

Take a clear glass and fill with clean water. Set it on a dresser in front of a mirror, on top of a Bible. Then take a Lighted Kerosene lamp and put it between the water and the mirror. Make the glass of water high enough where the flame can be seen through the water. Sit with your back to the water, and with a small mirror look over your left shoulder at the reflection of the glass of water in the hand mirror. Sit and be still and very quiet for a few minutes and you will start to see images in the glass in the reflection.

I know that this works. I myself saw my future wife. And when I met her I knew I had seen her.I just thought that I would pass this on . It could be of some use to someone.

Divination Spell
Best Time: Waxing Moon

Fill a cauldron half-full of water and place it on a table where you can see comfortably into it while seated. Light 2 purple candles and a good divination incense; a combination of mugwort and wormwood work well. Arrange the candles so their light does not shine into the water in your eyes. Focus your attention on the bottom of the cauldron, your hands placed lightly on either side. Breathe gently into the water and say:



Cauldron, reveal to me that which I seek
Great Mother, open my inner eye that I may truly see.

Empty your mind as much as possible; remian relaxed while looking deep into the cauldron waters. The answer may come in images in the water, pictures in your mind and strong bursts of "knowing".

Dream Spells
Dream Protection Spell
This is something I wrote when someone put a spell on me to use my own thoughts against me. This spell reversed that one! (author)

Tools:

1 tablespoon of lemon juice (or another fruit juice)
1 tablespoon of sea salt
1 teaspoon of vegetable oil
1 light weight cauldron (a glass bowl works too)
1 piece of paper
1 black pen
2 black or red candles (1 of each works best)
Mix the lemon juice, sea salt, and oil into your cauldron. Place the cauldron in front of you on the floor. Sit comfortably and place the candles beside the cauldron (red on left, black on right.) Rip the piece of paper in half then set it aside.

Light both candles, left one first. Now close your eyes and visualize a sphere. In the middle of the sphere, visualize yourself stuck inside, trying to get out. See the black and red candles burning around you. Watch as the candles spin around you, getting faster each time they pass. Then see yourself magically being released. On one piece of paper, draw a picture of what you saw. On the other, write down your biggest fear. Light both pieces of paper on fire, using the black for the written half, red for the drawing. Then throw them into your cauldron. Take the cauldron outside and pour it (paper and all) into a hole in the ground. Cover the hole with dirt. The spell is done.

To Have Dreams Of The Deceased
You will need:

1 white candle
A picture of the deceased
A pentagram
Light the white candle and stare at the flame for a few minutes. Then put the picture at eye level and say:

You are gone forever;
But through this spell,
My dreams to which
you will come.
Place the picture under your pillow. Let the candle burn to a stub, blow it out, and place it under your pillow also. Sleep with them under your pillow for three nights to recieve the dream you want.

Nightmare Spell
I was plagued by the same bad dream night after night for over a month and I decided to do something about it. This spell was given to me by a fellow witch's grandmother (who is also a witch) and I elaborated on it. (author)

Items required:

scarf (white or cream colors work best)
4 cloves
pinch of basil
pinch of ground sage
lavender or vanilla oil (whatever you find more soothing)
black marker
white ribbon


Lay the scarf out. You will be putting spices into it. Place the spices (ground sage, 4 cloves, basil) into the scarf and add 2 drops of oil. Gather the scarf at the top (like a moneybag) and tie it with the ribbon. On the outside of the scarf draw the nightmare that plagues you (e.g. spiders, falling).


Place the scarf under your pillow and sleep with it there.


This cured me of my nightmares. I hope it works for others.

Other Spells
Three Times Three Spell
To have someone see his errors

This is a three times three spell to use on people who were corrupt in their ways. It has no negative consequence unless you think ill of the person while casting the spell.

Wind in the north, run through the trees
Three times three, let them see, let them see
Sands of the east, rich soils beneath
Three times three, set them free, set them free
Fires in the south, awaken from sleep
Three times three, let them see, let them see
Water of the west, flow to the seas
Three times three, set them free, set them free
It works best if you have something representing that person, like a strand of their hair or a fingernail. The spell may not work instantaneously, you may have to repeat it for the person to see error in their ways. Please be sure you're not being hypocritical, because that may cause negative feedback.. So, all warnings given, blessed be!

Birthday Ritual
With my birthday right around the corner, I am once again planning my birthday ritual for this year. It's a lot of fun and really helps to put a focus on the next year of your life. It's a very personalized ritual. I hope that it does as well for you over the years as it has for me. Blessed Be - Oshun


THE BIRTHDAY RITUAL
To begin with you must choose something as a "marker" for the Pentagram. This should be something small and plentiful--every year you will add one more. I use peridots for my markers, but other items such as sea pearls, pebbles from the beach work well. You should keep in mind that this needs to be something that will stand the test of time. Plant products, such as resin (frankincense or myrrh), berries or seeds, are not a good choice.

You will also need 6 candles, one for each point of the pentagram. The pentagram is said to represent the human form; the top point is your head, the side points your arms and the bottom points your feet. In this ritual, the pentagram represents you. A candle is placed at each point and in the middle. The colour of the candle and how you bless it will depend on your wish (petition) for each point. The center candle is a general wish for the upcoming year. The top point represents what you wish to receive spiritually this year. The right side point of the pentagram (keep in mind that this will be to your left--the pentagram's right as it faces you) represents what you wish to receive this year on a material level and the left side point represents what you pledge to give this year on a material level. The right bottom point represents where you wish your path to lead and the left bottom point represents what you pledge to leave behind you as you go.


PERSONALIZING YOUR RITUAL: Take the time to plan each wish and each candle carefully. For each individual candle, I choose a specific God/Goddess and select 3 herbs, an oil, and a very small crystal appropriate to that particular God/Goddess as well as a petition to say for each one. By use tea light candles for this ritual, the candles can be popped out of their foil container and a pinch of each herb plus the crystal are placed beneath in the foil, the candle is anointed with oil and then returned to the foil. When done this way, the flame gives an extra burst of energy right before it goes out. This part can be personalized however you choose to express your wishes. The type of candle you use and what elements you wish to use for each point is entirely up to you.


SETTING UP: Use your markers to form the outline of the pentagram--how many you will have depends on how old you are. When determining how many you need, keep in mind that you are asking for the year ahead. For example, on your 32nd birthday, you will be making wishes for the 33rd year of your life; therefore you will need to use 33 markers. Set the markers out with the top point facing north, left is to the east and right is to the west in invoking direct--start at top to right bottom point to left side point to right side point to left bottom point and then back to top. Once you have laid out the markers, place you candles, petitions, offerings at the points.


THE RITUAL: To be performed solitary! Cleanse yourself and your area; call the directions; cast your circle; call upon the God/Goddess for their blessings in your own preferred fashion. Light the candles, staring with the center candle, then the top (be careful not to get burnt by the center candle, watch the robe sleeve), the right side, the left side, the right bottom and the left bottom. As you light each candle, state your petition (wish). Allow candle to burn completely (Candles should burn entirely on your birthday so make sure to start early and use smaller candles--not for 7 day candles). Close the ritual and allow the candles to remain burning. Once the candles have burnt out, retain the markers for next year and toss the crystals into a river.

On your birthday, light a white candle and chant this birthday spell.

This candle burns for birthday blessings
In golden light good luck finds spark
By candle flame my fortune rises
Enrich my life with friendship's mark

Give pleasure by both day and night

When finished, extinguish the flame by blowing out the candle and pinching
the wick. This will attract generous gifts, not only on your birthday but
throughout the next year

Spell Binder
This is best used at the end of a spoken or written spell. I find that this adds a certain "Ooomph" to the releasing of energy. It also works best if you are wearing a Pentagram you have attuned to yourself.
Speak these word with all the fibres of your body while releasing the spell's energy:

Chant for Good Grades
This is a spell to help you do well on tests. You still have to listen to what the teachers say and do your homework, but this should help you from making careless mistakes. Don't expect the god/dess to do all the work for you!
You can draw a pentacle one your paper if you want, but you don't have to. Throughout the day before taking the test say the following:


On this test I take today
I will receive no less than "A".
Earth, Wind, Fire and Sea
As I say so mote it be!

Now take the test and you can even say it a few times while taking the test. Say it in your head so others won't be disturbed.

Happiness/Comfort Spell
You need
Jasmine oil
Freshly picked flower (any kind will do)
Paper + Pen
Candle
Container


Write down on a piece of paper who or what makes you sad or angry and burn the paper saying: "I burn this paper to bring me happiness."


Then drip the jasmine oil on the flowers and burn the flowers saying: "I burn these flowers to bring me comfort." Pour the ashes into the container while saying: "Akasha (the goddess), bring me happiness and bring me comfort." Repeat it three times then put the container somewhere cool. (i.e. fridge).

Spell for Bullies
This is used to stop people who are bullying or upsetting you and hopefully to make them friends.
You will need:
1 Glass bowl full with water.
1 pinch of sugar
Blossom petals (any color will do)
4 drops of olive oil


Instructions:

Chant the following spell 4 times. Every time you say the spell add 1 of the 4 drops to your bowl of water. Put the blossoms in the water but so they float on the surface of the water. Then put the pinch of sugar in. After you've done the spell, put the blossoms that were in your water in a circle and pour the solution (water) over the flowers.

Protection Charm
Tools:
One red candle + one white candle
A small piece of white paper
Oil
Ink pen
Red Ribbon

Set the white candle alight on the left to represent the Goddess and a red candle to the right to represent the God. Place the materials for the spell between the two candles.

Using the oil, with your right index finger, draw a pentacle (star inside a circle) in the middle of the white paper, while saying, "With the seal of this pentagram I request that this charm be used for protection." [Editor's note: a pentagram seal may also be used.]

Using a pen, in the center of the oil-drawn pentagram, draw your own special symbol for protection.
Say, "With this rune, I request that this charm be used for protection."

When you are ready, roll the paper up with the red ribbon tightly lengthwise.

Hold the charm over the red candle and say,
I consecrate myself in fire
so that I can defend myself
and protect myself with the power I have.

Continue doing this with the smoke of the white candle, but consecrate it in the name of air.

Hold the charm with both hands. Concentrate on the charm's task. Then seal the left end of the charm with white wax, the right with red wax. The charm is now complete.

How to make the oil yourself:
1 T base oil
4 drops primrose
4 drops lavender
2 drops sandalwood

Of course, you can always use whatever you feel will do the job.

Protection Charm #2
Fill a clear glass goblet about halfway up with water. Stir in a little salt and put it in direct sun for approximately 15 minutes. Let the water absorb the rays. Along side the goblet, place a charm or talisman on a chain or cord and allow it to receive the sun as well. (Note: You may use a piece of jewelry such as a gemstone pendant or a stone you've found or any other natural object for the charm.)

After 15 minutes have passed, take the glass and talisman out of the sun and dip the talisman into the water. Using the chain or the string attached to the talisman, gently swirl it clockwise while you say the following three times.

Apollo's light surround me.

Poseidon's water protect me.

Athena's wisdom guide me.


As you speak the words, imagine a beam of pure white light surrounding both the water and the talisman.

Leave the water with the talisman in it for another 10 minutes, then dry it off and wear it with comfort in knowing that it will protect you.

Pet Protection
I used these spells in a protection ritual for a house and its inhabitants, including the pets. In both spells, Hecate is called upon for her fierce protective attributes. I've explained the circumstances in each case, but you would want to make changes to fit the circumstances and characteristics of your pets.

To protect a dog:
The dog I wanted to protect is a beautiful, loving pet. He is also a pitbull and very protective of his family. My fear has always been that he would protect them from intruders or other harm and later be harmed himself because of the fear many people have of the breed.
Call your dog into the circle and draw a pentagram in Protection Oil on his forehead. Then recite:

Hecate, Dark Mother
In protecting this home
In your place as is right
Stands one of your own

In defending this house
And all creatures within
Your sacred beast
Is your true loyal friend.

Keep him from harm
As he guards all he loves
And watch over him
So below, as above.

To protect a cat
The cat in this case was a house cat who had just moved into a new house. He kept running away every time a door or window was opened.
Call your cat into the circle and draw a pentagram in Protection Oil on his forehead. Then recite:

Moon Goddess, I ask
That you keep [name] at home
And safe from his mischief
And desire to roam.

Give him the contentment
Known to his race
And see that he's happy
In this his new place.

The Bottle Spell
(variation of the traditional witch's bottle)
This spell can be used to neutralize the power of those who intend to hurt your reputation, in any way pose a threat to your security, or who want to do you physical harm.

Tools:
black thread
black ink or black ballpoint pin
parchment paper
1 bottle with a cork or mortar and pestle
1 white candle
4 tablespoons orris-root (or oak moss)
4 tablespoons sea salt
4 tablespoons black powdered iron (available at
pottery shops where ironstone is made)
4 tablespoons frankincense or myrrh

Mix the sea salt, orris-root powder, and iron in a bowl. Then cut a peice of parchment to fit inside your bottle and write on it in black ink:

I neutralize the power of [name of your adversary] to do me any harm.
I ask that this be correct and for the good of all. So mote it be.

Roll up the parchment, tie it with black thread to bind it, and place it in the bottle. Fill the bottle with the dry ingedients. Then take the white candle and, while turning the bottle counterclockwise, drip drip wax over the cok to seal it. Last, secretly bury the bottle in a place where it will not be disturbed and no animal or person will dig it up. It should never be opened or the power of the spell is lost.
