Virtual Hogwarts > The Valentine's Masquerade Ball > Not another Valentine's Ball

Sariss's satin slippers made shuffling noises as she hurried along the dungeon corridors and up into the Entrance Hall where the doors to the Great Hall were, wide open, admitting a steady influx of students. The ball was starting to get busy. So Sariss's timing wasn't all that bad--even though she was a little bit late. She only hoped that Seb wasn't mad at her for making him wait so long...

Speaking of Seb... Where was he? And more importantly... what did he look like at all? Sariss didn't know as the greater part of their most recent conversation had taken place with a closed door between them as Sariss was making herself pretty--which she didn't have much practice at. So it took a rather long time. Well, she was used to just braiding her hair and be done with it. At the most, she'd roll that braid into a bun. But that was it. For the ball though, she wanted to look pretty. And that had made her spend a looooong time on her decidedly deliberately uncooperative hair.

Eventually, Seb had gone to the ball to wait for her there, and when she had either thought it was enough--or given up--had donned on her mask and shuffled out of the girls' dormitories, blushing a little and feeling embarrassed at her own sudden bout of vanity.

So it was that she now stood there, in the doorway to the Great Hall, stood on tiptoes and tried to catch a glimpse of a masked boy who could be Seb. There were a few little boys, dancing rather closely with some flat-chested first-years. Sariss giggled. So silly. If they thought that this would make them seem mature, they were very much mistaken really. And there was a little girl sitting in an even littler boy's lap and... oy... That was disgusting! Where was Professor Giordano and her bag of detentions when you needed them?

Sariss averted her eyes. Yuck.

Oh... that one could be Seb... Sariss squinted. And she tried to get to him through the crowd--which wasn't exactly a very easy task. "Seb!" she called out, but had a feeling that he'd not hear her over all the noise. There was almost no getting through the throng of students! Sariss found herself being shoved around and into a totally different direction. Mutter grumble.

Seb sat in the corner of the Great Hall inpatiently watching and waiting for Sariss. Boy, did he wonder why females always had to be late all the time. That was one thing he'd never know. ... Unless he asked.... Though he had a feeling he wouldn't get a decent answer. Tugging on his ("God damn") mask, the boy went back to watching the dancing couples.

"This dress took me all of four minutes to chose, do you like it?" He mimicked as his eyes rested on one couple who were talking as they danced. "Yes, I can tell it took four minutes." Seb replied to himself as the 'male' "Oh sweetie it looks like it once held dragon dung!" He paused while another couple walked passed then continued to 'speak' for the girl, "Oh all these compliments, you're making me blush a shade of orange! Oh.. no thats my make up! Te.. hee.. hee."

The boy itched to take off his mask. He was beginning to sweat under it and it was beginning to irritate him. Balls where stupid. On the brighter side though (and to Seb, this was always a brighter side to anything) they were serving food. All he needed now Sariss.. and he could finally drag her to the food.

Oh bless whoever had made that song end so that everyone had to stop dancing for a few moments. Poor Sariss had been shoved... she looked around... yes, she had been shoved back to the entrance. How typical. But on the bright side... Nobody was dancing anymore, so she could finally see something and even recognised some of the masked people by their stature and the way that they moved. Sariss was after all a quite observant ickle. You just recognised your friends even if they wore masks.

This boy could really be Seb. He wasn't dancing with another girl. He didn't have a first-year in his lap. He looked like he was waiting for someone... well... for as much as someone could like anything when they wore a mask and you couldn't really tell the expression on their face...

Sariss shuffled a little bit closer. Floppy hair... a slightly annoyed twitch at the corner of his mouth... Was he annoyed at Sariss being late or the mask---since Sariss had to admit that she found it rather uncomfortable. It was fairly hot and made her sweat.

"Seb?" Yes, definitely him. "I'm so glad I found you! I believe that I must have been shoved all over the place and back to the start. You look... mysterious." Sariss smiled at the boy.

"Seb?" The boys gaze was drawn from the dancing kids to the person beside him. "I'm so glad I found you! I believe that I must have been shoved all over the place and back to the start." Naturally it was Sariss. No one else would go out of their way to find him. "You look... mysterious." she then added.

He blinked at her for a moment. "Mysterious? No. Stupid? Yes." Seb looked down at his colourless robes and absent mindedly touched his mask of the same shade. Now here was where the boy had trouble. How to compliment Sariss. If he mentioned that "it took three hours for that?" it would sound bad. It Seb mentioned she looked super pretty with all that work, he'd get a swift spell up the... nose and a 'was I not pretty before?!'. Last Christmas when he was home his parents were going to a Yule Ball and he couldn't help but cruelly cackle at his fathers misfortune when he said the wrong words.

Taking a deep breath, he began. "You look simply adorable as usual, Sariss. Not to say I can't notice any difference from other times.. or, or to say you look no different and the hours you spent on yourself pe.r...um.." The boy paused before muttering, "Damn genes. ... you're pretty."

A feeble 'forgive me?' smile was added for effect.

Much rambling courtesy of Seb about how Sariss was 'adorable as usual' but that that was 'not to say that there wasn't a difference' and more whispered stammering about his genes, was followed by a not quite as eloquent 'you're pretty' and a apologetic smile that no one would be able to resist. How could anyone even get mad at Seb when those adorable dimples appeared on his face?

The expressions on Sariss' face went through everything from slightly confused to annoyed (for a split second only though) to amused and just... sigh. Well, nobody ever said that she had to love Seb because of his skills at making compliments...

Besides, if a compliment was delivered in such an adorably clumsy manner, you could be sure that the male in question didn't call every other girl on the planet 'love' or 'darling'--just to not have to remember the name of the one that was currently the object of his compliments.

"I can live with 'pretty' for as long as it comes from you," Sariss said, smiling, and bent down to kiss the tip of Seb's nose. He had not stood up when Sariss had arrived, which the girl found somewhat amusing for a reason that she could not quite tell.

"I'm sorry for being so late. Have you had to wait very long? I hope you haven't been all that bored. Have I missed anything interesting while I was busy..." Messing with my hair to no avail at all and therefore have to make it seem like I deliberately left it unfastened? "...fixing myself up a little?" Great. Now it was apparently Sariss' turn to ramble.

Seb smiled and stood up, offering his hand out to Sariss. "Well, when in Rome...." He trailed off and hinted to where odd couples were dancing. There was somthing about the school having the same kind of ball each year which had grew tiresome for Seb.. though it had been a while since he had attended one properly. Well! The boy had problems. ...

"So," the boy spoke, "I saw a certain Professor wander off with another certain professor earlier, if you catch my drift?" A little cackled escaped his lips as they began to dance. "I'm sure they'd say they were going to patrol but I know better."

He scanned the Hall looking for familiar faces or masks at least. Oh how he itched to take his off. Up to now there wasn't really anyone he recognised... well, no one that mattered anyway. His thoughts drifted back to when they were in their early years and they attended the ball and how things had changed. Oh, how they had changed. People too had changed... Grew up before each others eyes without realising.

"Love is in the air…" Sariss sang, grinning, as Seb told her about the two professors. She was a bit off key and blamed it on the music that was playing. It was hard to sing a melody when listening to a completely different one. Not to mention that she had to watch her steps while dancing. She didn't want to smoosh Seb's poor feet, after all.

"You know, during my odyssey across the room I actually—" Sariss broke off, a somewhat disgusted expression appearing on her masked face. Hence her expression was not as visible to the surrounding dancers as it would have been otherwise. But the surrounding dancers were just it. Well, one particular pair of them that was less dancing than snogging.

"Oh my goodness…" It was a rather passionate case of liplocking. And judging from the statures and height of the involved boy and girl, they couldn't be more than first-years. Actually, Sariss was positive that one of them was a first-year Slytherin. Nuff said.

It was rather icky to look at. Sariss inadvertently wondered whether it looked just as tasteless and desperate when Seb and Sariss were kissing. And more importantly, had they been like that in their first year? No… no, they hadn't been together in first year yet. Besides… they had come to Hogwarts late and had been some two years older anyway. When Sariss thought back to the time before she had come to Hogwarts, she could never have imagined that little boys and girls at the Muggle school that she had attended back then would be going at it so badly already.

She shook her head, shuddering, and looked in the other direction where a bunch of people stood that she might—if it was not for their masks—have identified as a bunch of especially fun-loving Hufflepuffs, a few of which she knew. And there… among all the pink bubbles with faeries in them was a bubble that had a particularly angry fairy in it. That bubble was green… which was probably the source of the fairy's rage. Sariss giggled.
