| Virtual Hogwarts > The Herbology Greenhouses > Studying for the *wibble* NEWTs |
| Posted by: Sariss Ravon Jan 7 2006, 11:08 PM |
| Sariss had one hell of a déjà-vu
when she entered the greenhouses that day and was told to study. If she
had known that this wouldn't be another proper lesson, she'd have
postponed one of her book reports till that lesson, just to keep herself
busy. Study... Blech, she'd been doing that same thing for days now.
Potions, Herbology, Arithmancy, Ancient Runes. Rinse and repeat. An actual
lesson tended to break the NEWT-revisions monotony nicely. The girl was already bored before she opened a random Herbology book that she had extracted from her book bag, past the sniffling nose of a small hedgehog with whom she had spoken nose to nose, from hedgehog to hedgehog, only a few days ago, thanks to a spiffy potion that Professor Giordano had taught them. "Hop on, Thorny," Sariss had her hand stretched out, ready to scoop up her little pet. The hedgehog clumsily scampered into her palm and sniffed as though it wanted to say 'I'm ready, ma'am! Lift me up.' The greenhouses looked so empty still. Only barely a handful of students was there. Where were all of them? Had so many dropped Herbology? Had so many not even passed their OWLs in the first place? Where had all of the people gone with whom Sariss had sat on these benches? Woah, was she getting nostalgic or what? Yes, she probably was. After all, she would never ever set foot inside the greenhouses again because she would graduate very soon. It seemed impossible that the NEWTs should have crept up on her so quickly. What with all the studying for the NEWTs, she had almost forgotten the time and the consequences. How could one concentrate on one's studies when one had just realised the extent of what graduation from Hogwarts meant? Sure, Sariss had been babbling about how she was going to be an Auror all year long, but still... saying it an realisting how soon exactly it would be... those were two different things. She signed and glanced at the Herbology book that she had very suitably opened on a chapter about Forget-Me-Nots & their Magical Properties. "Think that's a hint, Thorny?" |

| Lockore Darkmoon was rubbing
his temples as he made his way down from the castle to the Herbology
Greenhouses. The work load was getting rather intense, and he was still
getting caught up from when he was gone. Thankfully that was almost over
though, now he just had to get through his NEWTs and he’d be all set. He
couldn’t help but wish that he’d been around this time last term to offer
his support to the upper class, to one of them at least. Lockore paused just outside the door to the greenhouse, running through a mental checklist of just what it was that he wanted to review while he was here. Though he knew it was all there in his head, he felt a little hands-on practice couldn’t hurt. When he opened the door and stepped through, Lockore noticed that he wasn’t the only one to have the idea; it seemed that Sariss was already there and more than likely for the same reason that he was. “Hello Sariss.” Lockore said, smiling at her while he passed by. Considering that she was usually quite studious by nature, Lockore figured that she really wasn’t there for idle talking, nor was he. With his bag slung over his shoulder, Lockore made his way to another part of the greenhouse, ready to review some of the various potions that could be used to alter the flaura. He wasn’t sure if it would be on the exam, but as there was a class on it, Lockore felt it was a strong possibility. That being the case, he settled down, and was soon lost in the world of Plant Genetics and How to Change Them to Suit Your Needs. While it wasn’t the most thrilling book he’d ever read, he had to admit that the author certainly knew what she was talking about. |

| Rayya scurried over, late.
"Sorry I'm late. Don't tell me this is only a revision lesson," she said
by way of saying hello to both Lockore and Sariss. From the look of things it really was only a revision lesson and she sighed. Revising for exams was so deadly boring! It made her brain hurt and that was something she didn't really like at all! Another sigh accompanied her as she sat down on the bench and pulled out a large stack of notes - not all for herbology. Looking guilty, she scanned the notes dealing with ancient runes. "You don't think Prof L will mind if I use this time to study runes, do you? It's just I've had about all I can handle of plants. Those three books we had to review were huge!" She blushed and ducked her head, intent on her Runes notes though she kept some herbology ones nearby in case she needed to make a quick switch. |

| "Hi," Sariss said when Lockore
entered the greenhouses as well. He seemed a little more enthusiastic
about this being a revision session than the Slytherin was. Rayya who
arrived shortly afterwards seemed to share Sariss' sentiments though.
"Yes, unfortunately," Sariss replied with a sigh and a grimace. Her tone of voice and the expression on her face could leave no doubt to Rayya that the Slytherin was less than enthusiastic about having to spend time in the greenhouses when she could be doing something more NEWT-relevant... something that required more extensive studies like... yes, it was as though Rayya had read Sariss' mind. "Oh don't tell me," she whispered in response. "And so boring! I really expected more from a book about poisonous plants. I can recommend The Contemporary Herbologist though. It's about the most inconspicuous title you can imagine, but it's a remarkably good read." Even more softly she added, "Almost made me like this subject." Sariss craned her head to see Rayya's Runes things. "How's your NEWT project coming along? I don't think I have ever read so many books in such a short time. It was even worse than the books reports." |

| "I found the exam book one,
quite useful. Good tips, like spending your time wisely," Rayya replied
and then she grinned, "If he does complain, I'll just say I was putting
what I had learned into practise." Looking down at her runes, she sighed. "Going about as well as I can expect. Design was never anything I was good with. But I think I am almost done with it. How about you?" A quick scribble of her quill crossed out an unstuitable word and she sighed again, frowning. "I have a terrible feeling that whoever tests me on this will get a horrible reading. I don't think I've put enough good runes in." |

| "I don't know about the
design..." Sariss said. "I'm sort of done with my project, but I swear
that some of my runes look horribly familiar... I hope I haven't
accidentally created some shapes that already exist elsewhere... Somehow
they all start to look alike after a couple of hours of staring at
them." And all in all, Sariss thought that the explanations, meanings and details that she had created for her set of runes were pathetic and silly too, but she didn't say it. She just didn't feel that her project was a very clever thing. "At least I've finished it," she shrugged and added with a laugh. "That's probably more than Prewfish--I mean, Prewett--more than Prewett expected from us." She quickly turned a page in her Herbology book; it was an alibi action only. "My runes all have weird meanings." Sariss had her share of good runes and bad runes, but it was all weird to her. Actually, everything that had the slightest bit to do with Divination, no matter whether it was rune-casting or calculating some numbers that you'd derive your relationship troubles from, recently seemed weird to her. This Slytherin didn't believe in anything like that, obviously. She liked things that she could poke her wand at and not some invisible theoretical non-sense. "When I did the assignment, I think I ate too much of those delicious chocolate-honey-coated almonds that the house elves make so well," she added with a grimace and a giggle--and then quickly turned the page in her Herbology book again. Nobody was as good at faking busy-ness as Sariss was. No one. Nyah. |

| "I think I didn't sleep enough
when I started mine. I'm sure they all looked good from a sleep deprived
point of view, but now I'm not so sure," Rayya said. "My wise idea to name
them all after Mayan gods seemed a good idea. Only now I find I can't say
half the names and that will go down real well in the exam, I'm
sure." She trailed off and looked over her work. "You don't think it'll matter too much if I change the names?" |
