Virtual Hogwarts > Slytherin House > Returning...

Clump! Dust flew up from the ground as the trunk containing all his godly belongings… and sweets… was dropped to the floor. A few heads looked around to the new tired looking sight by the door, but didn’t want to seem too interested, so they went back to their books or whatever they happened to be doing. Although, he thought, they would surely be catching a peek when they assumed he wasn’t looking. Bending down, the trunk was pulled to the side away from the entrance. As funny as it sounded, the boy didn’t want anyone to walk in and trip over. Not yet anyway. As he stood alone by the door, he looked around, realizing that nothing had changed at all apart from a few new faces, more cracks in the wall and what looked like newer upholstery. He could easily fall back into the ways of the school, or so he hoped, he really hoped. Emerging from his left, some of the students he remembered from what seemed like ages ago walked past him to leave the common room, glancing at his cape and his trunk, and little to his surprise his face. Doing as so many people would; trying to picture where they had seen the boy from. Only, he wasn’t bothered about that, no, not yet. There were friends he had to bother about. Professors.. And of course…

Yes. Seb hadn’t told Sariss in his last letter he would be returning. That worried the boy the most. She had no time to come up with reasons or excuses for why she had a mysterious male with her, or so he imagined all through the journey back. A girl like Sariss should never be alone for too long a time. She was too good for that. With a sigh, he was almost glad she wasn’t in the common room. Although he couldn’t see some parts of it which were covered with a slight darkness but if she was there she surely would’ve jumped up by now. The boy was suddenly feeling uncertain. Where was he to go? Yes. He knew where the boys dorms where at, however.. which ones were for his year? How many of his friends there would greet him? Which was his bed… And most of all, which would be his bed? Sleeping was too important. With a deep breath, Seb moved away from the entrance and towards the centre of the common room, and in the direction of the dorms; trunk loudly dragged behind him.

Naturally, as expected, papers suddenly came to life as they were being lowered or moved to one side so their owners could get a better look of the boy, the boy with dust all over the bottom of his cape, windswept hair and a nuisance of a trunk.

Sariss was sprawled out on her bed, books strewn here and there, notes stacking to her left and right—and if one looked closely even below and above her! One of the scrolls was definitely wrapped around her arm. How it had managed to do that would forever be a mystery to mankind. The quite logical explanation for all of this? The end-of-year exams were drawing near and our young lady had vowed to study really hard so as to earn large amounts of house points for exceptionally outstanding results.

Eventually, she decided that it was enough for that day. She sure had the theory of Switching Spells down to a T. And Egyptian mythology and writing was practically burnt into her brain. DADA… well… she was getting there. And History of Magic had been so interesting that she’d only have to memorise a lot of names and dates. The big picture… that one she already knew from the lessons. Astronomy… well… That one would come last. What could be so dreadfully difficult about Astronomy… It was a lot of facts. Shrug.

Sariss tried to unravel herself from the tangles of the blanket and the scrolls that cracked ominously when she moved—and she practically sailed out of bed to land in a heap on the floor, notes fluttering around her. How she had managed to take the entire blanket with her when she’d wriggled her leg out of bed was another one of those mysteries that would never be solved. She cursed rather colourfully (how good that nobody else was there to hear) and quickly gathered up the entire mess. After heaving it all into her trunk she scampered out of the dorm. A duel or two would be a good way to end the day!

In the common room, the usual sight greeted her. Some students were revising, others were just simply reading, some were playing games… and one was heading right towards her in direction of the dorms.

Sariss’s jaw dropped and she had to blink several times. “Seb?” she whispered. “Sebbie!” She dashed towards him, braid flying wildly behind her. Sariss skittered to a halt a few inches before she’d have run him over. She was a bit unsure of what to do now. After all, she hadn’t got a letter in weeks (and hadn’t written one either, for that matter). But after a few moments of hesitation, she jumped up, and her arms flew around Seb’s shoulders. The boy had clearly grown! “Sebbie Sebbie Sebbie! You’re back!”

Head down, he continued to walk towards the dorms when his nickname was called by a familiar voice. And only one person really called him Sebbie. Looking up, Seb saw Sariss rushing towards him, her braid flying out behind her. The boy took a deep breath and bit the inside of his lower lip then let go of his trunk, which made another loud bang echo around the common room. By now the other students in the room were openly nosy, rather than hide behind their school work. Sariss skidded to a half in front of him, shock and puzzlement clear on her face before she jumped up and hugged the boy. “Sebbie Sebbie Sebbie! You’re back!” He waited a few seconds for Sariss to let go.

Seb felt people’s eyes on him as he took a step back, and then nodded to Sariss. “Or…” He paused, “I could be a figment of your over active imagination? You never can tell these days if something is true or you’re just cracking up. Y’know what I’m saying?” The boy raised one eyebrow and tapped the side of his head a few times for effect. The boy was lucky she couldn’t tell how nervous he was. His heart was beating faster than normal, and he was shaking. Seb wasn’t to know how Sariss would react, although so far so good. It had been a good. So far. “So,” he rocked on the balls of his feet, “Hi… how you been?” Seb cleared his throat with a little cough, “Still perfect prefect I see?” This was obvious, with the badge proudly pinned to her top for all to see, “Yes… Classes going well? Course they are. Still duelling queen then? It would shock me otherwise.” Of all questions, these were the last on his mind; however he didn’t feel he had the right to ask.

Cold air blew past them as someone else either entered or left the common room making the hairs on the back of his neck stand up. Sariss being the first familiar face he saw did little to ease his nerves, on the contrary, made him feel more nervous. Seb couldn’t help but feel a deep sense of sadness and guilt, it had been about a year since Seb had ‘up and left’ the school, leaving everything and everyone he cared for behind at the drop of a hat. Of course he and Sariss frequently written to each other, however it just wasn’t enough. There wasn’t a way in letters you could display the emotions behind the words, no matter how full of emotion the words were. It seemed too... formal, even written in his own hand and words.

Before Sariss even had the chance to answer any of his other questions, or even to brush them aside and ask some of her own, Seb once more began to run his mouth. “I noticed you were heading somewhere… I don’t want to keep you, I mean um,” He began to play on the hem of his sleeve, “If you had something planned, I need to unpack too and see if my other things are here yet.” He smiled somewhat uncertainly and moved a little to one side to back up his comment. There was a small silence before Seb quietly whispered, “Sorry…” Before finally shutting up and letter the girl beside him have her say, if any.

It was funny how nervous Seb was and answered every question that he asked Sariss himself within the same breath that he has asked it. The girl could only nod and smile up at him in wonder and bedazzlement. She could hardly believe that he was back!

It was like… like… nothing that she could put in words. Her best friend and boyfriend was back after an entire year of absence. And he was still babbling in that insecure manner when he was… well… insecure. But there was a little smile too… and the dimple in his cheek that came with it automatically.

“Forget the Duelling Chamber!” Sariss blurted out quickly. “I can help you unpack.” She nodded and beamed at him. Even though she knew little of what happened, she was happy to have Seb back at Hogwarts. “And you can tell me aaaall about what you’ve been up to recently… and I’ll just repeat that Hogwarts is still the same and that the Duelling Chamber is still where it was when you left—which is probably a highly interesting piece of trivia considering that it’s Hogwarts we’re talking about…” Sariss trailed off, noticing that she was rambling in about the same manner that Seb had been blabbering on and on and on out of sheer nervousness.

One hand grabbed Seb’s sleeve and tugged, the other waved her wand while she called, “Locomotor trunks!” Sariss grinned up at him. “Easier.”

“Forget the Duelling Chamber!” Sariss had said quickly, “I can help you unpack.” Seb let out a little sigh. The Duelling Chamber, one of the many things he didn’t whatsoever miss at all, not one bit, nah-huh. The things he didn’t miss outweighed the things he did by a large majority. She continued “And you can tell me aaaall about what you’ve been up to recently…” The boy let out a little ‘yeah’ as she went on to say how the school is still the same and such. Things he’d been up to? There really wasn’t much to say. His day was repetitive. From 8am he had to study, two small breaks a day and half an hour lunch. The evening he was assigned tasks and homework. It was his parents idea. A way of teaching him a lesson, as he ‘obviously wasn’t attending the ones at Hogwarts’. He was, naturally, Seb just never did the homework. And they couldn’t have that going against the good name.

Sariss grabbed his sleeve, ““Locomotor trunks! Easier!” She claimed as the trunk began to move with them. As they were walking up the stairs Seb began to speak again. “I need to get an assignment finished and posted to Sir before I unpack properly. Sir is expecting it before tomorrow dinner time. It was my last one to complete; I got it assigned to me yesterday. You know,” Seb lowered his voice thinking his tutor would be able to hear him, “He wanted to give me work for this morning too,” Seb let out a little chuckle. “But yes, I’m on a warning.”

He took a glance behind him. The others were now back to reading their book or doing their homework. “You know, you’re the first person I’ve seen who I actually know. How sad is that? Crawling with ickles, this place is.” With a sigh, they turned and headed towards the boys dorms.
