Virtual Hogwarts > The Dueling Chamber > The sun is setting on Hogwarts

Deep within the castle lay a large room. In this room, blood was spilled, jinxes were hurled, curses and hexes were hollered to the stretch of young teenage vocal chords.

In the centre of that duelling chamber sat a table...a table? A table. A table where a short raven girl sat, a pout on her face, the lip dry with the heat of an English...yes...the heat of an English summer. Do you have a problem with that?

She leaned back in the seat, one leg hooked up, resting on the table. A pack of cards was flicking through her fingers. Loosely strapped to her belt was a wand, dangling in the faint breeze of the chamber. Her robe was flared back, open, the fabric whistling ever so slightly. Her black hat was pulled low over her face, a shadow cross her eyes.

She waited...waited for the one that would come to challenge her. Waited for the Ravon... A clock struck in Dusky's mind. Time was winding down.

A dark corridor lay ahead of a slender figure that stepped out of the shadows, face hidden in the shadow that a large black hat threw on a pale face; a sharp contrast to the figure’s dark hair. Sunlight was pouring in through the windows. How can that be, you ask? A dark corridor, yet bright sunlight? Well, obviously the author of the story has a problem with continuity. Sunlight, darkness. High ceiling, low ceiling. Green banner, yellow banner… But back to the story.

This mysterious figure, clad all in black with an insignificant amount of green and silver to adorn the otherwise plain black robes, walked down the dark corridor with the high sunlit windows, her dark robe (yes, it’s a girl) billowing in the breeze. Which breeze? Never heard of special effects? It’s called atmosphere and will make the scene more… dramatic.

And drama was needed! Not because the girl here was the resident drama queen. Oh no! On the contrary! She despised all sorts of unjustified melodrama for pure melodrama’s (and attention’s) sake. But what some people called her was the duelling queen, a title that she was not all too fond of since it stuck to her like glue to the heel of a boot: It wouldn’t come off.

Hence why she had severely cut down on duelling recently, only duelling to keep halfway in shape and, yes, when one of her friends didn’t mind duelling with her. Those were the best duels anyway.

That day, she had an appointment with an infamous little Hufflepuff whose name people only uttered in hushed whispers. Dusky Pidlerson.

*cue high noon music*

Our protagonist’s shoes make faint clicking sounds with each and every step that she takes along that continuitywise-challenged corridor and closes in on a massive set of doors behind which lies her destination and her destiny. On entering, our protagonist beholds the little feared Hufflepuff, sitting at a table, impatiently shuffling a deck of cards.

As the camera zooms in on Dusky Pidlerson’s wand which is dangling by her side, ready to be grasped whenever needed, we hear our protagonist speak.

*music breaks off suddenly*

A cough is heard from somewhere in the back of the room, answered by a ‘shhh!’

“Pidlerson,” she says, bowing to the fear-inspiring one whose cute exterior does not give away anything about the fearsome dueller that she is. As she takes off the hat, we see who it is. Sariss Ravon, infamous for having spent many a day duelling her heart out in the Duelling Chamber, not resting, not sleeping, until… yes, until she had her spells perfected.

Yet, this was a special occasion. After many a sleepless night spent racking her brain what to occupy herself with when there was no access to the Duelling Chamber, it had finally been reopened. This called for celebration.

Sariss sat down at the table where Dusky Pidlerson was boredly shuffling her cards. The Slytherin grabbed one of the bottles of butterbeer that rested on the table. “Cheers!” she called out and took some greedy sips of it. Splendid.

She rested her elbows on the table then, smirking at the infamous Ducks. “Deal out the cards, partner.”

Posted by: Dusky Pidlerson Jun 20 2004, 04:46 AM
Dusky pulled her leg off the table, straightening up in her chair. "Well hello, Miss Sariss," she purred, beginning to pull out the cards one by one, lying them on the table.

Miss Sariss...that was her real name, but as Dusky dealt, looking at Sariss from beneath the brim of her hat, she remembered another name. They called her Duel...Queen Duel...

The tiniest of gulps was hidden inside Dusky's throat, but any duck with a handful of cards knew never to show weakness.

The door swung as more students filtered into the chamber...some looking over at Dusky and Sariss with a mixture of curiosity and nervosity...wait...a swinging door? There was no swinging door to the chamber. It must have been her imagination.

"It's a shock to see you in town, Miss Sariss," Dusky said softly, flinging another card towards the tall girl. "I would have thought you'd run out...after what happened."

"What happened?" said the Slytherin one. Dusky watched the finger slide up and down the wand, and pursed her lips. "I don't know what you mean, Queen Duel continued. "Nothing has happened of any notice to me."

"You don't remember?" The Hufflepuff lifted a card and kissed it softly, lying it down as the fifth on her personal pile, placing the rest of the cards in the centre of the table between them. "That last duel? Tempers flared quite a bit, didn't they."

Ravon smiled a little, the corner of her mouth twitching upwards, and her shoulders shrugged. "Things happen," she reached out and took her cards.

Dusky took a swig from the butterbeer, her eyes glued to Sariss's face as she rolled her fingers over the cards.

"I think we should play," she murmured. "I stand."

Sariss rose her eyebrows, "Well in that case, I stand too."

Dusky lowered her cards one by one...five diamonds, six diamonds, seven diamons, eight diamonds, nine diamonds. "How does that look to you?" She smiled, smugly, surely.

"It looks fine and dandy," the queen smiled, lowering her own cards. The ten of hearts, jack of hearts, queen of hearts, king of hearts and the almighty ace of hearts.

"A royal flush?" Dusky exclaimed, springing up. "Impossible, you cheat!"

Her hands flew to her waist, wrenching out her wand. The stage was set. It was time for a duel.

Desmond has a barrow in the market place
Molly is the singer in a band
Desmond says to Molly - girl I like your face
And Molly says this as she takes him by the hand.

Chorus:
Obladi oblada life goes on bra
Lala how the life goes on
Obladi Oblada life goes on bra
Lala how the life goes on.

It is a nice muggle song, thank goodness the WWN has breen broadcasting it. “Hello girls. Obladi and oblada to you.” I say smiling. “And start!”

Sariss’s smirk was firmly in place. A true Slytherin poker face. It was practically glued onto her face, unwavering, completely unaffected by the cards. Had she had totally unacceptable cards, her expression would have been the same as with brilliant cards.

“Well, in that case, I stand too,” she said in reply to the infamous Pidlerson’s statement, watching as the much feared and most infamous poker player lowered the cards, one by one, showing them to Sariss who watched with an air of coolness around her that could make you wonder if she could beat a permanent flame-freezing charm in intensity.

A straight flush… Not bad indeed…

“It looks fine and dandy,” said the one who was sometimes referred to as the Queen and began to slowly lower her cards. Even though she preferred spades over hearts, this set of cards surely fulfilled their purpose. Sariss raised her eyebrows for an extended satisfied smirk.

The Pidlerson’s smug expression ran from her face like water, replaced by a look of fury. She had been so sure she’d win. And against anybody else but Poker Queen Sariss, Ducks might have succeeded. Bad luck really, to have to lose with such good cards. Sariss’s compassion was however not needed here.

“Impossible, you cheat!”

Pidlerson jumped up; Sariss followed suit, somewhere in between all that jumped-and-following-suit, an officiator could be heard, singing a Beatles song, completely oblivious to the high-noon-atmosphere that had settled in the chamber when Ducks brandished her wand, Sariss following suit—yet again.

“I don’t cheat,” Sariss forced out through clenched teeth as they stood there, having each other at wand-point. A gentle breeze blew the red dust of the prairie across the marketplace of the village. Mothers picked up their children from the porches of their houses, vultures settling on a nearby dead tree, when the clock began to strike. Wrong setting you say? Continuity is a word that the author of this story cannot even spell.

The clock struck.

High noon.

One…two… three… four… five… six… seven… eight… nine… ten… eleven… and…

"It's showdown time," Dusky hissed, her normally happy face drawn in at the cheeks so that she stared at her opponent with beady eyes.

"You know?" She said smugly, looking down at her wand fondly.

"I've beaten over ten people with this wand...one of the fastest draws in the west...so I've heard."

Where the west actually was, she wasn't too certain. The Hufflepuff commons were at the eastern end of the castle, but west just sounded right.

"Five paces?" She smirked, turning and walking away. One...two...three...four...five...

What followed felt like it took forever, but was really a mere five seconds drawn into long slow motion.

"Fll....iiii....ppppeee....nnnnddddd....oooooo!" Her arm flew forward in a hook, her wand flashing through her air.

There was a ripple in the fabric of reality where the spell shot forth, hurtling through the air, time suddenly moving at normal speed again.

"I hope you like to dance!" Dusky shouted.

Sariss could hardly turn around; so quickly did Dusky blurt out the incantation. She found herself blinded by the sun that was in the zenith now; bright and hot did it shine down on the two duellers, a gentle breeze easing its effects. Those odd-looking balls that seemed to be dried-up bushes were being blown over the marketplace as the clock struck for the twelfth time. And although it all seemed to be happening in slow motion, Sariss was unable to bring up her wand-weapon in time to create a protective shield. It was thus that she was hit, straight in the shoulder.

“Dusk…owwwwww!” she exclaimed and she stumbled backwards, landing on the ground and thus causing a cloud of dust to rise. She coughed and blinked as it was stinging in her eyes. With as much dignity as she could muster, Queen Sariss scrambled to her feet and brushed the red dust from her jet-black robes. “You’ll pay for this, Pidlerson! I’ll make you dance now.”

The Slytherin girl pointed her wand at the rather small Hufflepuff and allowed a dangerous smirk to cross her face. “This town isn’t big enough for two of our calibre, Ducks. It’s either you or me,” she snarled, wishing that she still had her hat on her head, just for effect.

A coyote howled in the distance; and the vultures impatiently flapped their wings. A trapper was leaning in the doorframe of the saloon, lazily playing a tune that fit the atmosphere on his harmonica.

Dead leaves rustled around near Sariss’s feet. A very small tornado that disappeared as quickly as it had shown up.

“Glebula!”

A huge ball of snow was hurtling towards Pidlerson. That ought to teach the little one that nobody called Queen Sariss a cheater and was left unpunished for this insolence.

Dusky stood there with her wand pointed at Sariss, her eyes glued to the queen's face.

That was...that was. Oh heavens. The ball hurtled towards her face, heading dead between her eyes.

WHAM!

Dusky was blown backwards by the force, off her ankles, and onto her back.

She closed her eyes, aching from the force.

But as she lay, her lids shutting, the sun floated across her eyes. The sun? The sun? Yes, the sun. We've been through this. This is drama. Whatever we wish can come true.

Slowly she shifted herself to crouch, staring at the Ravon. Slow...she thought she'd won. Slow...Dusky would show her. Move your wand. Slow. Slow. Never see.

Not again, Pidlerson. You won't get me a second time, thought the poker queen. Cheating. Hah! Never--unless it was absolutely totally inevitably necessary.

"Obsidio!" This time Sassy Sariss was able to protect herself from the sparkling nastiness that Dashing Ducks sent towards her. She smirked, her eyes glittering dangerously out of the shadow that the brim of her hat threw on her face.

Yes, yes, now you might say 'Huh? But she didn't have her hat anymore just a second ago!' How perceptive of you. But if you were really perceptive, you'd have noticed that continuity is something that this story has been lacking since the beginning. Would be sad to break with tradition now, wouldn't it?

What now? Ah yes. A description of the scenery is always a good idea. Camera moving in a wide arch above the market place of this small town in the west. We can see a little boy poking his nose through a doorway, only to be scolded by his mother and quickly drawn back inside as Sariss quite unceremoniously obliterated Dusky's powerful jinx. A horse whinnies nearby; the sound of stomping hooves can be heard. A glass is breaking. And there is always the guy with the harmonica, watching the showdown, deep-set eyes following the duellers' every move as he plays a sombre tune.

Long dark hair rippling down her back in the gentle breeze, Sariss took careful aim, narrowing her eyes in the shadows of her hat's brim. She must be a quite scary appearance like that. Pale face, a slight sneer, as opposed to the darkness of her robes.

How to best proceed here? It was her honour that was at stake. This town belonged to her. She'd not be driven out of it by a little Duck.

This town indeed isn't big enough for two of our calibre... I wonder who the guy in the shadows is... Teehee...

"Aspergo!" A little shower for Pidlerson. She should be grateful. Water was precious in the high noon heat.

"Ravon!" Dusky bellowed, sucking the air from deep within her gut. She stood there bravely, legs apart, as the water sprayed itself in her face.

"A little water never hurt anybody," she narrowed her eyes, aware that the hot blazing summer sun, yes, even in England, would clear away the wet all too soon.

"I aim to teach you a lesson," she said, reaching for her belt to collect a handful...before remembering her wand was instead the necessary implement to deliver her special trick.

"Are you waiting?" she drawled, lazily as the sun crossed the sky yet again, casting a shadow across her, a pool of black ink on the dusty...well for as long as the duel goes, the house elves shall not interfere with the scenery... on the dusty road. Dusky twirled her wand, spinning it around in her fingers.

"Are you ready?" She called. "One...two...three...."

"Vomere limcais" she shouted, raising her wand quick on the draw to send slugs hurtling towards her opponent.

I just hope the wand doesn't stick, she thought, ignoring the dirtiness of slugs to begin with.

The Duck was sprayed with the water and firmly stood her ground. A drenched little duck indeed. No challenge for the almightly Ravon.

Oh yes, do teach me, Duck. And in turn I shall teach you not to accuse someone of cheating when they did not.

"Yes, as a matter of fact I am waiting," Sariss muttered, watching as the shadows became longer and longer. Time was surely passing quickly... And the sun crossed the sky once more, which was rather weird, but since we established that the oddest things could happen here, we'll refrain from pointing out how weird it was exactly.

The dark-clad Slytherin yawned. "Yup... waiting... still waiting... and ready too... yes... yes..." She surveyed the sky. The wind was blowing dark clouds over the sky quickly. Sariss's robes billowed and her hat was blown off her head (What do you want to bet that it will be back there again soon?), as she waited and waited, still ready, her wand still brandished, still ready to hurtle a spell at whatever the Duck would be sending towards her.

Finally!

Sariss swished and swooshed her wand through the air, quite unnecessarily overdramatically, but hey! That's what we're here for. A lot of unnecessary shots of the scenery, slow motion shots, special effects like The Matrix and no significant story behind all the pretty sparkles, dust, stampedes and great battle scenes.

"Obsidi-hi-hoooooooo!" Sariss yawned. "Can someone yell 'CUT!' please? All this stuff wasn't in my contract..."

No answer. The girl grumbled. The guy with the harmonica was still playing a sombre tune that slowly began to grate on Sariss's nerves.

Might as well...

Dusky groaned as she was shot yet again. The Ravon, they said, could stand up to anything. Her power was immeasurable. She raised her hand and blocked yet again...Obsidio...cold and clear, breaking the silence.

A whisp of wheat was carried through the air as the sky grew golder. The little Piddler could sense the end drawing nearer... nothing she did could change that matter.

She watched...narrow slits for eyes...as the Ravon shouted hysterically. Oh yes...powerful. But insane.

Dusky watched still...pulled a little badge from her pocket and stuck it to her breast...a golden star with the letters SPIF printed on it.

She stood tall...yes...granted she was merely 4'4, but are you really going to deny her the pleasure of standing as tall as she should wish? So yes, tall she stood, awaiting the final blow.

She'd return to the wheatfields...much pleasure could be found in the golden strands. Whether to farm, or to lie beneath.

"You will ever be a cheater, Ravon," she called. "A lesson shall be learnt, whoever be the deliverer - Flipendo!"

Sariss's eyes narrowed dangerously as the insolent little Ducksie once more called her a cheater.

"Obsidio!" she chanted through clenched teeth, creating a protective shield that was, due to her anger, much stronger than usual and remained for a few seconds even after it had deflected the attack. "Ha ha! Never shall you defeat me, Ducks!" Sariss swished and flicked her wand dramatically through the air while the soundtrack kicked in loudly, with a flamenco rhythm that brought Zorro to mind.

The Ravon smirked and accioed her hat, for once not breaking the laws of space, time or continuity. Didn't see that one coming, did you? But every good villain's eyes glow from beneath the brim of a hat during the close-up that accompanies the final scene of the show-down.

"I'll make you wish you had never called me a cheater, Duck!" she cried out, pointing her wand at her opponent who was so much her inferior in duelling experience and yet... she feared that if she didn't throw the Duck out of town while she still could, the Duck might pull some devious prank on her that would force her to leave this ghost town out of sheer embarrassment.

Now how to humiliate the Duck best? Haha! Yes, take her weapon. After all Sariss was the villain in this scenario, was she not? With the Duck wearing this badge that reminded her of a sheriff's star, it was the logical conclusion to come to.

An evil smile flickered over the Ravon's face, and she took a step towards Ducksie.

"Expelliarmus!"

Dusky's wand stood ever ready...the distant howl of the wind echoed in her ears as she eyed the Ravon.

This was it. The final showdown. The final defeat. Finally, she would have the Ravon, and tuck her eternally under her belt as one defeated. The essential, the all-powerful, the finally defeated Ravon.

Her dry lips crinkled up into a smile.

"I've got you now, Sariss!" She called out. "There's no way to hide. Give up."

From afar, the reply came, a shrill wail as Sariss stepped toward Dusky.

"Ex..pel..li...ar...mus!"

Dusky drew in her breath as the spell hit her squarely. She'd had no time to dodge it. Her weapon was ripped from her hands and fell useless to the ground.

The duck held her wrist and narrowed her eyes, looking at the Ravon.

"Another day, Sariss, another day."
