Virtual Hogwarts .net > The Lakefront > Fresh air

Seb wandered the Hogwarts grounds, seaching for a place to do his homework, somewhere where there wasn't any silly first years jumping up and down, screetching, and squeeeee!ing with excitement.

His travels had brought him to his old favourite place. The lakefront.

When I was a first year, I used to come here and squeee! when I saw the Squid. Seb rolled his eyes to himself. He'd grown in so many ways over the last year.

Sitting down, he placed his books infront of him then realised he'd forgot his ink and quill.

*Jessie Schulz saw a boy walking along the lakefront and saw him drop his ink and quill. She picked it up and decided to follow him and return it. He sat down and started looking for something. Jessie, realizing it was the quill he was looking for, walked shyly up to him. "Umm, I think you dropped this," Jessie said quietly, "I'm Jessie, nice to meet you."

Sariss sighed as she made her way across the grounds, nervously eyeing the forest from time to time. She adjusted her bag. As always, it was quite heavy. It was a miracle that it hadn't split open on a regular basis. Probably the benefits of some charms, she thought.

The lake would be a lovely destination. Maybe she should have dropped her bag off at the Slytherin Common Room. It was summer out there. And in the heat, the bag seemed heavier than it probably was. She should just sit down at the lake and read something. Unfortunately not a letter. She hadn't received a reply yet. It had been almost two weeks already since she'd last heard from Lucius Malfoy.

She sighed again. Yes, the lakeshore would be a lovely place to be...

But somebody else seemed to have had the same idea. He was sitting at the lakeshore. Sariss approached him.

"Hello, Seb," she said.

Seb looked up at the first year. "Sorry, but I don't think they're mine. I didn't pick mine up from my Dorm. Seb, by the way." He said, nodding his head. He then turned around to Sariss.

"Hello, Sari. You needed to escape the common room too?" he asked her, as he pushed some hair from his eyes. "I've just been sleeping a lot, so I excaped for a short while. I guess I just needed air." He paused, "And to do homework."

"Oh, er... Hello, you," Sariss greeted an unfamiliar girl.

She gave a small smile and sat down near Seb. "Yes, the Common Room... It's still crowded, I suppose. I didn't even bother to check first. Came directly down here after having had a look into the Owlery."

With a groan she removed her bag from her shoulder and rubbed the spot where it had been sitting. It was definitely too heavy for a girl with the build of a Seeker.

"You're doing homework?" she asked and then had to sneeze. Darn nature out here. "Which subject?"

Posted by: Seb_Darwin Aug 12 2003, 12:12 AM
"I need to do a lot, but, I'm not doing any. I can't get into it." 'And it'd help if my brain hadn't gone funny.' "So the Owlery, eh? Who you're waiting for a reply off? Some secret admirer?" Seb asked, raising his eyebrows a few times.

He leant back onto his elbows and looked thoughtfully across the lakefront, watching the heat radiate from the surface.

Sariss looked out over the lake. The squid was lazily swimming around in the distance; from time to time a tentacle broke through the surface of the lake.

"No, not an admirer. Why would I have an admirer anyway? Brainy girls don't have such things as admirers," she said. "And I don't want that anyway. No, I've been having a correspondence with Lucius Malfoy for the past couple of weeks. His first two letters came after a day or two. But now I haven't heard from him for almost two weeks." She bit her lip.

"Uh, so Governer Malfoy is your penpal. Gotcha." Seb closed his eyes, and with a frown let his head roll back.

He never had anything interesting to say. It was either always junk, or random things which made no sense. The weather?... Boring. Classes?... Boring. Quidditch. PASS.

"Planning anything good over the holidays?" Holidays, yeah, smashing convo. Dip-stick.

Posted by: Sariss Aug 12 2003, 12:31 AM
"Penpal?" Sariss repeated. "No. No, it's just... well... I'd been enquiring at the Ministry for ages. You know the mess that my family tree is... well... was... After all, I managed to reconstruct most of my mother's side for this History of Magic essay... But I still don't know who my father is... And as the Ministry seems to have conveniently ignored my letters, I asked Mr Malfoy to enquire on my behalf. He's a man of influence after all. And it turns out that he actually knew my mother. Maybe he can help me find out if I have any family left?"

She exhaled and looked at Seb. "I really don't want to spend my summer holidays with my foster family. I mean, they're good people and have been much more understanding since they learnt that I'm really a witch... but they're Muggles anyway. The thought of living with them for a couple of weeks is as if I were facing imprisonment... If only I had wizarding relatives..."she trailed off, the thought that her mother's deathday would be recurring soon sharply resurfacing in her mind.

Seb sat back up and rubbed his elbows to rid the dust. "Sorry. I, you know, didn't mean to bring up..." He gestured with his hands. "Bad memories."

He rolled up the sleeves on his arms to try cool off. Did she say imprisonment? That sounded... unpleasent. To say the least. A muggle family. He'd never been around muggles that much. He know of things like a TV, and he once wandered into a muggle appliance shop and broke a dish washer thinking it was a giant magical box and got stuck between a giant food chiller whatsit, but that was his limit.

He thoughtfully bit on one of his nails as he thought. "Well, you know you can make your way to Darwin Manor to come see Cien and I if you want a day out or something. The more the merrier! Show them that I've made friends." He grinned, but narrowed his eyes as he wandered into a day dream. "Yes, that would be good."

Posted by: Sariss Aug 12 2003, 01:05 AM
Sariss shook her head. "It's not like the memories weren't always present." She gave Seb a small smile. "Sorry that I'm not the most cheerful person to have a conversation with."

Sariss leant back and lay in the grass, trying not to think about all the crawly things that were inhabiting this area of her surroundings.

"Me at Darwin Manor with you and Cien?" she said, blinking. "I'm... well... thanks for the offer but... you know... this..." she stumbled over her words, not knowing how to express that it was extremely hard for her to see the two of them together, hugging and kissing all the time, and that it hurt her, that it made her feel like... She didn't know. It was just that whenever she had a conversation with one of the two, she seemed to be totally forgotten as soon as the other half of the couple arrived in the room. "I don't know if I can take it." Her voice sounded a bit thick to her and she tried to blame the fact that her eyes were somewhat stinging on the sun.

Seb dropped his grin, and pushed a strand of hair behind his ear.

"It was just an offer for tea or something." He muttered. "So you wouldn't be lonely. Just thought you'd like to be with some friends." He gathered up his books then stood up. "Doesn't matter. I'll go... back now. I left my ink anyway."

He looked down at the books in his arms, turned and left.

Sariss jumped up and ran after Seb. "No... really... I'm sorry... I'd love to come..." she rambled. "It's just that..." She exhaled and shook her head. "Doesn't matter. I can take it. I'd love to visit you."

She bit her lip and smiled somewhat sadly.

Posted by: Seb_Darwin Aug 12 2003, 01:33 AM
Seb stopped and turned around. "No, you don't want to come, Sariss. That's ok I get that loud and clear. I don't want you to visit because you feel you've hurt my feelings or something neither. No pity, no sympathy, no thanks."

'Liar.'

He turned and started to walk once more back to the castle. "That's perfectly fine."

"B-but... Seb..." Sariss said weakly, as she watched him walk back to the castle. Her eyes were flowing over and she quickly ran back to the lakeshore where she'd left her bag. She dropped down on her knees to pick up her bag, but then the tears were running freely. She could not possibly head back into the castle when she had dissolved into tears. People would just make fun of her. And now that she'd offended Seb so thoughtlessly... She was terribly ashamed of herself. Why hadn't she just said out loud that she couldn't bear the feeling that made her heart clench up when she saw Cien and Seb together? Maybe Seb would have understood? But now she had a feeling that he wasn't even her friend anymore.

After a few very long minutes, lost in her own dark thoughts, she wiped away the tears, forced her features into an expression that was a mask of indifference and headed back towards the castle, cursing the stupid decision that had led her to going for a walk...
