| Professor Giordano greeted her first-year students with a rare smile. “Sit down, sit down,” she said, enthusiastically waving them inside the classroom. The students inched past her as they went to sit at their desks, a bit disconcerted by the unusually good mood of their professor. They sat down and prepared quills and parchments, the cauldrons that they’d brought with them completely forgotten as they hadn’t as much as looked at them all year. “Today,” the professor began. “Today’s the day you’ve been waiting for. I think you’re well set for potions-brewing now. So I’ll let you loose on your cauldrons.” The faces of the majority of students lightened up. No more boring theory, no more goggling at ingredients, a cut-down on essay-writing in favour of more practical work. The professor nodded. “It’s a very pleasant mixture too if I dare say so. Not too dangerous in the various stages of its brewing either. Now what might this miracle of a potion be?” she asked no one in particular as she made her way towards the blackboard before which her desk stood. “It’s an invention of Professor Snape. He used to swear all his students to secrecy about it, so that it would be taught exclusively at Hogwarts. You might wonder how something like this can be kept secret if it’s such an impressive invention…” she trailed off and reached inside an open drawer, pulling out a scroll of parchment, and placed it onto the desk. “Have you ever, students, found yourself in a dilemma such as the following? You stand next to the buffet at a party of some sorts or even the Christmas Feast and find yourself spoilt for choice?” she asked, receiving a couple of nods in reply. “The human stomach can only hold so much, and you’re inevitably fated to miss out on some of the delicacies that are offered. Well, now you can have it all because of the potion that Professor Snape came up with years ago. It is a potion so brilliant that it can be whatever you want it to be. It is a quite simple process really. This potion, if mixed correctly creates what I like to call a "vortex" in the synapses and sensory neurones between brain and tongue. The usual roles of this passageway are reversed. But now, instead of the brain interpreting what the tongue is sensing, the brain dictates what it wants to taste. This mixture is very special indeed, and I intend to share it with you, as long as you sign this form." Isabella did the same that Professor Snape had always done prior to sharing this valuable information. She took the scroll of parchment and handed it to the class. “Pass this around. Sign your name on it, each of you. The scroll onto which every student in the class now signed their name read:
As soon as all the names had been scribbled down on the scroll, Isabella collected it from the last student to sign their name on and pulled out her wand, pointing it at the scroll, muttering something under her breath. A streak of silver shot out of the wand tip and seemed to engulf the whole scroll, and then many single silk-like fibres exploded from the parchment and were inhaled by each member of the class. A few pupils felt slightly overcome, but some of the non-Muggle-born students had a rough idea about what their professor had just done. She explained it anyway. "Now, children, I have just jinxed this form, so that each name on it will come to a horrible horrible fate if they ever choose to tell anyone the secrets of this potion. If you "spill the beans," your face will sprout a large amount of blackened warts, which will grow to form the word ‘cheat.’ I don’t think it’s a reversible process, seeing as one of the girls that I went to school with here had barely begun listing up the ingredients for a wizard who would have paid millions of galleons for the recipe. Last time I saw her, she still ran around with a towel wrapped around her head, covering her face…” She smirked. “Let this be warning enough. If you spill, you won’t win a beauty contest afterwards anymore." Isabella took a piece of charmed chalk and began to write on the blackboard, saying, “Now that you’re sworn to secrecy, you’ll be able to read what I write on the blackboard. This is a means of safety, just in case one of you should accidentally have forgotten to sign their name on the parchment.” For those who had been honest enough to sign the parchment, the following words appeared on the blackboard:
Isabella set up the cauldron and fired it up after she had poured a litre of water into it. "Now, to make the Omnitaste Potion, all we need are some simple ingredients. As you see, the recipe is rather simple, its difficulty more lying in the lengths you’ll have to go to to acquire the ingredients than the brewing itself,” the professor explained, watching the water in the cauldron beginning to simmer. “Well, as you see, I first poured one litre of water into the cauldron. Now that it’s simmering, I shall add two drops of Erumpent fluid. This is then stirred for 5 minutes.” She had added the two drops and begun to stir while she spoke. “If you taste the potion at this point,” she said after a few minutes of silence, “it should remind you of lemons. But beware! Only a little sip. Otherwise your head will be blown clear off your shoulders,” she warned as she dipped a small spoon into the unfinished potion. She tasted it merely with the tip of her tongue and nodded in approval. “Once you feel the potion is thoroughly stirred, you need to add this..." Professor Giordano pulled out a jar out of one of the drawers in her desk. This desk truly held some miraculous things in the depths of its drawers. When she held up the jar, the students gasped at what was inside it. It was a fine powder, so fine that it looked almost liquid, but it couldn’t be a liquid. It was impossible to tell what colour it was. It was every colour imaginable, and little rays of light darted around the otherwise dull dungeon, twinkling in the eyes of the astonished students. "These are rainbow shavings,” Isabella explained. “They are very rare, and I had to go all the way to Austria to shave these myself, so be careful with them. You need to add only half a gram, and then stir again thoroughly." The powder glittered as it smoothly flowed off the spatula onto the scales and then glittered some more as it dripped into the potion. The students could see that the mixture in the cauldron now took on the rainbow shavings' every-colour property and looked amazing in the dingy half light of the Potions classroom as Professor Giordano stirred it thoroughly. "There is just one thing left to add,” the professor said eventually. “A grated hair from a Centaur." She opened a vial that contained several long hairs and grated one of them before she allowed it to drop into the potion. “Now it has to be heated up again, but be careful that it doesn’t come to a boil. Leave it to simmer for a minute and then extinguish the fire and leave it to cool.” She did so. “When it’s cooled down, it can be bottled up and drunk. I don’t mind if you keep some of it for later. “Right now, my faithful students, it's your turn. Your first attempt at potion-making. I want you to follow my instructions carefully. Other than that, enjoy. I shall have an eye on you and help you if you have any problems.” ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Homework: Easy. RP making the potion. Include what it tastes like for you. Failures are accepted as well as triumphs, no matter what your overly pedantic professor says in her lesson. |

| Silverdawn Kadamon First Year, Hufflepuff Slipping into the potions classroom, Silverdawn breathed a sigh of relief on noting the bright smile on Professor Giordano‘s face. Erm, perhaps it wasn’t that bright a smile… but at least it was definitely better than the sinister gleam she held the previous lesson before, and that hadn’t boded well for Silverdawn. Not surprising, a practical of how harmful undiluted bubotuber pus can be isn’t exactly something that her heart can take… Once her quill and parchment were sat on the table, the dark-haired professor’s announcement that they were finally going to start on a practical lesson had Silverdawn beaming immediately. Leaning over to Dusky, she whispered, “Dusky, we’re finally try out potions-making!” With an attentive ear, the young Hufflepuff listened to what the potions mistress had in store for them, wondering what the potions might be. To learn that the potion’s invented by Professor Snape had Silverdawn’s eyes lighted up with much interest, more so when her uncle had made it to be exclusively learned in Hogwarts. Knowing him, only the better potions he’d invented were made to the school whilst the normal ones commissioned (like the Wolfsbane potion) were publicly used. Of course, there were the best potions… but those were only known amongst the previous Order as well as family, hence her privilege to know the existence of all of the potions and the recipes of the ex-Head of Slytherin’s inventions. Listening to Professor Giordano’s description of the what the potion is used for, the child’s mind whirled back to the time when her mother had fed her the potion before she dug into a huge variety of foods for Thanksgiving four years ago at Snape manor… ~”~”~”~”~ “The synapses and sensory neurones?” Silverdawn echoed in puzzlement before glancing at her twin, who also had no idea what their uncle meant. Severus Snape had explained to the duo for quite some time about the complexities of the human mind, but the concept of motor neurones, sensory neurones, receptors, dendrons and the Central Nervous Systems were still not registered in the minds of the two seven-year-olds. Surrendering, the dark-haired man grimaced and slapped a hand over his forehead whilst Silverdawn’s mother chuckled at her brother’s apparent exasperation. Noticing Severus’s white eye, this time aimed at her instead, Sandrilene Snape bit back her laughter and gestured over to her husband, who promptly resumed a straight face and commented, “Sherry, Azrael, just keep in mind that the potion changes your tastes buds so that your instinct to eat everything won’t control you as much as your brain does.” “Huh?” The twins intoned as one, and her mother finally gave up covering up her laughter on seeing the same expression Severus had earlier on being mirrored upon Rodrique Kadamon’s face as he watched the same confusion still apparent on his children’s faces. Their eldest son, now a thirteen-year-old, finally spoke up, black-eyes contemplative, “Silv, Az, in short, just eat and don’t bother about what they’d said.” “Lucifer!” The indignant voices of the three adults had Silverdawn and Azrael bursting into laughter whilst Lucifer just sipped his iced wine, a deceptively innocent look on his face… ~”~”~”~”~ Shaking herself out of her thoughts, Silverdawn noticed that the class were now lining up in front of the professor’s table to sign a piece of parchment, and blushing, the silvan-haired girl hurriedly went over, wondering what had happened whilst she ‘zonked’ out. When it was her turn to see the parchment, Silverdawn had to bite back a smile on seeing the words written. I solemnly declare that I shall not divulge the ingredients of Professor Snape's Omnitaste Potion to anyone else, for any reason whatsoever, unless it be in test or examination form… So that’s what he did to his students… For a moment, Silverdawn hesitated on signing the parchment, seeing as she need not require the agreement to get the recipe. However, under the curious stares of the other students waiting to sign, the Hufflepuff hurriedly scribbled her name down before returning over to her seat, fishing out her cauldron and getting everything ready before the professor demonstrated the making of the potion. The potion was rather easy to make, and Professor Giordano demonstrated it in such a deceptively easy manner that Silverdawn wondered if the entire class could succeed it the way she’d done. The rainbow shavings did make the young girl gaze in awe as she always did… Not surprising, the ethereal glow the rainbow shavings emitted will never lose its beauty in anyone’s eyes, and Silverdawn loved the separate colors each of the shavings (in different shades no less) combine together to form an exquisite swirl of a vortex-like color. Once the dark-haired professor allowed them to start on their potion, Silverdawn quietly pulled out a measuring jug and measured a litre of water from the tap before carefully tipping the entire jug of water into her cauldron. Then, turning on the fire, she allowed it to start boiling first whilst going over to the professor’s table with her scales, intent on weighing the most crucial ingredient first. She was one of the few there, and several students raised curious eyebrows as to why they collected the rainbow shavings so early into the class. Silverdawn just shook her head, the water will take at least eight minutes to boil under full fire in such cold temperature, the simmering time will take another minute. I might as well make use of the time before everyone comes up queuing for the rainbow shavings. And this is true, the queue might become rather long later on when everyone’s finished their stirring. One good thing about this potion though, was that none of the ingredients require perfect addition timing, hence, one can wait for minutes before adding the rainbow shavings and the potion will still work. Measuring the half gram of shavings was easy, and deftly, the silvan-haired girl transferred it into a small vial and covered it, not wanting any amount to be lost to the wind. Smiling happily, Silverdawn then took her allocated centaur hair and made way for her table, where the cauldron was already starting to boil. After placing all the ingredients she had gathered carefully on the table, the girl switched the fire to a lower degree, allowing herself to rest for a while whilst the water started simmering. A few seconds later, the girl noted that the water was fully simmering and smiling, took out a hourglass, pressing on one of the intricate knobs by it. That done, the girl allowed two drops of Erumpent liquid to mix into the water whilst with her free hand, turned the hourglass. Fishing out a glass rod to stir the liquid concoction, the grains of sands began to fall into the lower half of the hourglass, and one whose observant enough will note that exactly five minutes later, the upper half of that timepiece was bare of its final grain of sand… Proving that such a timepiece was still effective even in modern times. With the five minutes up, Silverdawn withdrew the glass rod and lightly used her last finger to scrape a little of the potion to taste. As expected, the lemony taste lingered at the tip of her tongue, and the girl nodded in satisfaction before adding the rainbow shavings from the dark vial. The fine powder glittered as it melted itself into the potion, and the myriad of colors it formed within the potion when it was stirred meticulously had Silverdawn smiling happily. It was nice to mix such a pretty potion… but that sounds so vain! Grating the hair of a centaur was more problematic, for the hair itself was very fine. Like how she was drilling since a long time age, Silverdawn grated the fine hair just directly above the cauldron, allowing the pieces to fall into the potion while she was grating. That alone took but a few seconds, and each of the pieces disintegrated on contact with the potion. Once it was done, Silverdawn turned the heat up by a notch, and waited patiently for the potion to starting simmering. While her eyes were still trained on the potion, her hands never stopped moving as she took out eight small vials from her bag, unstoppering them before turning off the fire when the potion had finally simmered for a minute. It took almost ten minutes before the potion cooled, and quietly, Silverdawn ladled the potion equally into the eight vials, labelling each on of them carefully before placing seven in a velvet pouch. The last, she kept outside whilst clearing up the apparatus used, scrubbing each of them thoroughly before placing them back to where they originally were. When the class was almost over, Silverdawn glanced around the room, glad that most of her fellow classmates successfully made it. There were a few terrible noises, but all in all, it was fine. Grinning when she saw that Dusky had made it, the silvan-haired girl then lifted her vial in toast to her petite friend, drinking deeply after that. The potion, now cooled, brought about a multitude of flavors bombarding her taste buds. First, it had been honey, then ham, then cheese, then all sorts of other tastes started ensnaring her senses. It ought to have been weird, but miraculously, all of the tastes melded harmoniously into one until all that was left in her mouth was a cool taste of ice and menthol… Ah… How I’ve missed this potion… |

| Alatari walked into the dungeon, expecting nothing but a lecture and some extra sleep. But she noticably lightened up when they were to be POTION MAKING!! She walked up to Professor Giordano's desk and signed the scroll. Alatari listened intently to her explaination and cringed when Prof. Giordano said they wouldn't win beauty contests. She didn't like contests but no good looks? WAHHHH!! Licking her lips, trying to quell her fear, she took out the ingredients she had and collected the ones she did not from the professor. taking a large breath, she began to make the potion. Alatari poured in the water carefully, so not to slosh it out of her cauldron. Squeezing two drops of the fluid into the cauldron, she began to stir. When the five minutes were up and after she tasted it, she gingerly dropped in more or less a half gram of the rainbow shavings, marveling at their incredible beauty. "I'm making a potion, I'm making a potion..." She silently chanted in her mind. Then, she withdrew a centaur hair and grated it to near perfection. Simmering the mixture and smiling broadly, she waited till it was completed. Taking three bottles, she filled one for the professor to check and the other two for herself. Marching up to her desk, she dropped off her bottle. "Here you go, Professor. That was fun!" She called happily as she packed up and left the classroom. (OOC: I honestly think I suck at RP's. Was that long enough?) |

| Kalina Match Hufflepuff - 1st Year “Sit down, sit down” Kalina Match heard as she entered Professor Giordano’s Potion Class. Kalina was taken aback by the Professor’s smile and enthusiasm. She thought it was just ickle firsties like her who acted that way. Kalina quickly scooted over to her usual seat and pulled out her supplies for taking notes. “Today,” the Professor began. “Today’s the day you’ve been waiting for. I think you’re well set for potions-brewing now. So I’ll let you loose on your cauldrons.” Kalina raised her eyebrows in reaction to the Professor’s words. Well, well, well – we are finally getting to some practical application exercises Kalina said to herself very excited about the prospect of using her brand new cauldron. Kalina lifted her quill and began to take notes. Looking up when Professor Giordano mentioned that the potion they would be studying today was an invention of Professor Snape’s. Well that’s interesting she thought. But why do we have to be sworn to secrecy? Kalina began to wonder why and how when Professor Giordano reached into a drawer and revealed a scroll of parchment placing it upon her desk. Taking notes as the Professor lectured Kalina wrote “Creates a vortex in the synapses and sensory neurones between brain and tongue.” But does it keep you from getting fat I wonder? she thought as she looked up and watched Professor Giordano pass the scroll to the nearest student sitting in front of her. Kalina heard her say “Pass this around. Sign your name on it, each of you.”
Kalina read the promise and signed her name at the bottom of the list before passing it to the student next to her. Once everyone signed it Professor Giordano took the scroll back and using her wand she jinxed it. Kalina recognized her movements being familiar with jinxes, hexes and charms herself but she was surprised by the reactions of several of her classmates. Some of them appeared rather startled. Once Professor Giordano finished explaining what jinx she had used and all its nasty effects should anyone “spill the beans” she pointed out that the recipe for today’s potion was on the blackboard. Kalina glanced up at the blackboard and silently read the list of ingredients. She never doubted that she would be able to see the words, Kalina was serious about her studies. She desired to learn everything that Hogwarts had to teach her. Kalina paid close attention as Professor Giordano demonstrated to the class the recipe for the Omnitaste Potion, step-by-step. Now it was her turn. It felt like she had been waiting forever for this moment. The class broke into a hum of activity and voices as students rearranged desks and chairs making room for all the cauldrons that needed to be set up. Finally getting her cauldron just right Kalina walked to the front of the classroom and collected the ingredients she would need. There were trays there so she carefully added what she needed to the tray and walked back to the spot where her cauldron was set up. She set her tray down on her desk and picked up her bag. Kalina shuffled though the items in her bag looking for the tools that her Dad gave her for Potions class before she left home for Hogwarts. Okay here is the scale, kitchen timer, my wooden spoon…now where is that microplane grater? Ahh, there it is. Kalina added these things to her tray. Pulling out her wand from the recesses of her robe she started a medium-high flame under the cauldron. She then slipped the wand back into place and reached for the 1-liter bottle of spring water from the tray. Opening that she added it to the cauldron. While the water was slowly coming to a simmer she organized the rest of her ingredients so she would be prepared to add them at the necessary phases of production. Taking the scale she measured the amount of rainbow shavings she had been allotted. Colors inconceivable sparkled on the scale. Oh no…she had .15 grams too much! Kalina removed the excess back into the little jar to give back to Professor Giordano. It would be a shame to waste it, it was precious stuff afterall besides that much extra could throw off the whole potion. The drops of Erumpent fluid was all set in a small vial with its own dropper and she checked the 1 centaur hair that she had. Yes – that should be sufficient. Glancing over her shoulder to check on the status of the water in her cauldron she noticed that the water was just beginning to gather bubbles at the bottom and begin to gently steam. Okay – just another moment and it will be ready. Kalina looked down at her notes to verify her next step. Add two drops of Erumpent fluid and stir for 5 minutes. Kalina reached for her timer and set it for 5 minutes. It had a convenient clip on the back so she clipped it to the front of her robe. Taking the Erumpent fluid she checked the cauldron once again verifying that the water was now simmering. Good she thought as she added precisely two drops, then she hit the start button on her timer. Returning the vial to the tray and picked the wooden spoon and turned back to stir the potion for the remaining time. Suddenly the little timer started to beep. Students looked over to where Kalina was working with annoyance. “Sorry” she mumbled “Just a timer.” Looking down into the cauldron Kalina took a sample on her spoon. She blew it to cool it slightly before she took a sip. Oh yeah…her lips puckered right up …lemon-y. Looking back at her notes she checked for the next step. Right, the rainbow shavings are next. Kalina lifted the little plate off her scale and poured it into her cauldron. Light and color shimmered and sparkled from the cauldron. She gave it a stir. Now for the last ingredient…the hair of a Centaur. Taking the microplane and the single strand of hair Kalina grated it over the cauldron. She returned the grater to the tray and picked up the spoon again. She gave it one more stir and watched as the brew came to a simmer again. Setting the timer for 60 seconds she watched as it gently rolled and bubbled. Kalina adjusted the flame down a little using her wand again. That’s better she thought. She was being careful so that it wouldn’t start to boil. Hearing the timer beep again she reached up and turned it off. Looking back at the cauldron she commanded the flames to extinguish so that the potion could now cool. Kalina returned her wand to her inner pocket in the depths of her robe and brushed her hands together. “I think that’s it” she said as she started to clean up. Finally after a while Kalina checked the cauldron to see is it had cooled sufficiently. Touching the side tentatively she felt that it no longer was hot to the touch. Going back to her bag she rummaged around until she found a funnel. Kalina kept the empty 1-liter bottle and she used the funnel now to fill the bottle with her freshly brewed Omnitaste Potion. Saving just a little to have as a sample, Kalina capped off the bottle and then lifted the spoon once again to taste the finished product. “Yummmmy” she said licking the spoon. “Doesn’t get much better then Dark Chocolate. ” |

| Chach listened intently as the Professor explained that they were actually going to be making potions today. Her face lit with excitement. She squealed with delight attacting the attention of several of the students around her. She gave them all dirty looks and pointed to the professor as if saying, 'Pay attention!'. She smiled as the professor passed around a slip of paper. She read it softly to herself. "I solemnly declare that I shall not divulge the ingredients of Professor Snape's Omnitaste Potion to anyone else, for any reason whatsoever, unless it be in test or examination form." By this point several of the students were glaring at her. She gave a tiny growl and they quickly returned to their tasks. She hastily sighned the paper in her sloppy hand writing and handed it to the professor. She began doodling on her note pad when a silver streak caught her eye. She smirked. She'd read about that spell in a book and she tricked her sister into sighing a paper that said that if she devouged anything that was enclosed in her diary the word 'Phony' would appear across her face. Professor G. waved her wand and the ingreadients appeared on the board. She smiled and quickly gathered the ingredients and copying them down in her note book as not to forget them for a later date. She set up her culdron station hastily, as she was really excited about doing this lesson. Potions had never been fun for her before. She looked to the board and named the first ingredient. "1 liter of water" she rooted through her potions containers looking for it. "Liter of water, liter of water..... Ah-ha!" she said loudly making all of the students look up from their work. "Woof!" she barked at all of them. She quickly poured the bottle of water into the culdron and looked to her notes for the next one. She pulled out what she thought was a bottle of 2 drops of Erumpent fluid but in actually was Embulming fluid used for several more complicated potions. She added the two drops and stirred not even knowing her mistake. She stirred the potion througly giving it an extra minute and went to taste it. The water on the tip of her tounge tasted oily and gross. She sighed and took the culdron to the Lavertory and dumped it comming back with a sad looking pout on her face. She decided not to let a simple mistake let her down, and pulled out another lietre of water and dumped it into the culdron. She bend low to the desk to see the names of the potions clearly. Smiling she took the bottle of Erumpent fluid and double checked it before adding two solemn drops. She stirred it for another six minutes and tasted it with the tip of her tounge. Her face squenched into a sour looking mug and she nodded. "Yeah, that's about right." she said to herself, maybe a little louder then she should have. She looked to her note book for the next ingrident and picked up the beautiful jar of Rainbow Shavings and dumped exactly ½ of a gram into the culdron. She bit her lip as she did this and concentrated hard. "Phew!" she said loudly whiping her head, "Glad I did that one right. Ok, onto the next ingredient." By this time the students around her had learned to close their ears and ignore the boisterous Gryffindor. She pulled out a tube of grated centaur hairs and pulled out one and tossed it happily into the potion. She sat it on the burner and let it simmer for the indicated amout of time before taking her spoon-like thing and tasting it. "Mmm Strawberries!" she said quietly and to herself. She pulled out some extra tubes from her Gryffindor bag that she always brang to class with her just in case and filled them with the lovely potion. She placed the tubes back in her bag leaving one sit on the table. Soon it was time to leave, the bell had rung and the students were filing out. Chach smirked and walked up to the Professor. "Here y' go." she said handing her the testube. "A sample of my work, for you Professor. Let me know how I did." She with a quick turn around movement she swept form the classroom. |

| Lily walked into the dungeon quite gloomily. She wasn’t up for reports and essays after such a stressful day… Sighing, Lily dragged her legs into the classroom. Professor Giordano’s mood didn’t match Lily’s. Professor seemed a bit cheerful today…quite unlike Lily. Taking her usual seat, Lily began to watch Professor Giordano, hoping for the miracle that she would let them leave quickly today. “Today,” Professor Giordano said “Today’s the day you’ve been waiting for. I think you’re well set for potions-brewing now. So I’ll let you loose on your cauldrons.” “Brew potions?” Lily’s gloom instantly evaporated “We’re going to brew potions today?” Professor Giordano nodded, “It’s a very pleasant mixture too if I dare say so. Not too dangerous in the various stages of its brewing either. Now what might this miracle of a potion be?” Lily sat up straight. She was sure that meant no report or essay to write today…taking out a few things, Lily began scribbling a little of what Professor Giordano was saying. This mixture is very special indeed, and I intend to share it with you, as long as you sign this form." Professor Giordano passed around the scroll of parchment. When it reached Lily, she picked up her quill and wrote ‘Lily Flower’ in a neat scrawl, and then passed it to the person next to her. After Professor Giordano collected the parchment, and placed the charm on it, she flicked her wand and the ingredients appeared on the blackboard. Lily added it to her notes quickly, and began to set up her cauldron when Professor Giordano did so. Professor Giordano went on to adding a litre of water. "Now, to make the Omnitaste Potion, all we need are some simple ingredients. As you see, the recipe is rather simple, its difficulty more lying in the lengths you’ll have to go to acquire the ingredients than the brewing itself,” She explained, “Well, as you see, I first poured one litre of water into the cauldron. Now that it’s simmering, I shall add two drops of Erumpent fluid. This is then stirred for 5 minutes.” Lily listened very closely. She didn’t want to miss a word of what Professor Giordano was saying. Lily shuddered when Professor Giordano said that their heads would be blown of their shoulder if they had more than one sip. Professor Giordano then dipped her spoon into her cauldron, tasted it and nodded. “Once you feel the potion is thoroughly stirred, you need to add this..." Professor Giordano reached inside a drawer and pulled out a jar. Lily gasped when she saw it…it seemed like thick liquid, and very thin powder. Lily didn’t know what it was. It was made of all different colours. "These are rainbow shavings,” She explained, “They are very rare, and I had to go all the way to Austria to shave these myself, so be careful with them. You need to add only half a gram, and then stir again thoroughly." Lily nodded, absorbing it. The potion inherited the all colour trait when the powder was added into the cauldron. Professor Giordano then pulled out a Centaur’s hair, and explained that it was the last ingredient. After grating it thoroughly, she added it into the cauldron. Professor Giordano let it heat, and then left it to cool. While it was cooling, she told them to go ahead and make their potions. Lily went up to Professor Giordano to get the ingredients that weren’t in her kit. When she got them, Lily took a deep breath, and then began. She poured a litre of water into the cauldron and then lighted it. Checking her list, she saw that she had to add two drops of Erumpent fluid. After that was done, Lily began to stir her cauldron. Professor Giordano said that it had to be stirred for precisely five minutes. Lily must have looked at her watch half a dozen times before five minutes were up. Following what Professor Giordano had done, Lily picked up a spoon and took a small sip. It seemed to be stirred right, and so she moved on to the next step, which was to add the rainbow shavings. Lily was certainly looking forward to this…taking the amount Professor Giordano had told her to, Lily dropped it into the cauldron and marveled at it’s beauty…it was absolutely stunning. Lily wanted to stare at it for a long while, but she knew she had to finish her potion – and there was only one step left. Picking up the Centaur hair carefully, Lily grated it. It was very fine now, like a powder. Lily dropped it into the potion, and then let it heat. Lily looked over her potion the whole time. When she felt that it was near boiling, Lily extinguished the fire, and then sat down on her chair, waiting for it to cool. Lily looked around at everyone else, and saw that a few were done, and as Lily was, they too, were waiting for their potion to cool down. Nearly ten minutes later, Lily bottled her potion. She had two bottles full. Taking a very tiny sip of one bottle, Lily licked her lips. “Chocolate…” Lily said, savouring it. This potion was tasting better than the usual chocolate would… Getting a hold of herself, Lily brought up the next bottle to Professor Giordano. Soon after, the bell rang, and Lily left feeling immensely satisfied. She had got to brew her first potion, and it seemed to be correct. . |

| Lilly Flower First Year Gryffindor Lilly walked into class and sat as Professor Giordano told them about this secret potion. Well time to get cracking she thought to her self as she pulled out her caldron and potion ingredients. "Okay first thing one litre of water." She said more to herself then to anyone. Walking over to where a spigot shot out from the wall and turning the knob so that water gushed into the jar she held below it. Returning to her seat and carefully measuring out the water to exactly on litre. Then once producing a single litre Lilly dumped it into her cauldron in front of her and lit the fire beneath it. Once seeing that the fire was properly lit Lilly produced a small bottle Erumpent fluid. Pulling off the top and squeezing out two drops into the water. Taking a spoon she stirred the potion for five minutes making sure it never got too hot to boil the water. Now was the moment that she had been dreading tasting it. What if I take too much she thought to herself "Well bottoms up" she said taking a small spoon and lightly dipping it into the potion. Pulling the spoon up and taking the tiniest taste. It tastes like very bitter lemonade she thought to herself Well that's a good sign I guess. Taking a small spoon at which she could measure the rainbow shavings with and measuring them out and carefully dumping them into her potion. Almost done she thought happily to herself. Taking the finely grated centaur hair and adding the last ingredient with a sigh of relief. Taking the time to watch the fire under the cauldron carefully so as not allowing it to boil then soon extinguishing it and waiting for it to cool. Walking up to the desk and returning with a small vile with which to put the finished potion in writing her name on it and carefully pouring a sample of the potion into it and then writing her name on it. |

| Alexandria Crowley Hufflepuff 1st Year When Alex heard Professor Giordano announce “Today’s the day you’ve been waiting for. I think you’re well set for potions-brewing now. So I’ll let you loose on your cauldrons.” she couldn't believe her ears! Her arms trembling in excitement, Alex grabbed her cauldron off of the floor under her desk and dusted it off. Finally, she will get to brew her first ever potion! As Alex had finished clearing away a spot on the table in front of her, the professor explained that the potion they will be brewing today is a super-secret recipe devised by the former potions master Professor Snape himself. The whole class had to sign a piece of parchment saying that they promised to keep the ingredients a complete secret. Alex signed her messy scrawl onto the list and passed it on. As far as she was concerned, her lips were sealed. After everyone had signed their name, Professor Giordano cast a spell on the roll of parchment and caused it to spew out silky fibre-like strands. One was inhaled by Alex and she shook her head, wandering what had just happened. Professor Giordano then announce, "Now, children, I have just jinxed this form, so that each name on it will come to a horrible horrible fate if they ever choose to tell anyone the secrets of this potion. Last time I saw her, she still ran around with a towel wrapped around her head, covering her face…” 'Well, that's that,' Alex thought and then listened intently on how to brew this top secret potion. Thinking that maybe she should write the ingredients down, Alex quickly changed her mind. Anyone could get a hold of it, and she'd be in biiig trouble. Instead, she memorized the short list and got a small fire going. Shen then measured out exactly 1 litre of water and poured it into her cauldron. Setting the cauldron over the fire just high enough so that it didn't get too hot, she waited until it started to simmer. Taking the small amount of Erupment fluid, Alex carefully added in two drops and began to stir. She checked her watch and slowly stirred the watery mixture for about 5 minutes. In immitation of Professor Giordano, Alex lifted up her spoon and daringly touched her tongue to the liquid. She nodded her head in approval, though she wasn't quite sure if it really did taste exactly the way it was supposed to. 'It does seem lemon-ish enough,' Alex thought, trying not to look as though she didn't know what she was doing. Alex squinted her eyes as she measured out as close to half a gram of the rainbow shavings as she possibly could. The colours were so bright and beautiful and she wanted some of her own, at least one day. Staring longingly at the miniscule amount of rainbow shavings she had measured out, she sprinkled them into her cauldron and began to stir again. The potion then took on the colours of the shavings in the same way that the professor's did. With a proud smile, Alex mentally congratulated herself for not screwing anything up yet. "Now for the last ingredient," she mumbled to herself as she took a single strand of Centaur hair. Staring quizzically at it, Alex made an attempt at grating the one strand. Not only did it look hard, but it was hard. After what looked to her like completely butchering it, she looked around at the rest of the class to see if anyone else was faring any better. Apparently she didn't do quite as bad as she thought, at least compared to everyone else. Adding this last ingredient to the cauldron Alex let the mixture simmer again on the fire. For good measure, she gave a brief little stir and extinguished her small fire to let the potion cool. After a few minutes of letting the newly made Omnitaste Potion sit, Alex took out two separate vials from her potions kit and poured some of the liquid into both. The one that was obviously for the teacher to be marked, she labled it with her name, house, and year. The second one, Alex filled as close to the top as she could and stoppered it. This one was a keeper! If there was a way she could frame this, she would. With a grin, Alex carefully set her very first potion into her kit. Before cleaning up the rest of her mess, Alex took her spoon and gave her creation a bit of a taste. It took a moment to register, but she noticed that it tasted like her father's home-made sourdough bread! She cleared away all her things with a broad smile on her face. If only she could let other people taste it too. Ah well! ((Sorry this is so long! I kinda got carried away, lol)) |

| Micro Hufflepuff First Year Micro walked into the room and almost walked back out, seeing the broad smile on the Professor's face. Uh-oh....hope she doesn't try to poison one of us.She thought to herself. She reentered the doorway and took a seat near the front, a daring move, she thought. Micro listened intensely as the Professor explained Snape's marvelous potion and watched carefully as she perfomed the first two steps of the directions. When the Professor produced the vial of rainbow shavings, Micro thought Austria, eh? She had to strongly resist the temptation of calling out "Sprechen Sie Deutsch?" When the presentation was done, Micro dragged her cauldron to an empty space and took a jug back to the spicket to fill it with an icy litre of water. Is it supposed to look brown? she said as she walked back to her cauldron, tripping in the process and almost dropping the mystery water. She poured the water into the cauldron and started a feeble flame underneath, prodding it and achieving nothing but a burnt sleeve. After her water was simmering and producing a lovely steam, Micro uncorked the bottle of clear fluid and added two drops of Erumpment fluid. Well, this seems easy enough, she thought as she began to stir the young potion. By the time the five minutes was up, she was huffing and stirring without much result. Micro cautiously dipped a spoon into the potion, and lifted it to her lips. Her face puckered as she swallowed a bit of it. Eww, doesn't taste like lemons to me she thought. Micro opened up the vial of rainbow shavings and measured a half gram on her scales, and watched as the beautiful substance slid into her cauldron. Micro enthusiastically stirred the concoction, humming O' Tannebaum somewhat loudly to herself. Micro, satisfied so far, turned around and finely grated a centaur hair and added it to the shimmering brew. Micro waited patiently for her potion to simmer once again, and leaned down to estinguish the flame. "AHHHHH!!!" she shrieked, jumping back up, shaking her arm until it stopped smoking. At least I managed to put out the flame, she said to herself in a somewhat agitated voice. Micro sat down on the cold floor, waiting for her potion to cool. She absentmindedly twiddled her wand, deciding to stop when she sent pink sparks out of the end. She looked hastily around and shoved it back into her pocket. Micro pulled herself to her feet and bent down over her cauldron. She cautiously poked a finger into her potion, laughing at the ripples that appeared. She carefully divided her potion into three vials and labeled one clearly with Micro....Hufflepuff First Year to turn into the Professor. She set it on the Professor's desk and went back to her cauldron. She unstoppered one of the remaining vials and raised it to her lips. "It better not still taste like lemons!" she said to nobody inparticular. Micro closed her eyes and almost instantly spit the potion back out, not knowing why it tasted like spinach, she didn't like spinach. "OOh....sorry!" she called to the shrieking girl far in front of her who was now covered with regurgitated potion. Micro turned a pale pink as she heard someone behind her exclaim, "Whoa! That went like twenty feet!" ooc: i enjoyed myself doing this, in case you cant tell... |

| Finally! We're actually going to do something! Those were the first words to pop into Ian's head. He got his ingredients and started to simmer his water. After he added the Erumpent fluid, he started to stir. He sighed to himself and thought, The stirring is the only problem. It's so boring! But the end result should be worth it. After about five minutes, he took a small spoonfull and tasted it. His lips puckered. Yep, that tastes like lemons, allright. Then he measured out his half a gram of rainbow shavings and added them, too. After stirring for another five minutes, he grabbed one small bottle and another large one from his potions kit. I'll save some in the big one for home, when dad makes peas. He took a sip from the other, smaller, bottle. WOW!!! I don't even know what it tastes like, but I like it! |

| Jazz trotted to her Potions class. Even though the Professor was stern and scary, she found that she enjoyed the lectures so far. She was a little tired of lugging her potions and cauldron around and never using them except as a parchment weight and quill holder. She took her seat, looking a little curiously at Professor Giordano, who was surprisingly cheerful. She had been a little cheerful in the last class too, and then...(the poor frog!) Yay! She removed her quills from her cauldron, blew the dust out of it, and got ready to take notes. Professor Snape’s invention...secret...taste what you want to taste...wow! sounds fun, and useful(especially if you were lost in the woods and only had grass or bugs to eat, Jazz thought to herself). She read over the printing on the form as it came around the room.
Looks like what father talked about signing for his work in the ministry, Jazz thought, as she scribbled her name down. As the silver thread was inhaled by her, she felt a little dizzy. She understood once Professor Giordano explained. She was a little disturbed by being jinxed, but shrugged it off. She eagerly picked up her quill, and wrote down the ingredients and directions, then set to work. It would have been fun to buddy up on the potion with one of her friends, but she was so excited about making something at last, she jumped right in. She poured the litre of pure water into her cauldron, and as it began to simmer, dropped the 2 drops of the Erumpent fluid in to it. She sniffed the steam as she stirred, and wrinkled her nose at the unpleasant scent. She was very careful, remembering the times she had watched her mom prepare potions in her work room at home. She was never allowed to say anything, or enter the room when her mom was working, so nothing could distract her. After the five minutes were up, she lightly tasted the sour lemon fluid on her spoon. So far so good! She collected her half gram of rainbow shavings. She was sooo tempted to keep it for herself, because she figured she could make some wonderful confetti with the beautiful substance. A glance at Professor Giordano made her decide to go on with her potion, and she added it in carefully, stirred and watched the sparkly colors glitter through the room. She grated her Centaur hair, her face a picture of concentration. Not daring to breath, lest she blow the fine powder away, she added it to her brew. She waited impatiently for the heat to bring it back to a simmer, moving it off the flame a little to stop it from boiling. After the required minute, she put the flame out, and waited for the cooling. Fiddling with her empty bottles, she dropped one, and looked around guiltily at the noise. She brushed it off, labeled each bottle(one with her name and class). As she poured her potion into the bottles, a few drops landed on her hand. With a shrug, she licked the drops off, and made a face. It tasted exactly like one of her mom’s tonics! Boy she must be more homesick than she thought! She quickly capped the bottles, popped one into her bag along with her cleaned and dried cauldron, and placed the other bottle on the Professor’s desk. With a last longing look at the rainbow shavings, she left the class. |

| Samantha Lee ran into the room almost late. SAVED BY MY MY.....UHH...ATHLETICNESS... She sat down on the nearest chair trying not to be noticable. Her view of the Professor was blocked with a huge GIGANTO black cauldron. Samantha was very scared for no reason. She tried to push the cauldron to the side a bit. She could barely hear the lecture. It seemed like the cauldron was sound-proof. The only thing Samantha heard was to make a POTION. She started getting anxious. Samantha went up to get the ingredients. She surely wasn't listening or the cauldron was really sound-proof becuase Samantha put in ALL the ingredients at the same time. She also didn't put in exactly the right amount. All of a sudden KABOOOOOM! Samantha was covered in red goopy stuff. She was curious so she took her index finger and stuck it into the gloop. She burned her mouth becuase she was sooo curious that she actually put it into her mouth. It tasted like bitter squash which she hated. UGHHH...... She, of course, spat it out as fast as she possibly could. Samantha ran up to the Professor asking if she could go wash herself off. As Samantha walked up to the Professor she was making a gloop trail. She looked at the Professor and saw that she nodded. Samantha ran out to the bathroom as fast as she could. A note to my grading assistant: That one gets extra points because so few students ever mess up and so spectacularly too! *pins homework to her fridge* |

| Kareena Sharma Gryffindor, First Year Kareena was so excited about the potion brewing. She sat down quitely and got out her parchment, quills and cauldron. The professor then began explaining and she said they had to sign a note. Sign? she said weirdly. When the note was passed she quickly signed it honestly....
SHe then quickly assed it onto the next person. When they all finished signing it I knew she had something important to say. Hmm a curse. She thought. Well i wont be telling anyone. she said in a low voice. She then placed her cauldron on her table. She then began making her potion. She was so excited about this you could see it. She poured 1 litre of water into the cauldron then mixing it well. She then added 4 drops of Erumpent fluid. She didn't know she only had to put 2 drops. Then a minute later....BANG......KABOOMMMM it exploded all over her and all the gu was covered on her. She felt a bit embarrased and was blushing. "Im sorry professor i didn't know you only had to put in 2 drops of Erumpent Fluid. She then started all over again. "Here i go again im not very good at this" she was saying out loud. She poured in 1 litre of water which she checked on the board. This time she added 2 drops of Erumpent fluid, which was correct seeing as she checked the board over and over again. She then stirred for 5 minutes making sure it was correct taste by tasting it and yes it tasted like lemon which she loved but she only took a litte sip. She then added ½ a gram of rainbow shaving which she took from the Professor desk then putted it back. It was glittery which she loved. She putted it in and stirred it a little bit. Just one more thing to add Kareena had said excitedly. She then added in only 1 grated Centuar Hair. She then stirred throughly and cehck from down to bottom on the board to she if she was correct. She then heated the cauldron and left it to simmer for a minute. She then left it to cool for a minute and took down the fire. When it was cooled down she took three bottles. 2 bottle for her and 1 bottle for the Professor to taste. She poured and and bottled it up. She kept her 2 in her bag. She then went up to the Professor and said.."Here you are Professor Giordano, I hope you like it, i followed all the steps.." She then left the classroom.... |

| Gwen walked into Potions, and to her surprise, saw Prof. Giordano looking quite happy. She was used to her serious moods, and strange fascinations with ingredients and all the nuances in between. But today...she was happy, and they were making a potion. She signed her name on the paper quickly, before turning back to the notes that were being written on the board. Guinevere wasn't sure how she should take this; so far, she had found the class slightly dull and a good bit of work, and she highly doubted her skills at making a potion. Frankly, she was gawky, and handling the delicate ingredients would be painstaking for her if she didn't want to mess up. Despite all odds, though, she was hoping she would do well, and she set to work. She set her cauldron down with a thunk, and poured the liter of water in, wincing as some splashed out. She quickly lit the flames, which seemed to have less power now that the environment was soggy and dripping, and waited for it to finally start simmering...or whatever it's supposed to do...she thought. Gwen handled the erumpent fluid a bit more carefully, only almost spilling some once the time came to add it. By the time she was done stirring it her arms were aching, and she felt uncomfortably warm from all the flames. The only thing she handled with true care were the rainbow shavings, which were blinding but the rarest of all of the ingredients. She measured her half gram slowly, finally deciding it was an OK amount and putting it in the potion, before adding the final engredient of a grated centaur hair. Gwen noticed her hair wasn't half as smooth as the professors, or many of the other students, for that matter. With a gulp, she turned the flames up again and watched the water slowly warm, sending flashes of light around the room. duVeau couldn't help but be fascinated by them; they reminded her of the crystals her mother hung in the windows at home...she blinked to clear her head, and realized the water was practically boiling. Blast! she thought, before turning the hungry flames all the way down and waving over her cauldron frantically. Well...no lasting damage done...I think....she thought while getting out two vials and scribbling her name and a false potion name on them: Boils Brew. Once that was finished, she sat back once again to watch the potion, this time with all it's glamour gone. It wasn't as pretty when it wasn't coming to a boil, anyway. She let her thoughts roam as usual while she waiting, musing how a person such as Professor Snape could have come up with a potion that contained rainbows and centaurs. After a few minutes, she filled the vial and hesitantly took a sip of the potion. In her mouth was the taste of apples and peaches; it was rather distorted, though, as if she were looking in a fun house mirror, and the tastes blended in and out of each other. At least apples and peaches don't clash she muttered. With a sigh, she brought the potion up to the Prof's desk and slipped the other in her black rucksack, packing up her things and heading out the door, ready to have some real food. |
| Posted by: Raven Blackwood Mar 21 2004, 08:55 PM |
| Raven Blackwood Gryffindor, 1st Year Raven Blackwood was so excited! 'We get to make a potion!!!!' She couldn't help but think. Happily, she signed the agreement, she had a feeling that there was more to it than just signing the parchment... But, she didn't care really, Dee and Ryo had always made sure that she kept their potions secret until they had a copyright on them. Raven waited patiently as the form was passed around the classroom. She watched in awe as the spell was preformed by their Professor. Then, as the silky silver strands flew around, she noted that she too, had inhaled one, and coughed slightly from the odd feeling it gave her. It was a jinx and she didn't want to mess with that besides, Raven Blackwood always kept a promise. It was unbecoming not to. Raven listed all of the ingrediants as well as the instructions down for her own use in a special ink that would only appear visable for her. (The ink was a present from her parents you see.) She then patiently began to measure out her ingrediants. This took Raven Blackwood the longest time to do, for she was a perfectionist as her parents had taught her to be careful measuring ingrediants to potions. She made sure that the Rainbow Shavings were precisely 1.5 grams, not one grain more, or less. She made sure that the water reached exactly 1Liter and that all of the one Centaur hair was put into the little dish she had sitting off to the side for it when being grated. She waited until the very nanosecond that the water started to simmer and added the two drops of Erumpent fluid, as she also turned her five minute hour glass upside down. She then began to stir watching her five- minute hour glass carefully. She then stopped stirring just as the last grain of sand left the top of the glass. She took her previously measured Rainbow shavings and dumped it into the mixture, being careful to get every grain of it she could out of the dish. Raven once again stirred the potion, making sure all of the Rainbow shavings dissolved into the rest of the potion. When she was sure that this was done, Raven picked up her dish of grated centaur hair and dumped it's contents into the mixture as well. Raven then was careful with her minute hour glass as she went ahead and reheated the mixture. Carefully making sure it didn't boil by tending to the tempurature of the cauldron. When the minute was up she took the potion off of the heat and let it cool. When the potion was finished, she looked carefully at it, before bottling some for later in that year. She was happy that she had written the instructions down in only an ink she could see, but, she still decided to put it into a magically locked drawer in the bottom of her trunk so no one would be able to grab it. |

| Adrianna Tordani First Year Gryffindor Adrianna sat down with the rest of her class, taking out parchment, a quill and some ink and getting ready to take yet another set of notes. Today however, the teacher had an announcement to make: “Today’s the day you’ve been waiting for. I think you’re well set for potions-brewing now. So I’ll let you loose on your cauldrons.” The rest of the class was happy, excited even, and so was Adrianna.. for about a millisecond. There had been a reason why she had never wanted to do any experiments in her previous school. This reason was that she didn't ever want to mess up, and in this case, their first potion, it would be disasterous to mess up! She took some deep breaths and began taking notes to calm herself. When the parchment came around to be signed, Adrianna signed it, getting the odd feeling that she was signing away her soul or something. She knew she wouldn't tell anyone, not if the punishment was that severe anyway so this wouldn't be an issue for her. Her issue was with the potion itself, more importantly with the simmering parts. The few times she had cooked things at home she had been a nervous wreck. She couldn't even boil water without asking someone if they thought it was boiling yet! Still, she had to do it so she wrote down everything she possibly could, then took a breath and began. She carefully measured out the water first, making sure to measure to the bottom of the miniscus on top as she had always been told. With exactly 1 litre of water in the cauldron, she lit the flame and let it heat up, or do whatever mysterious thing it was doing. After a short while, Adrianna decided that it was simmering after biting her nails for a bit, then added the two drops of Erumpent fluid. Upon doing so, she began stirring it and stirred for five minutes. Ladling a bit in a spoon, Adrianna tasted it. She was overjoyed when it tasted somewhat like lemon. *Doing good so far!! YAY!!* When her head didn't blow off her shoulders, she was even happier. She continued stirring it a bit more then headed for the rare rainbow shavings. Adrianna carefully measured out as close to a half a grams as she could get, being that a half a gram is like half of a paper clip's weight. She added them in and stirred some more. After a while she decided to add the grated hair. She took one and grated it carefully, trying to make sure she didn't have any big chunks. Adrianna then added it to the potion and took a deep breath. Now came the hard part, the simmering but not boiling part.. Adrianna heated the potion, not leaving it for too long, because she didn't want it to boil. Finally she just put out the fire and left it to cool, not wanting to leave it on any longer for fear of it boiling. Once it had cooled down, Adrianna took some and placed it in a vial, marking it with her name, year and house and then placed the aforementioned vial on the teacher's desk. She then took another deep breath and tried some herself, wondering what would happen. *I'm sure I didn't leave it on long enough!* The potion tasted like vanilla, but not very strongly, it seemed to waver in and out of other flavors as well. However, it wasn't bad, so Adrianna took three bottles of it with her to maybe use later. |

| OOC: I'm sorry this post is a little late- things in real life have been so hectic for me I just havn't had time for anything! Ava listened intently as Professor Giordano explained about the Omnitaste Potion. She was excited but nervous- their first attempt at potion making! She really wanted to do well, after all the preparation Professor Giordano had given them, she didn't want to let her down. When the contract was passed to her, she signed her name in her usual scrawl. She was sort of honoured that Professor Giordano would trust them all with a secret potion. Passing the parchment along, she waited to start her potion. When the ingredients were handed out, Ava began carefully brewing her potion. She measured out exactly one litre of water, and poured it into her cauldron. Lighting the flame under it, she waited until it was just beginning to boil when she added the two drops of Erumpent fluid. Taking a spoon, she dipped it into the cauldron and brought it back up to her mouth. Careful to taste only a minute amount, she noted a lemony flavour. 'Yes!' she thought, 'It's right so far!' When it was time to add the rainbow shavings, she carefully spooned a little onto her scale. It read 1.2 grams; too much. Putting a little back into the jar, she measured again- 0.3 grams. Adding just a tiny bit more, the scale finally read exactly 0.5 grams. She carefully poured the shimmering rainbow shavings into her cauldron. It glistened and shimmered every colour imaginable, giving Ava an almost dazed feeling as she stared into the cauldron's dazzling liquid depths. She finally dropped in the grated hair of a centaur, stirring gently so that the potion was evenly mixed. Turning the heat back up slightly under her cauldron, she waited until it was hot, but turned it off just before it boiled. Ava cooked a lot at home, and could usually tell when it was about to happen. When the poton cooled, she ladled some into a vial to be marked, and labeled it, Avalon Rose- Gryffindor, First Year. Onmitaste Potion. It shone and glimmered in the glass vial, and she looked at it admiringly. She couldn't help but be proud of herself- her first potion, and it appeared to have been done right! Or, she hoped it had, in any case. She turned the rainbow-y potion in to Professor Giordano, and smiled as she realized that the infamous Snape invented something pretty and shimmering. Sitting back down at her seat, she dipped a full spoon into the cooled liquid and braced herself. Hopefully she had done it right, and wouldn't be poisoned. It looked quite similar to the Professor's demonstration, but still... Raising the spoon to her lips, Ava poured it into her mouth. It was the most wonderful sensation; she tasted almond roca, turtles cheesecake, cream puffs, cherry pie, and strawberries with whipped cream. It was almost as if they were all in her mouth at the same time, yet she could taste each one distinctly, not as if they were blended together. All of her favourite desserts, in one spoonful of potion! It was amazing! Surely Professor Snape couldn't have been that bad, if he'd invented this! After a few more spoonfulls of the potion, the class was nearly over. Ava quickly cleaned up her cauldron and workspace, and gathered her things together. Potion making was as fascinating as she'd hoped and thought it would be, and she couldn't wait for the next potions she'd be able to concoct. She then remembered that she ought to be studying for final exams and trudged off to her dormitory to crack a few books. |

| Skyler Blake First Year Gryffindor Skyler grinned softly as she realised they were going to be brewing their first potions today. She’d been wondering when they were going to get to take a break from all of the theoretical work and, though she’d been pulling in decent grades, she was glad for the change of pace. As she listened to Professor Giordano’s continued explanation of the potion they were to make, she raised a brow. The Omnitaste Potion sounded interesting enough, but it wasn’t what had captured her attention. Rather, the name Professor Snape had. Skyler wasn’t old enough to have actually met the man while at Hogwarts, but she’d heard the occasional horror story. What could have possessed a man as … grouchy as him to invent something so … unpractical? Snapping out of her thoughts, Skyler absently scrawled her signature across the piece of parchment that had just landed in front of her, studying it just enough beforehand to realise it was a magical contract protecting the secrecy of the potion. As she was one of the last to sign, it was only a few minutes after she’d signed that the Professor muttered something under her breath and Skyler found herself breathing in a thread of silky magic. Sitting upright, Skyler listened intently to the Professor’s demonstration of brewing the potion and, before she knew it, the entire class was scrambling around the room like wild Hippogryffs. Smiling slightly, Skyler glanced down at the notes she’d taken and set up her cauldron before selecting a measuring jug and making her way over to the tap. Careful to only take exactly one litre of water – Skyler wanted her first potion to be done right – she made her way back to her cauldron, and poured the liquid in, being careful not to spill. Before she lit the fire, Skyler glanced around the class and, realising that most were still waiting with their Erumpent fluid for their water to start simmering, she decided to get the other ingredients first. She returned to her workplace roughly five minutes later with exactly half a gram of rainbow shavings, one centaur hair and a small beaker of Erumpent fluid. Smiling, she set them out in the order they needed to be added, and then started the small fire beneath her cauldron. Relaxing slightly, the young Gryffindor didn’t take her attention from the cauldron full of water as it grew steadily hotter, drumming her fingers against the table top in a staccato rhythm as she started to rethink the order in which she’d done things. Maybe she should have waited until now to get the ingredients … then she wouldn’t be sitting around doing nothing. Before she could contemplate this much further, Skyler realised that the water was starting to simmer. With an excited grin, she picked up the beaker of Erumpent fluid and a small dropper. Carefully the brunette extracted some of the fluid and, holding it above the cauldron, squeezed out exactly two drops, stirring as she did so. A sudden KABOOM from her left made Skyler jump in fright and she squeaked, squeezing the rest of the Erumpent fluid contained in the dropper into the potion as well. “Oh no!” She cried, still stirring as she tried to figure out if she needed to start over. Deciding that she’d see after she’d tasted the potion, she continued to stir for what she estimated to be five minutes. Tentatively, Skyler took one of the spoons that had been distributed, and scooped up a small amount of the potion. Letting her tongue flick against a small amount of the potion, Skyler’s face scrunched up at the sour taste. Ugh! Definitely lemon! Deciding not to linger on whether or not the strong lemony taste was as strong as it was because of the excess Erumpent fluid, Skyler tipped the rainbow shavings into the potion and, despite the taste that seemed to be clinging to her tongue, she couldn’t help but smile at the colours running through her potion. “Pretty.” She noted, flushing slightly as she realised she’d spoken aloud. Skyler continued to stir on automatic, watching the pretty colours intently as she tried to figure out just when it would count as ‘stirred thoroughly’. Settling for just stirring for as long as Professor Giordano did, Skyler was soon eyeing the centaur hair dubiously. She copied the Professor’s earlier actions tentatively, and it was only some very fancy manouvering that stopped her from cutting her hand open as she grated the centaur’s hair over the cauldron. That done, Skyler once again turned up the fire underneath the cauldron and sat back, waiting for it to start simmering again. She didn’t have long to wait, and she immediately extinguished the fire, sitting back as she waited for the potion to cool. Once again, it took less time than she thought it would have, though she put it down to the coolness of the dungeons. Carefully, she filled three vials with the potion and, packing two away into her bag, she labelled one with her name and deposited it on the Professor’s desk just in case she wanted to grade their efforts. Then Skyler returned to her workplace and began to clear away, waiting for the Professor to dismiss the class. |

| Dusky Pidlerson 1st Year Hufflepuff Dusky signed the list without a moment's hesitation. Not so much because she particularly wanted to make the potion - she was terrible at practical things like that, always had been... - but she definitely wanted to get the class over and done with. Then she joined the class open-eyed as they were warned about the consequences of ignoring the privacy. She stroked her chin thoughtfully. "It's a good thing I'd never DREAM of telling," she whispered to her silvan-haired neighbour. Silver grinned at her excitedly and whispered about her delight in finally being able to mix a potion! Dusky looked at her with pursed lips, dubious, but eventually smiled, some of the excitement rubbing off in her. CLANG! She pulled her cauldron out of her pack and dropped it on the table, blushing as people turned to stare at her angrily. "Sorry...sorry," she whispered loudly. She turned to Silver. "What did she say she needed?" Her friend sighed and pointed her to the board. "Riiiight....1 litre of water....okay...hm..." She walked to the sink and grabbed a measuring beaker. "1...litre..." She walked back to the bench and put it on the bench, before climbing to stand on her seat so she could see over the lid of the cauldron. "Gently...gently...whoops!" Most of the water entered the cauldron, but she had to make a second trip to add 100ml. "Oh! The heat!" Dusky quickly turned onto the heat, and stood back, watching her water start to heat up. Dusky turned her head to see Silver head to the front of the classroom. Ingredients! She quickly rushed up after her friend, and waited her turn with the rainbow shavings...Half a gram...she took out a tiny teaspoon and filled it, placing the shavings on a set of excessively precise scales on the teacher's desk. One gram... Dusky carefully spooned aside half of it, and added the rest back to the vial. And one hair of centaur. She reached in cheerfully, taking the hair. This wasn't so hard! She returned to the cauldron and quickly lowered her ingredients, seeing that the potion was well and truly simmering now. Two drops of Erumpent fluid... She reached into her potions kit and pulled out the Erumpent fluid as well as an eyedropper. Drip. Drip. She grinned and picked up a spoon, stirring the potion happily. She started whistling happily to herself, not watching the clock too specifically until Silver nudged her. "It's been five minutes," she whispered and Dusky gasped. "Oh! Right!" There wasn't time to taste the potion, so she moved on, carefully sprinkling her rainbow flakes over it. "Oh, so pretty," she cooed, looking at the darling mixture as it swirled in a kaleidoscope of colour. She smiled, happy that the potion seemed to be working properly so far. She lifted the hair from the centaur carefully and dropped it into the potion. She turned up the heat slightly, permitting it to simmer once more. A minute later, she put out the fire and waited patiently for it to cool down. Finally! She poured the mixture into her bottle and rose it to her lips "Arrghkle!" She squealed. "It tastes like chicken manure! I don't want to eat that!" Her friends nearby looked at her with curious expressions on their faces, and Silver nudged her perfect flask towards her. Dusky tasted it, and her eyes glazed over. Spaghetti, tomato sauce...herbs...oh the herbs! And the cheese! And mince! Why didn't hers taste like that? She frowned and stared at her potion, and at the blackboard. And then she saw it - one grated centaur hair. Grated, Dusky, grated. Hefty groans. |
