Tier One - Game 2

Finally, everything was ready. Well as ready as could be for something like this, she thought as she entered the Dueling Club. There were a lot of little details to take care of but the hard part was behind her now.

A banner hung on the wall to the right, proudly displaying 2nd Annual Dueling Club Tournament. Platforms were all freshly cleaned and a couple of refreshment tables were loaded with treats for the Officiators and the duelists.

Kalina doubled checked to make sure the Medicine Cabinet had been properly stocked. One glance was all it took. Everything was neatly arranged in multiple quantities. Next she walked over to a table laden with some fluffy white towels and a couple of blankets. She wondered if she the water spells would be as popular this year as last. Well time would tell. She glanced down at her watch. It was time to start.

Kalina walked to the entrance and greeted each student as they walked through the door. For this first round, everyone would be dueling at the same time. With her trusty clipboard in hand she checked off names and told them which Platform to go to. She explained to them also that once both opponents were ready a Dueling Officiator would come by to start them off.

Pale-faced, Sariss entered the chambers of the Duelling Club. She was prone to shaking with nervousness when something like this lay ahead of her. Another tournament. This would be stressful. Only time would tell if her nerves could stand the pressure of if she'd have to concede at some point. Moving on our being kicked out in the first duel already... Both options had their advantages and disadvantages. But... well... she found she actually wanted to proceed to the next round...

Kalina Match, the Hufflepuff that had already taken care of the last tournament was busily bustling around and assigning platforms to everyone, scribbling onto her clipboard every now and then. Sariss was so nervous that she could barely speak, so she settled for a faint 'hi' and then climbed onto the platform. Gulping, she waited for her opponent to arrive. Who could tell how her chances were what with the duelling tournament rules being so different from the normal ones? Sariss was--so she found--reasonably worried.

Ellie entered the room of the dueling tournament, gulping slightly when she saw her future opponent already there. She had no idea how exactly she’d managed to get into the part of the tournament that held the stronger duelers, but she had, and now she’d be up against some of the strongest duelers of the school. If she even managed to survive the first round that was. She’d never dueled Sariss before, but the older Slytherin was bound to have loads more spells than she did, even though the special tournament rules evened out the match a bit.

Not being able to get out a word, she nodded silently to Kalina who had pointed her to the platform. When she finally stood opposite Sariss, she did her best to remain at least the semblance of friendliness and managed to say “Hi, I’m Ellie”, though it was in a rather higher voice than usual. She dug into her pocket to find her wand so that the officiators could start the duel whenever they were ready, clinging to the piece of wood for dear life. She would usually have tried to force a smile in a situation like this, but she thought that if she concentrated on anything but the duel that lay ahead she’d burst from the strain. At the very least she would pass out from nervousness if she had one more thing to worry about.

Professor Trimble approached the platform with a reassuring smile. "Congratulations on making it into the tournament, Miss Ravon and Miss Benwick. The fact that you're here at all testifies that you're among the best duellers in the school. Just relax and do you're best. I'm sure you'll make your houses proud no matter what the outcome."

"Now lets get this thing underway, shall we?" He waited a moment for the girls to ready themselves. "Alright...Begin!"

OOC: Just a reminder that the time limits are firm. If you wait over 48 hours to post after your partner, you'll lose (even if you post before the officiators declares it).

As soon as the signal to begin the duel was given, Sariss jumped into attacking stance and chanted, “Aspergo!” Even though her opponent seemed like not much of a challenge to the inexperienced eye, Sariss knew better than to underestimate the skill of Eleanor. Tournaments were always a little different from the usual every-day duel in the chamber.

Sariss would have to concentrate. She had been losing many a duel recently because she had lost her concentration for some reason or other. She hated it when she was unsettled by the smallest and most innocent remark about slightly tender subjects.

The jet of water swooshed towards Eleanor, and Sariss could still not tell whether or not the girl would bring up her wand in time to block it…

Ellie gulped when the duel was started, and Sariss immediately cast her first spell. She had been hoping to get first blood, knowing that it would be a big advantage. Well, there was nothing to be done about that now. “Obsidio!” she shouted, conjuring up the silver mist she used to block opposing spells. She knew that Sariss had much stronger spells and didn’t want to waste a dodge. “Terroris!” she chanted, her fear having disappeared with her first spell. The worst thing that could happen was that she’d lose, right?

Sariss was nervously bouncing on her heels when Eleanor blocked her pretty water charm easily. Oy... Nervous, nervous, nervous... In fact, Sariss was so nervous that her voice didn't want to cooperate when she wanted to block the spell that Eleanor had hurtled towards her. And who would be surprised? In addition to the nervousness, Sariss had a fear of the coward charm... and was now getting hit with it. How frighteningly unpleasant that was...

Now she was in that abysmal state again in which she'd be scared to get hurt by a spell and also afraid to hurt someone. Well, since at the moment, it was not she who was being targetted, the latter was her problem. Thankfully, she knew a spell that would not hurt the little Ravenclaw on the other side of the platform.

"Expelliarmus?" It sounded more like a question than an incantation, but it worked just the same.

Ellie flinched slightly when Sariss got hit by the spell. Last time that had happened Lian had been a crying heap on the platform afterwards and it hadn’t been a pleasant occasion for either of them. Sariss seemed to be doing better, thankfully, so she turned her attention back to the spell heading for her. It was a stronger version of her own disarming spell, and another one she’d have to add to her ?must learn soon? List. That list was getting way too long.

“Obsidio” she said, not having much of a choice but to block the spell if she didn’t want to lose the duel quicker than she’d anticipated.

“Oblima” she added, hoping that a little mud would take her one step further towards maybe winning the duel. She had no idea who was doing better at the moment, having never been in this kind of situation before. What she did know was that her power was waning faster than it ever had before in a duel.

Alright... Sariss took a deep breath so as to try and calm down her nerves. Everything was well... Everything was fine... Everything was... "Meep! Obsidio!" A gigantic, huge, nasty blob of mud had been hurtled in her direction and she had quickly blocked it. It was truly odd that the coward charm didn't make her overly shaky when a spell was heading for her. The 'meep!' was her standard reaction to a big spell...

The casting of the next spell would be a little more difficult... but... if she'd just try and disarm Eleanor again, that would be good. The thought didn't frighten Sariss as much as any other. The Disarming Spell never hurt anyone. Sariss nodded shakily to herself and tried to make her voice sound a little firmer than it had been the last time that she cast a spell.

"Expelliarmus," she pronounced it carefully and gave her wand the tiniest of flicks (She didn't want to poke her own eye out!)

Edit because I not only can't count (see post above wink.gif), but also can't spell D-I-S-A-R-M-I-N-G correctly anymore lol

((That can happen to the best of us sometimes laugh.gif ))

Sariss seemed slightly scared of the semi-big spell she’d sent, but Ellie was relieved to see that the older girl was still handling things perfectly well. She herself wasn’t doing quite as well. Maybe she should have dodged that first spell and then she’d still have more energy left. Oh well, there was no way to undo that now, and she had to block the spell that was racing at her yet again. “Obsidio!” she shouted, thinking about what to do next. Well, if Sariss could get all repetitive with her spell choices, so could she. “Oblima” she said, sending another nice big blob of mud across the platform.

Sariss's strategy seemed to work. Even though it was draining for herself, it was just as draining for Eleanor, and that was a good thing. Sariss didn't know how long she'd last, shaky and frightened as she was, if she gave Eleanor only a single second of rest. This duel needed to be ended quickly, so that Sariss could have Professor Trimble fix her up again. She could already see herself scuttle up to him despite how scared she was (asking a professor for help was currently one of the fears that were strongest in her--aside from causing a spell to backfire on her or going somehow wrong and hurtling at someone who wasn't supposed to be involved... or what if her spells were too strong? Well, suffice it to say that Sariss would be worrying about the flies on the walls if there were any...)

SMACK! Sariss suddenly found herself covered in mud from head to toe. As she wiped the gooey substance out of her face (thankfully, nothing got in her eyes, this time), it became clear to her that a wand in Eleanor's hands was something that shouldn't be allowed.

She spluttered, spitting out some mud (thankfully clean mud, if there was anything like 'clean' mud at all), and then chanted, "Expelliarmus!" Yes, again, because she didn't feel quite as terrified when she cast that one.

Ellie knew what was going to happen before Sariss as much as moved a finger. It would have been stupid to think that such an experienced dueler would make a mistake and lose the duel right at the end. Still, she was a bit disappointed, knowing that if she'd managed to get first blood or used a different tactic at the beginning of the match she would have stood a chance. Oh well, there was always next year, and she'd be able to put more time into the preparations for the next round of the themed tournament now.

Releasing her wand as the disarming spell hit, she walked over to sariss to collect it again and congratulate her on the victory. She'd never been a bad loser and that wasn't a habit she was going to start now. "Nice duel Sariss. We'll have to have a regular one one of these days, though I'm sure you'll squash me in that one." With a small bw, she jumped off the platform and decided to watch some of the other duels. It seemed that theirs had been pretty quick as nobody else had finished yet.

Sariss wins!

Sariss smiled, even though she was still covered in mud. "Great duel, Eleanor. I really thought you had me in the beginning. I had to really strategise! So exciting!" she exclaimed happily and reached out to shake hands with Eleanor--before she noticed that the girl would probably not want to get her hands dirty... which she would anyway.

"Um..." Sariss fidgeted as she handed the wand back to Eleanor. "Sorry 'bout that... All muddy... Heh... I need a bath, I guess..." Or a well-aimed Shower Charm while we're at it.

"Excellent duel, ladies! Unfortunately, only one of you can move on to the second round and that's Miss Ravon. Congratulations."

Poor Sariss still looked a little skittish. Best he cancel the coward charm and put her back in her right mind. "Finite Incantatum. There you go. Good luck in your next duel."
