Cave Story (Doukutsu Monogatari)

Pardon me if I sound like I'm gushing here. Commence sparkling review.
Maybe you're not into the indie gaming scene, but Cave Story is definitely worth a look. Its addicting gameplay is practically enough on its own, but it also has an incredibly engaging plot following the fate of an amnesiac robot soldier, a mysterious floating island, and an ancient demonic crown of power fallen into the wrong hands. I have to confess to being a bit of a geek in this aspect: the translation is masterfully done. You can't even tell it's a fan translation; I was dumbstruck at how well the conversion went from Japanese to english. Even more amazing is the fact that the entire game, start to finish, was coded, drawn, and written by one person. The graphics and sound are very old-timey, so if you're into classic games you'll feel right at home; they may be charming even if you're not. The gameplay itself is reminiscent of the lovechild of Castlevania and Metroid. The plot is just as labyrinthine and wrought with secrets as the game's world itself; you have to play through at LEAST twice to see all the plot. If you're into spoilers, you can look into the secrets to activating Hard Mode on the site I linked; Hard Mode is required to see all the plot, as well as the real final boss and ending.
The site I linked here is technically a fansite, but the download is available there. I HIGHLY reccomend this game. The program itself is only 4 or 5 megabytes, and naturally it's completely free. Give it a try; make this gaming geek happy. XP
