Table Tennis Club Championships 2005

The Players: (from left top) Deepak, Dennis, Luu, Teikyee, Dave, Benny, Gajan, Rory, Richard,
Woodrow, Phil, Christian (absent Leon and Matt)

The year: 2005.
The date: 4th of July
The event: 3rd Annual Adelaide University Table Tennis Club Championship.

On a cold winter day 14 of Adelaide's brave ping pong players converged on the cleverly named "games" room in level 5 of the Union Building at Adelaide University for the purpose of determining whose table tennis technique is the most powerful. The champions of previous year's tournaments were absent with even our admired president, (one of our clubs most distinguished Andrews), abroad. The top positions were waiting to be grasped by the day's competitors.
For the first time in the club's 8 year history, following the tournament, when a few more members rocked up, a doubles competition was held.

We can be heroes

SINGLES

Tournament format:
The tournament had 2 rounds. The first, round robin, with 2 groups of five players and one group of 4. Round 2 was knock out with the first and second place getters from round 1 in each group proceeding as well as the 3rd place getter from the 5 person groups.
Games were best of 5 sets up to 11 points each.

3 players known for their bat swinging talents, Dennis, Christian, and Woodroe, were seeded to each start in different groups.

ROUND 1

Group 1: Dennis Dominatrix

In motion
Matt managed to win one set from the dynamic Gajan caught here in mid-stroke.
Dennis easily crushed opposition in his group without losing a set.
Dominatrix backhand
Leon V Matt
Matt defeated Leon 3-1 but this was not enough to get him to round 2.

GROUP 1 Standings
Dennis cruises through round one. Gajan earns his spot in the next stage.

Group 2: Grudge Group

Nice fight!
Veterans Deepak and Teikyee face off again as they did last year. Again Teikyee is the victor but this is his only win in a tough group.
Woodroe showed his class with a straight sets victory over experienced campaigner Phil. All other challangers in the first round met a similar fate against him.
forehand slice
Open mouth style #1
Benny bashed Teikyee and Deepak. He narrowly lost to Phil but qualified for the next round coming third in his group.

GROUP 2 Standings
Unsurprisingly, the results developed.

Group 3: A walk in the park

Dave's experience in AU competitions since 2003 helped him in his victory over Rory 3-1.
open mouth shot
Off balance
Richard had a tough start against Christian and had another tough match here against Dave.
Lu shows his trademark backhand slice which won him one set against Rory. Rory held his own, whatever that means, against Luu and Richard to claim 3rd place.
Superb action shot

GROUP 3 Standings
Christian didn't drop a set. Dave claimed second with Rory in third.
