Social Studies Independent Study Guidelines

Below is a list of assignments for the independent study.

.25 credit = 3 assignments

.50 credit = 6 assignments

.75 credit = 9 assignments

1.0 credit = 12 assignments

You may choose from the list. Please place a cover sheet on top of all your work that you turn in. Please record the credit you hope to achieve, your name, date, numbers done.

#1 Attend a town meeting in your community…gather an agenda from the evening…write a one page description of the community

Write a one page description of a local problem (discuss the problem, present opposing sides of the argument, recommend resolutions)write a one page personal opinion

#2 View 3 historical movies…get approval first…ask yourself (what is history?) For each movie: Record a one-page summary of the movie. Record a one-page synopsis of the real historical event. Describe the impact of the event on society. 1 page Give a 1 page personal opinion of the events that took place.

#3 Write 3 biographies.

You may select any historical person having a major influence on society. Each biography must be 3 pages in length.(Personal, Early Life, Career, Family, Schooling, Significance are some suggestions to report on)

#4Philosophers

List 5 philosophers and record a one page report on each one. For example, John Locke…tell me a text they had written, Two Treatises on Civil Government. Explain their main ideas of the text. Compare their idea to another philosopher. Give your personal opinion. Identify a famous quote from this person.

#5 Record a three-page essay explaining who your favorite president & justify it five times. Elaborate each justification into a paragraph. Including the intro & conclusion will equal 7 paragraphs.

#6 Collect a total of 15 (international, national, or local) news articles from magazines or newspapers.

Record your personal opinion on the article. Half Page

#7 Describe the most interesting battle (any world conflict) Explain the weapon use, purpose of…1 prominent person, outcome.

Rrport should equal 3 pages.

#8 Define an American. Describe the history of the U. S. flag. Answer: Would you be willing to die for your country? Report should equal 2 pages.

#9 Rank the top 20 people from the 20th Century. A paragraph explaining their significance…should equal 4 pages.

#10 Identify the 10 most important inventions of man. A paragraph explaining their significance…should equal 4 pages…develop more explanation than people.

#11 Compare/Contrast any two cities in the world. Population, geography, economy, history & role in its country. Personal opinion- 5 pages

#12 List 5 songs that make reference to history…Record its lyrics…describe the historical event in half page. Do you like/ dislike the song? Why? Why not?
