This independent study requires independent research, calculations ,and a legible report to be turned in for credit to be issued.

THE BACKGROUND FOR THE RESEARCH

This project will require you to calculate volume, surface area, taxes, cost of materials, and total cost.

You have just won a house in a sweepstakes contest. Unfortunately, after paying taxes on the amount the house is worth, you still need to complete much of the interior. Attached is the floor plan for your house. You will be required to calculate the following:

1. Floor area and area of walls for each room (distance from floor to ceiling is 7 foot, 8 inches).

2. The cost of carpeting all bedrooms, hallways, living room, and dining room. Carpet is sold in square yards, so conversion from square to square yards must be shown. Included in your report should be advertisements from newspapers or direct mail indicating the carpet you have chosen as well as price. Remember to calculate tax, if applicable. You may choose an area rug for rooms and all costs must be presented in your report. Justify your choice of carpet in terms of cost and durability.

3. The cost of painting all walls and ceilings in the house. Include all costs of paint, brushes, etc. Justify your choice of paint by cost versus coverage and durability. Advertisements for the paint you have chosen must be included. Since one does not want a wet garage, include this in your painting by choosing a waterproof paint. Again, include all applicable taxes.

4. The cost of furnishing the house and all kitchen appliances. Include proof of costs for all objects including taxes. Justify for choices.

5. Assume that your home is assessed at $132,000. Your school tax is 102 mills. Calculate your school district tax for the year. Research to understand how the tax is calculated and what amount is used in the calculation of the tax.

1. Assume that this home is in Allegheny County.

2. All purchases are made in Allegheny County.

3. You will perform the labor yourself.

FINAL REPORT

Your final report must include all calculations and conversions. The cost of all purchases includes all applicable taxes. Newspaper advertisements, or catalog ads for materials and appliances must be attached. This project must be presented in a logical and legible manner. Justifications for all purchases must be included.
