The Powers of the Three: Elrond, Gandalf and Galadriel
 |
| The holders of the three Elven Rings, the wielders of the three most powerful magics in Middle Earth, and the counselors and helpers of all who work for good, Gandalf, Elrond and Galadriel are famous names from Tolkien's story. Gandalf the Grey is the leader of the Fellowship, the wizard who loses his life in Moria in defense of the Ringbearer and is reborn as the White Rider, defender of good and bringer of doom to the forces of evil. Galadriel, the mysterious sorceress of the mythical woods of Lothlorien, reads minds and tells the future. She is the mother of Celebrian, mother of Arwen. Elrond is Arwen's father and the keeper of the stronghold of Rivendell, the Last Homely House in Middle Earth. He summons the Council which decides the fate of Sauron's One Ring. Together these three people keep the order of Middle Earth and assure the safety and guidance of most of the characters. |

Gandalf is the only one of the Three whom the readers get to know intimately, at least as far as he lets anyone in. He is described as being very close, keeping his thoughts to himself and always having a greater design in mind when he acts. He has great power both of magic and of personality, and can find a way out of any tight situation. He is the foil to Saruman, the evil wizard corrupted by power and greed, because Gandalf only wishes for the destruction of evil and the triumph of good. He bears Varya, the Ring of Fire, "mightiest of the Three." It was given to him by Cirdan when he became the shipwright of the Havens and could no longer stay in Middle-Earth. |
| Having a name meaning "Lady of Light," Galadriel is an unknown figure to almost all the mortals of Middle-Earth. She is so shrouded in myth and mystery that it is eerie for the mortals of the Fellowship to meet her. She reveals to Frodo that she is the bearer of Nenya, the Ring of Adamant, and tells him that to bear a Ring of power is to be alone. The most powerful of the Elves still on Middle-Earth, Galadriel is the equivalent to the High Queen. She too works toward the destruction of Sauron, helping Gandalf when he is reborn by giving him healing and a new staff. Eomer thinks the three runners have been bewitched when they mention they have seen her, but those who have been in her presence know that she is very real, and full of the magic of the Elves.

Elrond is the son of Earendil, the standard-bearer of Gil-Galad of Elven lore. He is called Elrond Halfelven because his mother was a mortal woman. His children have the benefits of immortality while he stays in Middle-Earth, but when he departs for the havens they must go with him, or age and die as mortals. Elrond takes a more active role in the fate of Middle-Earth than Galadriel does, but he still believes that the race of Men will ultimately fail in preserving the old ways of life, because as he says in the movie, Men are weak. Elrond bears Vilya, Gil-Galad's Ring of Water, given him by the Eldar when he died.
