ABOUT THE NIGHT'S WATCH
The Night's Watch
is dying. Our strength is less than a thousand now. Six hundred here, two
hundred in the Shadow Tower, even fewer at Eastwatch, and a scant third of those
fighting men. The Wall is a hundred leagues long.
Think on that. Should an attack come, I have three men to defend each mile of wall."
- Lord Commander Mormont of the Night's Watch
The Night's Watch is the first and last defense against the unknown beyond the Wall.
The Wall is just what it is, a huge, immense wall of ice that is a hundred leagues long, starting
from the Bay of Ice to the west, and ends in the east, reaching the Bay of Seals.
The Wall was built by the First Men, thousands of years ago,
to keep out the Others, a mysterious race that hates all living things. Not
much is known about the Others, as encounters with them has not been recorded
for hundreds of years, and thus people have forgotten why the Wall is there: To
defend the realms of Westeros from the unexplored north.
The Night's Watch consists of men from all sorts of life: Outlaw, rapists, debtors, killers,
thieves, lords, knights, soldiers, children. Once a man take the black, his past
is forgotten. All other options are closed off forever, and his only option is
to serve the black until his death.
Once, the Night's Watch numbered many, with hundreds of
forts along the Wall keeping an eye northwards for any sign of trouble. The
Night's Watch has gone in decline with the roll of years, the threat from the
north forgotten by people in the realms -the stories of the Others and monsters
have passed into fairy tales.
The longest summer on record has finally ended. The long
summer lasted nine years, and now winter is coming.
The old magic, thought long gone, is coming back.
The Others, too, are coming back. The Wall has been
left in disrepair for hundreds of years. Westeros is in the middle of civil wars
between rival kings fighting for the Iron Throne. The Night's Watch has never
been vulnerable, with only three forts manned on the Wall.
These forts are:
Castle Black, the main fort of the Night's Watch, is located in the middle of the Wall,
and is connected to the kingsroad south to Winterfell, the castle of House Stark.
Shadow Tower, to the west of Castle Black, near the Bay of Ice.
Eastwatch, to the east of Castle Black, near the Bay of Seals.
The nearby village is Mole's Town, half a league south along the kingsroad.
