Comp 14

CONCEPTS

I have learned a lot in COMP 14.  This is my third online class and I love it.  This course has allowed me to experience web page design & creating a web site. I really enjoyed learning how to use HTML. I can be as creative or dull as I want. Web page design & creating web sites are definitely something that I plan to pursue in the near future. Using HTML no longer seems impossible.  It was cool to write the form and then view it in a web browser. I would look at my form and think "wow, I created this".  One thing that I really love is that the information is available 24/7. I have a busy schedule and I am glad that I can now do research late at night after I get home from work.

Web pages consist of several design elements, including headings, paragraphs, horizontal rules, lists, images, backgrounds, bookmarks, links, special characters, tables, and frames. The relationship among these elements on the screen is called layout. When you create a Web page, you should plan its layout so your content is presented with good balance. Think of dividing the screen into regions, of which some will be pictorial, with others consisting of blocks of text. You must also think about how the user will interact with your screen, and include the appropriate navigational buttons and hypertext links. Targets provide the user with a quick way to jump around among the various topics in your Web page. Links are the most essential element in Web design, because links create webs. Without links, there would be no webs! Links can be textual or pictorial. Any word or picture on the screen can be linked to any resource on the Web.  HTML stands for HyperText Markup Language. It is not a programming language but a way of tagging text to create web pages that can be viewed using a web browser. It is important that web pages be easy to use. Be consistent. If you adopt navigational icons, use them consistently throughout your Web site. If you use hypertext navigation, be consistent in how you word the directions.

Through this course I have learned many different ways to search for information. Search engines are wonderful tools have opened up a whole world of information for me. The key to unleashing the research potential of the Internet is to know how to use the search engines. I learned how to search subject-oriented directories that organize material according to topic & how to use full-text keyword searching that enabled me to find articles containing specific words or phrases in documents mounted on the Web.  I even learned how to search Usenet newsgroups, which provide a rich source of information about current research in many fields.  Overall, I would have to say that this class has had an exciting effect on my life. The experience has been difficult at times, but the accomplishments overshadow the difficulties. I would recommend this class to anyone who is interested in any computer career, or someone who just enjoys surfing the net. As for how these concepts will impact my career I really don’t know. I may decide to become a Webmaster.
