Mi’kmaq Independent Project- Sex, Sexuality, and Gender Roles Amongst the Mi’kmaq

Sexuality, gender, and the ways different societies interpret them have always fascinated me. When my MKS10 teacher gave me the opportunity to choose any topic I wanted for my independent study I jumped at the chance to research it, probably thinking something along the lines of: “Ooh, I get to make a website about cultural gender bending and get credit for doing so! Score!”

Yes, I am that deep.

The following is the product of long days and nights spent before the computer, trying desperately to scrounge up enough information to fill a seven-page research paper, wondering why I couldn’t just have done the construction of snowshoes or how to shoot a moose instead. In the end a good deal of it is only my own musings. You’ll have to come up with your own ideas about what Mi’kmaq cultural attitudes were and are towards everything mentioned here, and that’s okay- because that’s the point anyway.

Ladies, gentlemen, and flamboyant gentlemen, I present: My project!
