JUAKALI * FOREIGN FAMILIAR *
Hailing from the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago
JUAKALI was born John Edward Claudius Lashley
Junior to working class parents John & Diana Lashley.
He is the second of four boys. After entering and winning his
first visual art competition at the age of 10, it gave him the
drive and confidence to continue drawing, writing and performing.
At the age of 15, he became a member of the dance troop known as
"Spoil Brattz", who went on to win several national competitions
in and around his native isle leading to opening performances for
internationally known artists Boyz II Men, Shabba Ranks, TLC,
and Queen Latifah among others.

JUAKALI - BIOGRAPHY
After completing high school at Queen's Royal College in 1993,
he along with his nuclear family migrated to the United States.
He entered Brooklyn's Pratt Institute in Spring 1994 to pursue a degree in Architecture.
His first public event in the United States was an open mic in which he
mesmerized the crowd with his accent in grievance of experiencing snow for the first time.
As a member of S2L, he had spotlight performances with
Danny Glover, Ruby Dee, Sonia Sanchez, Mutaburuka, Mos Def,
The Pharcyde and headlined such prominent venues like the Tishman Auditorium,
Joe's Pub, Sounds Of Brazil (SOBs) and BAM café.
He went on to produce two albums and a music documentary:
'say word' released in 1999, 'Babble On' released in 2004 and
'Urban Rhapsody' which continues to be screened at Domestic and International Film Festivals.

In 2005 he decided to finally explore his voice as a solo artist under the moniker
JUAKALI a Ki-Swahili term given a person who can make something out of nothing.
Combining the voice of his island upbringing with
electronically made musical landscapes of the urban environments
he has traveled and currently resides in, his Ragga Music is hip hop, drum n base and world music
genres coupled with the lyrical social consciousness of Classic Roots Reggae.
