"There are lots of boys out there starving for heavy rock music" Ronni Le Tekrø states, hoping that his long awaited
collaboration with fellow guitar virrtuoso Terje Rypdal can satisfy as many of these people as possible. The two
internationally renowned guitar players have finally been able to work the recording of an album into their tight
schedules.
RYPDAL & TEKRØ has become a colorful album. The meeting of these extraordinary musicians has resulted in a large
musical canvas, the layers painted having beeen sketchy yet focused. It was recorded quickly and with intense
passion, during a couple of outstretched weekends consisting of plenty of beers, far less sleep and a common musical
understanding.
"It is kind of off-beat, this album" Tekrø laughs. This record is really out there. The guy doing the mix,
(acclaimed Norwegian producer Bjørn Nessjø), did not understand very much of it at the time he got involved with this
project. He just kept asking "what is it you´re trying to get across here?", and I answered with a simple "Zappa".
This album is supposed to be a little strange, although we think people will enjoy it just the same".
After all, this is an album fairly easy to like. The lead off single is "Just A Smile", one of two songs with Tekrø
handling the lead vocals. "Just A Smile" is an old Pilot number from the 70s, the only track they did not write
themselves. Tekrø and Rypdal has each written 4 songs of the eight remaining songs. Both players show their melodic
flairs, most of all of course, on behalf of their musicianship. "When RYPDAL is really at it, various sounds
completely unfamiliar to me stumble out of his guitar - sounds from hell", says Tekrø.
TERJE RYPDAL and Ronni Le Tekrø are indeed two different musicians. Rypdal as one of Norway´s real veterans with
about 30 years of playing down the line started out in bands of the 60s. Eventually he´s gained both national and
international recognition as jazz guitarist, classical composer and more. Tekrø on the other hand is better known
from his years with metal act TNT, a band that gained world-wide success, especially in the US and Japan during the
80s. These days, his job is with the band Vagabond.
Rypdal & Tekrø finished their recording for the 2nd album in April 1996, featuring the band Daredevils, a natural
choice for Tekrø since they make up Vagabond + additional drummer Audun Kleive.
