When James Met Lily (As Told By Sirius)
Prologue
“Harry,” Sirius Black started, “do you know how your parents met?”
“No,” Harry Potter said curiously.
“Well, they can’t tell you, but I’ll tell it my way. Your father and I were best friends. He wouldn’t mind. You can interrupt to ask questions if you want, Harry.”
“James and Lily:
The Beginning
James was my best friend. I had seen him through many stages of his life. We both got our letters on the same day. We met in Diagon Alley a week later.
We got on the Hogwarts Express and found a compartment with two boys by the names of Remus Lupin and Peter Pettigrew. We sat quietly until a girl named Lily Evans entered the compartment.
I was talking quietly to James, but once Lily walked in, James became silent. I could tell that he liked her. He sat through most of the journey just staring at her.
Once we got to Hogwarts and through the Sorting Ceremony, (we all got put in Gryffindor. Yes even Peter,” Sirius said to Harry’s questioning face.) James made an effort to sit near Lily.
This went on for the first month or two. I threatened to ask Lily out for James if he didn’t do it himself. He finally got the courage and she said yes.
Through the next six years, James and Lily were a couple. In the last month of seventh year, James proposed to Lily and she accepted. They got married a year later.”
Sirius paused and saw Harry processing this information. He waited until Harry looked like he understood. Then he continued.
“James and Lily:
The End
About three months after they were married, Dumbledore came to them saying that Voldemort was after them. Nobody really knew why. Dumbledore told them to do the Fidelius Charm. You had just been born, Harry. Since I was James’ best friend, they chose me to be your godfather and their Secret-Keeper. I decided to persuade them to switch to Peter. Little did we know that Peter was telling Voldemort some information.
I suppose Peter finally cracked. He told Voldemort where Lily and James were hiding. Voldemort killed James first and then killed your mother. Finally, he turned toward you, Harry. But he couldn’t kill you because your mother died to save you. She wasn’t supposed to die.”
Epilogue
“So, that’s the story. I’m sorry if that was hard for you,” Sirius said.
“It wasn’t. It actually helped me. I know about my parents,” Harry said. “Thank you.”
“You’re welcome.”
