CARE OF MAGICAL CREATURES- by Hagrid
“What
yer gonna do today is dangerous. Fireflies look harmless, but when yer tryin’
ter tame ‘em they can be a right handful. They don’t like to be fed; they're
real hunters in the blood. But their prey, the flying wormus, died out long
before you was born. So us wizards and witches, like yerselves, must feed ‘em,
without them suspecting. ‘Tis a difficult job mind, so don’t go larking
about, just listen. Now if it does go wrong, they’ll squirt their lightnin’
juice all over yer. It stings bad, so tell me if that happens, Madame
Pomfrey’ll be steamin’ else. I’ve got some dosin’ powder that Dumbledore
gave me, it’ll send ‘em straight to sleep. I can then deal with ‘em later.
Lets
start. Yer won’t be usin’ your wands today cause I got these sticks, just
tie a piece of this gutting wire to the end. That’s it. Now yer need a worm,
use the muggle method; stampin’ the ground brings ‘em up. Now attach yer
worm to the end of the wire, just pick ‘em up you fool, they won’t hurt yer.
Don’t pull the knot too tight, else you’ll cut right through him.
Take
one of the mirrors from the box over there; don’t be brawlin’ now! Yer only
need a little ‘un. Now make a circle, but facin’ outwards. Hold yer stick
over yer shoulder and let the worm suspend in mid air. The firefly’s vision is
one of its peculiar bits, it can’t see no details when it’s glowin’ and
can’t see anythin’ in mirrors, cause it’s too bright. To make ‘em glow
it's gotta be dark, so I’ll get rid of this ruddy torch in a minute.
The
sight of the worms will lure ‘em in, but yer can’t be lookin’ at it unless
you look indirectly through the mirror. Wave yer stick to make the worm look
like it's flyin’ and they should take the bait.
After yer all have fed
‘em, I’ll sprinkle the powder so I can release ‘em on me own so they
won’t scatter and might suspect like.
Everyone
face outwards, yer can watch me in yer mirrors. I’m gonna open the lid and you
can see how many you can lure in. All right? Let’s go…
Hagrid stared firmly at his class, his huge hands wrapped around a white
frosted box, glowing in the dim light of the afternoon.
