The Daemon Quest

Prologue

Daemon never had a very happy life. For as long as he could remember all he felt was pain. Daemon had become an orphan at a very young age. He was part of a large group of friends yet, he very often felt truly alone. Daemon was very plain, whereas some of his friends are so frickin powerful it isn't even funny.

First, there was Lord Bragwyn, master of all Northern Agrasia. Bragwyn has started off at the bottom tier of a mercenary army. He rose quickly though, because all of his commanding officers disregarded the care of the men. Bragwyn defeated all of the superiors through honorable combat and eventually became the commander of the army. He and his force travelled to Northern Agrasia, and when they arrived the peasants begged him to overthrow their Lord. Bearing such similarity to what he had gone through with his forces, Bragwyn felt obliged to. He overthrew the Lord, and the peasants immediately begged him to assume the position. His army stayed out of loyalty to there commander. Bragwyn is married to a forest dryad named Vandria.

Bragwyn's head mage is also a compatriot of Daemon's. The mage was named Draegen, and he is believed to be the single most powerful mage in all of existence. Draegen makes sure Bragwyn's life is easy as humanly possible. He cast spells of plenty on the feed to ensure rations are bountiful. He sometimes cast illusions to "augment" the size of the army when they go to war (which is rarely). Most importantly, he gives Bragwyn advice as to his possible choices in life. Draegen is married to Aslayn, a mercenary captain from Bragwyn's army.

Last but definitely not least is Aggrabos. He is the head of the Thieves Guild of Northern Agrasia. The guild is well tolerated in Agrasia because they often spy against the political enemies of Agrasia. Aggrabos is also a childhood friend of Bragwyn (having grown up in the same village). Aggrabos is also married. He is married to Craisia, the older sister of Vandria.

Daemon has a little advantage over normal people. He has been taught tactics by Bragwyn. Daemon has learned minor spellcasting from Draegen. He has even had training in thievery from Aggrabos. Yet he will never be near an equal to the skills of his friends. He does not mind this though because he likes being normal.

In such a crowd, Daemon would seem to have no purpose. He often portrays happiness for the benefit of his friends. Daemon would never let them see him truly and fully suffer because he would do them severe damage. They are to important to deal with such minute problems. After all, Daemon is so plain, but that will soon change...

Chapter 1

Daemon was an avid fisher. All the fish others couldn't catch, he caught. Fishing was the one thing Daemon was exceptional at. Of course, Daemon being the kindly soul he is, always let the fish go after being caught. The day Daemon's life changed he was, of course, fishing.

Daemon was in a peaceful reverie. It was a warm sunny day, the first they had had in a week. He was dozing on the bank when a gruff voice woke him.

     "There you are your Highness."

Daemon turned to see where this voice had come from. It was by far the single most disturbing voice he had ever heard. His breath caught when he glimpsed the originator of the voice. The man he beheld was more disturbing looking then his voice even sounded. He had short hair, the color of spider webs. His eyes were beady and the same color as freshly spilled blood. His mouth was framed with a mustache and goatee that eccentuated the perpetual sneer that he must have always worn. It was the most chilling face he had ever seen.

The man wore the robes of a mage and was thin, but you could tell he only looked thin. The robes were a color Daemon knew no mage war. They were a dark gray, like the color that is associated with decay. This man was truly...horrible.

"Sir," Daemon declared, "I believe you are mistaken. I am a friend of the Lord, but that is it. Can I help you with anything?"

"Are you accusing me of being stupid?" The man snarled (if it was indeed a man).

"I'll not be mocked by a... half-breed" The man spat acidily.

This last remark was punctuated by The man lifting Daemon by his shirt collar. The man then threw Daemon into the stream. He cackled while Daemon floundered.

You see Daemon was never a good swimmer. As a result of a near drowning in his early childhood, Daemon had a fear of water. He was therefore assured to drown. As his head went under the water, Daemon wished with all his life that he could have been in his warm, dry room.

Chapter 2

Suddenly, Daemon was in his room. He was immensly startled by this revelation. Daemon was searching for Draegen believing his friend had teleported him here, when the door opened. It was a humble looking old man.

"There you are your Majesty. I thought I might have been to late to save you. I thought Caerg had finished you."

"Why is everyone mistaking me for Bragwyn?" Daemon asked in exasperation. "I am Daemon! Plain, simple Daemon! First there was that evil looking man, now y..."

     "Help!" Daemon screamed in exasperation.

"Wait! I swear I would never hurt you, my Liege!" the Man groveled before Daemon.

"All right! Enough! Get up!" Daemon snapped

When the Man had stood up, Daemon continued. "Why do people keep calling me your liege, as if I were king or something?"

"Because you are a King. You are heir to the throne of Drerror. The Demon lands." The man replied.

"Me, a demon? Please! What do you think I am? Some kind of moron? I am not a Demon! Look at me." Daemon was starting to get annoyed with the Man at this point.

"But I do not lie, my Lord! You are a demon, just as me and Caerg are."

"Then why do you look so human, hmmmm? It's because you are you fool! Your no demon."

"Ahhh, I see. You believe that you are pure human, don't you? You also picture demons as the monsterous things from another world? Poor, delusional boy."

"Please, unless you can prove to me that I am a demon, I am not gonna listen to anymore of this. I'm calling the guards."

     "Alright, then behold this!"

Chapter 3

With that the man produced a magical orb of all-seeing. These orb was full of everything and nothing. It was all colors and no colors. It was each and its opposite.

"Would you believe this my liege? I am sure the mage has at least taught you about them. I cannot lie through this and I believe you know how to prove if its real or not. So go ahead and gaze into your past."

"Where did you get that? Even Draegen cannot get one of those! Its amazingly rare!"

"It's a family heirloom. Now gaze into and see your past my liege."

In the Orb, Daemon viewed a man who looked just like him. This man was being railed at by and old man on a throne. He was standing proudly though, and it was a given that he would not give into the old man.

"YOU ARE THE HEIR TO THE THRONE OF DRERROR! YET YOU CLAIM TO LOVE A..A...HUMAN! WHAT KIND OF DISGRACE HAVE I RAISED AS A SON! YOU ARE A DEMON!"

"I know father, but I love her. She is the most amazing being in all of existence."

"SHE IS A COMMON WENCH, UNBEFITTING THE HEIR OF DRERROR!"

The sheer rage of the young man caused the room to shake. A chandelier fell behind him and he was oblivious of this. He slowly approached the throne and the Old man cowered.

"YOU MISBEGGOTEN, OLD FOOL!! NEVER, EVER, SPEAK OF ELYSIA THAT WAY!! I'LL TEAR YOUR ENTIRE REALM APART WITH MY BEAR HANDS, RIGHT BEFORE YOUR EYES, AND THEN IT WILL BE YOUR TURN!!"

"You truly love her that much?", the old man asked

"That much more." the young man replied

"Then I have no choice but to give you my permission to marry her

     "Thank you so much father."

"Before you thank me know that you will never be allowed to return to Drerror. It will be forbidden to you for as long as you live."

"I understand father and I accept your decision."

Chapter 4

With that the scene disappeared. Daemon looked up at the old man with tear filled eyes.

"That young man? Was he my father." Daemon inquired

The old man nodded and said, "a finer demon never existed. That one would have had an amazing impact on Drerror. Its just a shame."

"So why are you coming to tell me of my lineage? I wasn't raised there, I never met my father, and I have nothing special to add to anywhere."

"Ahh, but your Majesty that's just it. You have so much to add to Drerror. You see you have the chance to be the most powerful demon in all of existence. All you need is training."

"But why would you want me. So I could rule? I am terrible at decision making. I can hardly decide what to eat. And when it comes to making demands I am so passive that everyone tries to use me. I cannot even ask a girl out without seeming like a total dweeb and you want me to become a King. Face it I am nothing like my father."

"If only you knew how wrong you are. Alas, we need a new king. Our current one is manipulative, cruel, and greedy. He killed your grandfather to take the throne. Caerg is his right hand man. He fears you because he believes that you may one day return to overthrow him. That is why he arranged the murder of your parents. He had no desire of you learning your heritage."

Chapter 5

That last statement was like a shot to Daemon's gut. His parents had been murdered. He had always figured it weird that his parents had died in the same fire (so he wasn't the smartest monkey in the barrel. Give him a break he just found out who his parents had been murdered by. You would be a little confused to trust me). They were killed because of him.

"My Lord, don't think such thoughts. It is unhealthy for you. You were not to blame for their death."

"You read my thoughts! How? I had an incantation placed on me a long time ago so as to prevent that. Oh, bye the way whats your name."

"Bah. Its a human incantation set up to prevent humans from doing it. I'm a demon and therefore face no such limitations. And its Pharus."

"Oh. Well, I want to make this demon king pay for what he did. I'll destroy him."

"My Liege, no offense but a fly could take you out in your prestent condition. To have any chance against the Demon king you must bring your spell book with you and while working on that, you must also learn to use your demon half."

"All right. Let's go then. I'll just tell the guys whats up and we should be ready to leave in about an hour."

"No, your highness. You cannot tell your friends. They would be destroyed in a matter of instants in Drerror. Rather, you must leave now with me."

"But they'll be worried about me. At least let me leave a note."

With that he set down to writing a note to his friends. It said:

Dear guys,
Went to Drerror (the Demon realm), to kill its king and take my rightful place. Take care and don't have to much fun without me.
                          Talk to you later,
                               Daemon
P.S: Draegen I took my spell book to help me and I am gonna try to gain some more spells. Bye

"This is gonna be a long trip." Pharus said

And with that they were gone and a stream of light.

Chapter 6

Daemon and Pharus suddenly appeared in a most dreadful place. There were trees, and grass and water but it was all wrong. The trees looked as if they had been emptied of sap and filled with blood. When the wind went through the branches, it filled the surrounding area with the moans of the tormented. The grass was littered with the carcasses of hundreds of little animals. There cause of death was most likely the grass. It was beyond dead.

The water was the worst, though. An oil spill would of made the water better looking. It resembled decay. There is no better way to put it. It looked as if it was corrosive and most likely was. There were thousands of fish floating dead on top of it.

"This is Drerror?" Daemon inquired. "It's terrible why would anyone want to live here at all. Any place would be better."

"To you, yes. To the people of Drerror, no. This is there home after all my liege. They know no other life then the one the live here. And it was not always like this. At one time Drerror was a place of rare beauty. Then Hakirjdo urseped the crown. Drerror is a place of wonderment because it emulates the king. It responds to his traits." Pharus explained.

"Oh, so when I kill Hakirjdo, everything will be better. Then lets go. Train me so I can kill him."

"It's not quite so easy my lord. First you will need training from each of the Demon Guilds: Thieves, Fighters, and Wizards. Then and only then will you have a fighting chance."

Meanwhile while back in Northern Agrasia, Draegen finds Daemons letter.

"What is this? Daemon thinks he can skip out on his studies with some lame lie. Though he doesn't normally lie. Maybe I should look into this." Draegen mused.

At the same time, Aggrabos decides to check in on his friend. "Daemon should sure be surprised to see me. Bragwyn, too. I hope Daemon has been working on those lock picking techniques.

Bragwyn was also thinking of his friend. "Damnit, I know Daemon's into trouble again. If he wasn't so...well, naive, then we wouldn't have these problems. Rasa fragging.

Chapter 7

But anyway back to Daemon. Daemon has just about gotten ready to be teleported again when he saw Pharus walking away. He was greatly puzzled by this.

"Hey, Pharus aren't we gonna teleport? I mean, pooof. C'mon where you going, dude? This isn't funny. Get back here."

Daemon scurried to catch up. By the time he caught up, he was out of breath.

"Pharus, why are we walking? I mean if you teleported us we could be there like that. Pop."

"Daemon, we need to practice secrecy. My teleportation spell alerts every magic user in three miles of me. We cannot afford that and as such we will walk. This will also help prefer for the first guild: The Fighters guild. You're gonna need to be in the best shape of your life."

"Who runs the Fighters guild? Is he good? Did you ever go there? What's it like? Do you have any kids?"

"DAEMON, DON'T YOU EVER SHUT UP! JEEZ. Taesrg runs the academy. He was the disciple of the Master who trained Hakirjdo. He is second only to his master and Hakirjdo. Yes, I went there. All demons needed to attend all the guilds. It is one of the most challeging experiences you will ever face. As for kids...I had some but Hakirjdo took care of them with the rest of my family. Now only I and one other survive."

"I'm so sorry. I know how you feel my friends are my family now. But don't worry I'll take care of Hakirjdo."

"I truly believe you will boy, I truly believe you will. But, anyway lets head out to the fighters guild. Its a half a days walk from here."

Chapter 8

     "Here we are Daemon."

"Wow! It's huge. And look at all the people. There are so ma..."

"Now listen up, boy. I want you to pay close attention to your studies. If you are to defeat Hakirjdo, then you must surpass your master. That is your only chance. Also, I am going to polymorph you so that you look different otherwise you, will be in constant danger. What are you looking at boy?"

Daemon had missed the entire rant of Pharus because he had been watching a girl. She seemed amazing to him because he had never actually talked to a girl in a romantic way before and here she was walking his way! What luck!

"Out of the way rookie." Whaaap. She sent him to the ground with a simple back hand.

"Oh, Daemon. I do so hope you learn. That is Takirta, the daughter of Taesrg. She considers herself better then almost anyone and she is. To face her father you must defeat her. And you must face her father to be worthy in her eyes. Boy are you even listening. Oh damn."

"Someday," Daemon thought,"Someday I will earn if not her love then at the least her respect. I will show everyone that I am not someone to be ignored."

When Pharus left that day he was amazed to see the lazy boy actually working. Of course, he was still watching Takirta but whatever would help him grow worked.

Chapter 9

When Pharus returned six months later to check on Daemon he was surprised to see Daemon surrounded by the unconscious bodies of his peers, holding a staff.

"Daemon, what happened? Was there a fight? Did you get hurt. Where are Taesrg and Takirta?"

"Don't worry old man they are in there. Taesrg wanted to see how good I had gotten so he ordered me to defend myself against everybody. Boy, was he surprised that first time it was just me and him. Today, they tried to ambush me but I won. Yeah they know there place now."

Daemon then proceeded to lift two people on each shoulder and carry them to the infirmary. Apparently he had grown out of his lazy ways.

Later as Daemon sat at a table with his peers, Taesrg approached Pharus.

"I have never seen a pupil so talented. He took out Takirta in a month, Me in two, and everyone at once in three. Unfortunatly he swoons everytime he sees Takirta. He refuses to accept that she is not available and he pines away at false hope. But, one question, Old one. Who is he?" Taesrf pondered

"He is the son of Jarkyxl."

"You mean he...is...the hier apparent. No wonder he is so talented. What is next for him?"

"He shall attend the Wizards guild with Phrasg."

"He shall surpass him Old one. One day he may even surpass you."

"We can only hope." Pharus said with a wistful sigh.

Chapter 10

Daemon left the guild that day feeling empty. He had confronted Takirta and been told in certain terms, "you and I have no future now". He had been heart broken but he had grown a lot in his time at the school. He knew that more important things would take up his time but when he was done he would come to grips with it.

"So old man, what have you been up to? Working out maybe. Hahaha."

"I have been practicing my magic if you must know. I will need to be at my full strength soon if I am to help. Ahhhh, there is the mage school. Here you will get your spirit intuned with your body. And remember to...damnit, why do you always find the girls so quickly?"

Daemon had seen the girl as soon as he entered the compound. She was the single most beautiful girl he had ever seen. She was a rose unparalled in a field of thorns. She had the most beautiful face, hair, and body. The thing that stole Daemon's breath away was the smile though. She had a smile that sent Daemon's legs to melting. She had a smile that made everyone else in the room insignificant.

She was walking over to Daemon when she noticed he had tensed his stomach muscles. What was he doing? She had heard that he had training in human magic but was this some weird casting technique? She figured to one up him and hit him in the face with a ball of light.

"Damn, first I get hit by Takirta in the stomach and now she blinds me. Great, just fricking great."

"I'm sorry I thought that maybe that was how humans cast spells. Here let me help you up. I'm Crebatyu, daughter of Phrasg. I'm sorry but you just seemed to be tensing."

"I thought you were like Takirta. I mean she rambled on about you enough and even I must admit that her statements were well...inadequate. On to training though. Shall we?"

"This should be interesting" thought Pharus

Chapter 11

Crebatyu was amazed. Within a year Daemon had come along and mastered all the schools of demon magic. Then he had increased all of his human magic capabilities to boot. He was more powerful then her father.

"There is something strange about you, Daemon. I will find out what it is." she muttered.

Daemon was casting an intricate spell which would give him an advanced resistance to magic. This would last through all of his life, so long as he drew breath. This was to be his final test. Pharus was to come and pick him up on this day so he could complete his training.

"Done, and done. Master, my spell is complete." Daemon announced with a smirk.

The smirk disappeared when he heard his master preparing to cast his most powerful offensive spell. Before Daemon could react he was blasted by a ball of fire. Yet the spell shattered harmlessly around him.

"Congratulations Daemon. You have achieved all you will be able to under my tutalage. You need only finish the final part of your training." Phrasg declared.

Pharus arrived within ten minutes of that final spell. He was startled to see Daemon was dressed in the robes of a human mage, yet with his sword belted at his waist.

"So, you actually did it. You amaze me, my liege. I would never have thought that you could have accomplished that." Pharus muttered. "We just might have a chance.

Chapter 12

Daemon arrived at the thieves guild about three days later. He was greeted by a crippled man.

"Hello, I am Aopziexqu, Master of the Thieves guild. You must be Daemon. Would you like your sword and money purse back?"

Daemon glanced down and noticed that they were indeed missing. "How did you do that?"

"You will learn how to as time goes bye. Now, go drop your things in your room your training starts at dusk."

"Dusk? Why not now while we still have daylight?" Daemon wondered aloud.

"Because from dusk till dawn, thieves rule. All heroes are incapable of getting as great an accomplishment as a thief in the night. Now stop questioning and get going. Murcedia will show you to your room."

     "Who?"

     "Me."

From out of the shadows stepped a young woman. She was cloaked entirely in black. She was thin yet, you could tell that she bore a surprising state of strength. She seemed to be a really quiet girl, because even though she was a master thief, she squirmed under everyones gaze, with a fierce blush in her cheeks.

Of course, Daemon once again became a fool. He was stunned by this beauty, yet he was not so removed as he was before. He now had a single mindedness, that consisted of destroying Hakirjdo.

As Daemon and Murcedia left, Pharus nodded his head. His lord was indeed becoming much more intelligent as well as focused.

Chapter 13

Daemon progressed quite quickly in this field. Of all of the endeavors this was the one he was most adept at. He quickly picked up on the techniques that are needed to become successful at roguery. He was quite capable at picking locks. He excelled at picking pockets. Daemon even was amazing at disappearing from site entirely, far exceeding stealth. He was at one with the night it seemed, for as he wished to hide the night seemed to gather him into her arms, much as a mother to its babe.

Daemon was accepted into the arms of the guild much quicker then any of the others. They even vied for his friendship realizing how much of an asset he could be. Yet he remained seperated because he knew his quest would not permit for innocent folk. They would only come to harm.

Tonight was his final test though. He was to break into the master's room and steal a crystal of shadows. The crystal of shadows is an amazing device in that, when worn by a rogue, it will allow the one wearing it to become insubstantial. They then can go through places they normally couldn't.

That's my story so far. What you think? E-mail me with your critiques and comments, Talk to me in school, whatever.
